WOMEN’S FOOTBALL BACK IN AFRICA AS COSAFA TAKES CENTRE-STAGE

The 2020 COSAFA Women’s Championship is to take centre-stage in South Africa’s Nelson Mandela Bay from November 3-14 in what are expected to be the first women’s internationals staged on the African continent since the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc with the football calendar.

COSAFA also intends to stage its Women’s Under-17 Championship concurrently with the senior competition from November 5-13, providing some much-needed international competition in this crucial age-group.

It is a welcome return to national team competition for the sides, who have endured a frustrating 2020, but with light at the end of the tunnel, the future looks a lot brighter.

The COSAFA Women’s Championship will feature eight teams, split into two groups of four, who will battle it out for a place in the semifinals.

Hosts and defending champions South Africa will be joined by Angola, Botswana, Comoros Islands, Malawi, East African guest nation Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe in what is a strong field.
The draws for both championships are scheduled for Tuesday, October 20, and will be streamed live on COSAFA.TV.

COPPER QUEENS TOKYO FUNDRAISER GETS MINISTERIAL ENDORSEMENT

Dear football family, we are back this week with a roller-coaster football fest ahead of us. Just two days from now our beloved Chipolopolo will host Malawi in an international friendly match at National Heroes Stadium. This friendly that the coach has indicated will be an opportunity to have a check of local players will set the pace for two more international games during the FIFA window that runs from October 5-14. We play Kenya away in Nairobi on October 9 and South Africa on October 11 in Rustenburg.

We are still finalizing the details with our counterparts on the other end. It has always been our sworn position to give the Chipolopolo international action during FIFA windows. These matches are set in line with the recommendations of the technical bench that tailor friendly matches according to the opposition the team faces in competitive matches.

However, the shine in my column this week belongs to the Copper Queens whose Olympic qualification was in the spotlight as we presented a committee of eminent women to the Minister of Sport Emmanuel Mulenga. The committee that comprise the crème dele crème of women in the corporate world is led by Zanaco Board chairperson Charity Lumpa. Others Dr Tukiya Kankasa, Priscilla Mutale Nkanza and Ambassador Ndiyoyi Mutiti.

Ms Lumpa brings to the fore a lot of experience from the corporate world that has seen her previously serve as Managing Director of the Zambia National Tourism Board, Ecobank Zambia Limited and Airtel Networks Zambia. We hope to tap in this vast resource as we seek to raise money for our Copper Queens that will fly the continental flag at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games (to be staged in 2021). Dr Kankasa who is an accomplished lawyer also served as Bank of Zambia deputy governor in charge of administration and retains huge reputation in the corporate world while Ms Nkanza also stands out for her accomplishments as a leading e

FAZ Presents Eminent Women Committee to Sports Minister...Copper Queens Fundraising Drive Gains Momentum

Sports Minister Emmanuel Mulenga conferred with the FAZ constituted committee of eminent women set to spearhead fundraising activities for the senior Zambia Women National Team ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

FAZ president Andrew Kamanga who was accompanied by deputy general secretary Joseph Chimpampwe officially presented the committee members to the minister at Government Complex.
The committee comprises seasoned corporate gurus headed by Zanaco board chairperson Charity Lumpa.

Other members are former Bank of Zambia (BoZ) deputy governor in charge of administration Dr Tukiya Mabula-Kankasa, Priscilla Nkanza, Brenda K***a and Ambassador Ndiyoyi Mutiti.

The committee will undertake various fundraising activities and are expected to liaise with First Lady Esther Lungu who is the matron of the Copper Queens.

Mulenga pledged government’s full support to the initiative that has brought on board top business minds.

The Copper Queens made history by qualifying to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (to be staged in 2021 due to the covid-19) by beating Cameroon 2-1 on March 10 at Nkoloma Stadium.
It will be the first time since 1988 that a Zambian football team will be making an appearance at the Olympic Games.

The Olympic Games will be staged from July 23 to August 8, 2021.
Women football has hit new heights under the Kamanga administration that has raised the bar in terms of support and talent search.

FAZ HIGH LEVEL WOMEN FOOTBALL FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE GETS DOWN TO BUSINESS

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has constituted a committee of eminent personalities to spearhead fundraising initiatives for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic bound Women National team.
Following a decision by the FAZ Executive Committee, a group of leading personalities headed by Zanaco Board Chairperson Charity Lumpa, former Bank of Zambia deputy director in charge of administration Dr Tukiya Kankasa and Mrs Priscilla Mutale Nkanza.
The committee will liaise with the Matron who is First Lady Esther Lungu.
Following the qualification of the Zambia Senior Women National Team to the Tokyo Olympics 2020 as the only direct entrant from Africa (Cameroon shall compete in a playoff with Chile to decide who qualifies via playoffs) the FAZ executive committee saw it prudent to put up a team of eminent women in society with the right business acumen to fundraise towards the smooth preparation and participation of the team at the Olympics in 2021.
The committee held a meeting this morning with the FAZ executive committee member in charge of women football Brenda K***a and deputy general secretary Joseph Chimpampwe.
FAZ president Andrew Kamanga and his executive have placed a high premium on the development of women football that has culminated in various national teams competing at international games.
The highlight of the commitment to the women game is the historic qualification to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

U17 WOMEN COMMENCE COSAFA PREPS…Tournament Take Off Subject to Covid-19 Situation

The Zambia Under-17 Women National team has commenced preparations for the 2019 Cosafa tournament pencilled for South Africa next month.

In an interview, Coach Kangwa Kaluba says his technical bench has summoned 45 players to camp.
Kaluba who was taking the girls through the paces at Barca Academy said he had roped in half the players from the 2019 inaugural Cosafa tournament while the other half comprised first timers.

The coach said that most of the players were not in good shape arising from the Covid-19 induced break from all football activities.
“The majority of the players are not in good shape. We all know the reason, the league has not been active due to the Covid challenge. We could see that the majority of our girls are struggling,” he said.
“From the list we have, we have half the team from last year and the other team is new. The under-17 has a four year project and one of the goals is to produce quality players that will graduate to the senior team.”

Kaluba said the team would be aiming to do better than last year’s third place finish in Mauritius.
“This is the second time that we will be participating in the Cosafa under-17 tournament. We want to do better this year,” he said.
Cosafa has set up a tentative calendar subject to the covid-19 situation in the region that will see the under-17 women tournament played from October 15-25 while the senior women championship is lined up for October 19-31 in Port Elizabeth.

COPPER QUEENS TO PLAY NIGERIA, CAMEROON, SOUTH AFRICA IN FRIENDLIES WHILE CAMPING IN SPAIN

AS PART of our preparations for the Tokyo Olympic Games next year, the Zambia national women’s team is expected to play Nigeria, Cameroon and South Africa in friendly matches.
Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) vice-president Rix Mweemba confirmed the three internationals in an interview yesterday.

Mweemba said FAZ is confident that the three teams, which are the powerhouses in women’s football on the continent, will help Zambia shape up for the tournament.

“The women’s team is scheduled to play Nigeria, Cameroon and South Africa and we believe that these teams will give them a good run as they prepare to meet the world’s best,” he said.

Mweemba also said that the association is looking at the possibilities of the team camping in Spain.

“Preparations to camp in Spain are already in the pipeline and it is our prayer that the COVID-19 cases will soon reduce as the country is one of the worst hit,” he said.

Women's football is slowly moving towards greater heights both locally and internationally from the introduction of regional Tournaments on the Continent and beyond, however alot needs to be done regarding the womens game, to help us discuss this subject will be Brenda K***a from the Football Association of Zambia live on REAL SPORTS tomorrow at 08hrs.

MAKE A DATE 💫.

18/08/2020

The Executive Committee of the Council of Southern African Football Associations (COSAFA) has approved several new initiatives, including a revised 2020 calendar for tournaments, subject to the prevailing COVID-19 conditions across the region.

While the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic will have on travel and quarantine restrictions remains uncertain in the coming months, the Executive has crafted a potential blueprint for hosting competitions if conditions allow across the COSAFA region.

The Under-17 and Under-20 COSAFA Men’s Championships serve as qualifiers for the continental finals to be staged by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and as such a priority has been placed on finding a window for these tournaments.

The Mauritius Football Association has confirmed they have government approval to host these tournaments in November and December 2020, subject to COVID-19 levels remaining as they are, and strict health protocols being implemented.

The continental finals for the Under-17 age-group are scheduled for Morocco next July, while the Under-20 finals are set for Mauritania at a date that has yet to be determined.

The organisation is also exploring the potential of hosting its flagship men’s COSAFA Cup during the October FIFA International window, while the senior COSAFA Women’s Championship has also been pencilled in for October 19-31 in Nelson Mandela Bay.

Both are highly dependent on prevailing COVID-19 and travel conditions in South Africa at the time.

There is also a plan to overlap the COSAFA Women’s Under-17 Championship (October 15-25) with the senior tournament in South Africa.

The Under-20 Women’s Championship, which was scheduled for the Region 5 Games in Maseru in December, has been cancelled for this year after the Games were postponed to December 2021.

While the 2020 calendar remains uncertain given the unpredictability of the COVID-19 pandemic, there are exciting plans to add as many as three more competitions in 2021, in what will be an incredibly busy time.

COSAFA has applied to host a Boys Under-15 Championship in conjunction with the UEFA Assist programme, which will be timely with CAF focusing more on this age-group for their own development initiatives.

COSAFA has also created a task team to devise plans for the Regional Women’s Champions League which the organisation hopes to stage for the first-time next year, subject to funding being sourced to support this competition.

There is also the potential to stage a Beach Soccer and Futsal Championships for the region that is being explored, which would bring the total to ten COSAFA tournaments in 2021.

Away from the pitch, the COSAFA Executive committee also approved the implementation of Online Training Workshops for all countries in the areas of Coaching, Referees, Administration and Media, subject to the necessary funding being available.

Zambia head of women's football K***a is in shock after CAF cancelled the 2020 Africa Women Cup of Nations. K***a has said that the cancellation of the Africa Women Championship (AWCON) is regrettable.

K***A WELCOMES CAF WOMEN’S CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Football Association of Zambia executive committee member in charge of women football Brenda K***a says the introduction of the CAF Champions League for women will help make national leagues competitive.

K***a said that women football will be given more opportunities on the continent with a continental club tournament.
“I am definitely for the idea because I believe it will help FAs in Africa to set up competitive national leagues,” she said.
“Most importantly clubs will benefit on the finances. Players will now have a better platform to showcase their talent. It will create opportunities to be seen by other clubs locally and internationally.”

K***a said that while the cancellation of the Africa Women Championship (AWCON) was regrettable the Champions League could compensate for the loss.
“Obviously it's coming at the backdrop of Zambia needing the AWCON tournament as preparation for the Olympics but will overcome the challenges and use other avenues to prepare the teams,” she said.

K***a paid tribute to the owners of women clubs that have been critical in the growth of the ladies’ game.
She said the CAF Women Champions League would help reward some of their efforts.

K***a expressed delight at the growing number of women footballers trekking into foreign leagues.
So far Zambia has four players in Europe and one in China with more expected to make breakthroughs.
Rachael Nachula and Hellen Chanda were the latest to trek to Europe having signed for Zaragoza FF in Spain while Misozi Zulu and Rachael K***ananji are in Kazakhstan with BIIK Kazyghurt who campaign in the UEFA Champions League.
Skipper Barbara Banda made a big money move from EDF Logrono in Spain for Shanghai in China.

Women football has been undergoing rapid transformation with all the junior teams regularly given time to prepare for international tournaments while the Copper Queens hit a record high with Olympic qualification.
FAZ president Andrew Kamanga recently announced that a committee of eminent persons will be set up to help fundraise for the women game especially with the Copper Queens bound for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

BRENDA K***A SPECIFIC GOALS TO DEVELOP WOMENS FOOTBALL IN ZAMBIA

With Women Premier league scheduled to start in 2021 talks are underway with would be sponsors. Its evident that the job for marketing women football has been made easy with the qualifications of the Copper Queens to the Olympic Tokyo 2020 , a strong brand has been created. Not to long ago the corporate world would never come knocking to sponsor women football, but now it's different. This is what Brenda K***a hoped to achieve in her four year plan. Brenda K***a believes this is the turning point for women football.
End of 2020 all provinces will have leagues with the help of the provincial women representatives . To help cut down on costs of travel for women teams and ensure competitiveness in the leagues soon the teams in the provinces will be zoned either per district or combining districts that have very close proximity to each other. Because of distances and due to lack of sponsorship most teams fail to travel to fulfill the fixtures. Am very alive to these challenges soon this will be a thing of the past. With increased sponsorship for the lower divisions the women teams will be entitled too.
With Women premier league we expect more money to come in and this will also trickle down to the clubs. Brenda K***a would like to see women teams go away with at least $5000 as a part of the sponsorship for a start. Gradually this amount can be increase.

FAZ HEALTH CORNER: NOCZ MASKS COPPER QUEENS

The National Olympic Committee of Zambia has donated 100 masks to the Zambia Women National Team as part of their contribution to the fight against the Covid-19.

Delivering the masks to FAZ General Secretary Adrian Kashala, NOCZ representative Suwilanji Mpondela said the donation was a token for the Copper Queens to ensure that they keep safe ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games that have been moved to 2021.

Mpondela said the Copper Queens were assets to the nation that must be preserved to continue bringing glory to Zambia.

In receiving the donation, Kashala thanked NOCZ for its gesture and assured that the masks will be delivered to the team.

Kashala reiterated his message to the football fraternity to continue observing preventive measures prescribed by the Ministry of Health in the fight against the Covid-19.

The Copper Queens made history by qualifying to the Olympics for the first time in the country's history.

Zambia grabbed the only automatic slit for Africa while Cameroon will compete in a play-off with Chile for the only other window for the continent.
