#6 Prepare YOUR Speech

Preparing to speak is a note worthy opportunity. Whenever you speak it means you have a message others need to hear and delivering that message eloquently is key.

A prepared speech should begin with a QUOTE, HUMOR, CAPTIVATING SENTENCE or a QUESTION.

The first paragraph should give an idea of the topic of your message and the presentation should be structured.

Here are a few things you should do to help you prepare:

1. Prepare in advance
2. Practice practice, practice
3. Be on time that way you can relax
4. Be comfortable in your space
5. Choose a "go to" person within the audience for eye contact. I usually choose someone wearing a bright color
6. Get your audience's attention
7. Make your body speak using your space. Knowing when to move and when to be still is important.

#4 The Power of the PAUSE

Many times out of nervousness someone is asked a question and they immediately response by talking and talking without a pause.

While speaking a pause is an opportunity to rest, gather your thoughts then speak again.

A pause helps to control your delivery and allows your "audience" to absorb what you are saying.

Great Public Speakers generally pause for 2-3 seconds or more to ensure 1. Their message is conveyed precisely 2. For reflection of what was said

The next time you speak slow down, pause, breathe and continue speaking.

#3 Filler Words

A filler word is a meaningless word, phrase, or sound that marks a pause or hesitation in speech. Some of the common filler words in English are arm, um, uh, er, ah, like, okay, right, and...and... you know.

Often times in speaking these words are used by most if not all of us while gathering our thoughts. Some may seldom be used while others use these phrases way too often.

In an effort to get your message across eloquently avoid using these filler words. The best method to avoid this is
1. Speak more and less small talk
2. Use the voice note feature and critique your conversations AND your callers (listening to your caller will bring an awareness of what you should also avoid)
