N/WEST TARGETS 3,500 WETLANDS BENEFICIARIES

North Western Province under the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services (MCDSS) under the department of Community Development (CD) has targeted 3,500 beneficiaries under the wetlands cropping programme in five (5) districts namely Kalumbila,Kasempa, Mushindamo, Zambezi and Mwinilunga. This was reviewed when North Western Province Senior Community Development Officer (SCDO) under the Food Security Pack Programme (FSP) Robert Mwenda visited Kalumbila district during the traditional wetland enumeration of over 1000 potential beneficiaries under the wetlands programme. Mr Mwenda said the programme is as a result of the looming hunger situation due to the dry spell experienced in the country and the province and also the emergency declaration by the government. Mr Mwenda further said that vulnerable but viable people in the community should take advantage of the various social protection services under the department of Community Development such as Micro Credit Village Banking. He further said each of the five districts will receive 700 packs of farming inputs for 700 beneficiaries which translates to 3,500 beneficiaries for the whole province. He said each beneficiary will receive 1 urea fertilizer, 1 D compound fertilizer and 1 by 5 Kg bag of White maize.

Meanwhile, Kalumbila District Community development Officer (DCDO) Louis Mulale said the emergency wetlands programme will target all the 12 wards in the district. Mr Mulale said the programme will ensure that food security in the district is enhanced despite the dry spell experienced in the country. He said that Food Security is a goal and pre-Condition to Community development.

And one of the potential beneficiaries at Musanda area Gladys Meleki, has thanked the government through MCDSS for the programme as they lost most of their crops due to the dry spell and that they feared the looming hunger situation.

Two men of Mwinilunga and Ikeleng'i districts in North Western Province have been sentenced to jail for 15 years each with hard labour for defilement and indecent assault respectively by Solwezi High Court Judge in charge, Obister Musukwa. A 36 year old physiotherapist at Mwinilunga District hospital Twambo Hitima was murdered yesterday by her 44 year old husband Collard Mubita, a Human Resource Officer at Mwinilunga District Health Office (DHO). Mr Mubita has since being detained by Zambia police in Mwinilunga.

The murder was confirmed by North-Western Province police commanding officer Dennis Moola and the arrest of her husband.

According to reports, the couple had a misunderstanding on Saturday evening which led to Mubita storming out of the house in anger, only to return yesterday and became angrier because he did not find his wife.

International Women's Day (IWD) in Zambia is a celebration of the achievements and resilience of women while acknowledging the barriers they face. This year's theme " invest in women and girls; Accelerate progress", resonates deeply in zambia's context, calling for deliberate actions to empower women and girls enhance their contributions, and amplify their impact in social, economic and political spheres.

This year's IWD we celebrate Kasempa district Member of Parliament (MP) and current Minister of Labour and Social Security (MLSS) Brendah Tambatamba who has contributed immensely in the development of her District. Before joining politics, she contributed positively in the sustainability of Lumwana Barrick mine in kalumbila District where she was the sustainability manager and came up with different programmes for women such as " Nsabo yetu" which has seen some impact as vulnerable women are now able to access financial assistance in form of small loans through Community Savings Groups (CSG). Her dedication to work, resilience and the desire to see women being empowered in order for them to contribute to the social, political and economic development of their communities can not be over emphasised as can be seen in the different programmes in her Constituency targeting vulnerable but viable women. Her stay at the MLSS can not go unnoticed in terms of promoting women's right's as she increased the minimum wage for domestic worker's, who the majority are women.
