India my second home
My fate with India began 1999 when I enrolled for junior school and got in love with the amazing culture, cuisine and lifestyle. Little did I know the foundation to the future was being prepared. It only makes sense now reflecting and connecting the dots from collaborating on various international projects with India, coordinating Indian Festivals with Africa Exchange and Teamwork Arts to hosting the first historic visit of Vice President of India to Zimbabwe in 21 years since 1996 https://www.herald.co.zw/indian-vice-president-naidu-jets-in/
Did you know India is the second-most populous country in the world (after China), with an estimated population of 1.36 billion people (in 2019). The country is subdivided into 29 states and seven Union Territories. India is the 7th largest country in the world, about one-third the size of the USA.
India and Zimbabwe have a long history of close and cordial relations. During the era of the Munhumutapa Kingdom, Indian merchants established strong links with Zimbabwe, trading in textiles, minerals and metals. Sons of the royal house of Munhumutapa journeyed to India to broaden their education. Since then strong ties have been maintained between the two countries. India is actively involved in Human Resources and Capacity building programmes e.g. The ITEC and ICCR scholarships have been a regular feature of India’s assistance to Zimbabwe and much sought after by Zimbabweans.
Economic relations between the two nations are of uttermost importance. Bilateral trade between India and Zimbabwe totalled USD $222.31 million in 2014-15. Indian Exports to Zimbabwe stood at $222.19 million, while imports stood at $120 000. Zimbabwe has, as of late, started following ‘Look East Policy’ and India is now looked upon as an important trading and business partner. Did you know there is Zimbabwe India Chamber of Commerce? https://www.herald.co.zw/zim-india-relations-ideal-for-business/
When you schedule a trip to India make sure you treat yourself with some of my favourite Indian cuisine Dal Makhani, Paneer, Lamb masala, Fish masala and Chicken biryani served with flavoured pickles amongst others.
Many thanks to Ambassador R. Masakui for the investment you made in Zimbabwe during your term of office. The various collaborative and exchange programs you facilitated between India and Zimbabwe are highly applauded. We look forward to continue engagement with the beautiful nation of India.
Look out for the next edition…
