A 16-YEAR-OLD Grade 9 pupil of Chinsali, Muchinga Province, has allegedly committed su***de after his father reportedly advised him to study hard for his Grade Nine examination.

Muchinga Province police commanding officer Dennis Moola said Titus Mulenga, of Seed Farm village, committed su***de between Saturday night and Sunday morning.

On Saturday around 20:00 hours, his father, Bernard Mulenga, advised him to concentrate on his studies.

This was based on the fact that he was about to start writing his Grade 9 examinations.

“The father did not see his son the following day and he even went to church until he received information that he had committed su***de,” he said.

Mr Moola said the matter was reported to the police and officers found the victim’s body with a laptop bag containing some Grade 9 past papers beside.

The body was later taken to Chinsali District Hospital mortuary awaiting burial. Last week, an 18-year-old Grade 12 pupil of Ndola committed su***de after her mother scolded her for returning late from overnight tuitions.

Chainama Hills Mental Hospital public relations manager George Tafuna has attributed the increase in su***de cases among teenagers to substance abuse and low self-esteem that they feel when scolded by their parents.

Dr Tafuna said children tend to have low self esteem when they are confronted about what they are doing.

HWPL Legacy of Peace Project in Kanyama Launches HWPL Peace Club

The Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light(HWPL) Peace Club will conduct the “Legacy of Peace Project 1 – Kanyama" from October 16 to 17, 2024, in the Kanyama area of Lusaka.

HWPL is an international non-profit organization dedicated to promoting peace and human rights worldwide. Founded in 2013, HWPL seeks to bring together individuals and organizations from diverse backgrounds to foster a culture of peace through education and advocacy. This project will take place at schools in Lusaka, starting from those which have signed MOUs, including but not limited to Twashuka Primary School, Kanyama Central Secondary School, Chinika Secondary School, Chibolya Secondary School, and Shifwankula Secondary School.

HWPL's peace education programs are designed to empower students with essential skills for conflict resolution, respect for human rights, and acceptance of diversity. These programs include workshops and seminars focusing on key themes such as empathy, communication, and community engagement, which are vital for nurturing peaceful relationships. The main goal of the HWPL Peace Club which started from HWPL Peace Education, is to provide students with education that helps them learn the values of peace while realizing their own values and dreams. Through various activities with the HWPL certified peace educators, students will be supported to maintain confidence even during exam periods. This program emphasizes helping students recognize their dreams and realize them through education, with the slogan of "Fly High Dream Big".

Kanyama, a densely populated area in Lusaka facing significant social challenges, is in urgent need of positive change through peace education. The HWPL Peace Club seeks to foster a peaceful learning environment and nurture a culture of peace within the community, empowering students to grow into advocates for peace.
The project will feature educational sessions and diverse peace activities led by HWPL certified peace educators and students. Activities like dream drawing games and bucket list creation will encourage students and enhance their motivation for learning. These programs will provide opportunities to boost students' self-esteem and aspirations.
School Head Teachers expect the peace club to significantly promote cooperation and respect among students. They anticipate that peace education will reduce stress during exams and enhance students' focus on learning. Teachers also expect students to demonstrate more peaceful and collaborative attitudes, which will positively impact their long-term academic performance.

Mr. Ian Miyoba, the Lusaka District Education Board Secretary (DEBS), supported the expansion of HWPL Peace Club to more schools for the students nationwide to be greatly benefited in terms of learning and personal development.

Through this project, the HWPL Peace Club aims to enhance students' self-esteem and academic achievement while fostering a peaceful learning environment in Lusaka. By cultivating leadership skills centered on peace, the club empowers students to become future leaders who can resolve conflicts and promote sustainable peace, ultimately contributing to Zambia's national stability and development.

Religious Freedom Violation and Intolerance Spark International Controversy

South Korean local government cancels international event with 30,000 participants from 78 countries, causing international damage

On October 29th, an administrative decision by a South Korean government agency sparked international controversy, raising concerns about religious freedom and causing substantial financial loss.

The “Religious Leaders Forum and Graduation Ceremony,” a joint initiative by two prominent religious organizations, was set to take place in Paju, South Korea. The event was expected to draw over 30,000 participants from 57 countries, including 1,000 religious leaders representing Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, and Hinduism.

However, the Gyeonggi Tourism Organization, a public entity under Gyeonggi Province, abruptly canceled the venue rental without prior notice. This last-minute decision has resulted in significant financial damage to the international event. Organizers of this event stated that the cancellation constitutes an unconstitutional act of discrimination against a specific religion, violating religious freedom, human rights, and due process of law.

The hosting organizations, the Association for Buddhist National Unification of Korea and Shincheonji Church of Jesus, said that they had received official confirmation on October 23rd and 28th that there was no plan of cancellation. They also said that the unilateral cancellation was an unreasonable administrative action targeting a specific religious group. They further emphasize that other events scheduled for the same day were not affected, suggesting that the cancellation was “administrative decision caused by opposition from a specific religious group,” which “violates the principle of separation of church and state guaranteed by the Constitution.”

The Gyeonggi Tourism Organization cited security concerns related to recent North Korean actions and the planned activities of a North Korean defector group as reasons for the cancellation. However, it was pointed out that other events, such as civilian bike rides and foreign tourist visits to the DMZ, were permitted within the same designated area.

The incident has reignited international debate about religious freedom and tolerance in South Korea. The U.S. State Department’s International Religious Freedom Report has previously highlighted concerns such as the prosecution of Shincheonji Church of Jesus and the government's refusal to approve mosque construction.

The Association for Buddhist National Unification of Korea and Shincheonji Church of Jesus call upon the South Korean government to respect religious freedom, uphold human rights, and rectify this unjust decision. They urge international organizations to monitor this situation and take appropriate action to protect religious freedom.
