Glendalough 13 Mizunara

Mizunara, meaning water oak, is a oak type that does not grow straight & even tends to grow twisted. As its name implies, it has a high moisture content, and is also more porous than other oak so definitely not the first choice of a Cooper when picking wood to build a barrel to mature whiskey. Nevertheless this style of oak offers very unique tastes and aromas.

It's a very unusual dram, but for all the right reasons.
A flavor profile definitely not common in Irish whiskey.

Nose
The colour is light & the nose offers fruity even citrus yet oaky spices with some apple & sweet floral notes. The wood aroma is different to american oak with a slight clove note that is hard to discribe.

Taste
The taste is dominated by a fruity flavor that is hard to place. Again not a common taste for irish whiskey. There are a lot of nutty spicy (cloves, nutmeg)
I tried adding a drop of water yet I find its better without.

Finish
Mouth warming but not coating the entire palate
An odd mouthfeel. The finish is of medium length and adds some sweeter toffee-vanilla flavours that balance the spice and bitterness. The flavor doesn't stay that long yet another small sip and it's back. I would struggle to tell where this is from by the taste as it is really a very unique yet enjoyable whiskey.

It was great fun in the pub last night & from these pictures especially in the snug.

So for those of you who don't know or are now asking yourself what's a snug?
A snug is a traditional small room within the bar. In some cases like a tiny bar within the bar.

In Ireland where sungs are common there is nothing better than going to the pub with a few friends & successfully getting seats in the snug.

You'll find some great examples of traditional snugs all over Ireland, some of our favorites are in Cork, Kerry, & Dublin. But what is it about these snugs that people enjoy so much? And how did they come to be such a loved feature of the pub?

Long before the speakeasy, there was snugs. It served a number of purposes, For one thing, it was a place where you could go for a drink away from the crowds, anyone who was looking for some privacy. Elsewhere, they were used by people wanting to conduct all sorts of business, anything from asking a girls father for permission to marry her to buying land & selling of animals for example.

In Dublin, Victorian-era snugs were very elaborate. There are still around 20 or so Victorian snugs left in the city. Many others were ripped out during the 1970s when snugs went out of fashion. They came to be considered as a waste of space by some shortsighted publicans. Some thought pubs were like shops with the objective to sell the maximum amount of drink in the minimum amount time, therefore they just took up too much room.

Among pub guests, however, snugs never went out of fashion. People love the traditional snug and it's a feature we are always happy to see.
We thought it would be a great idea to recreate a real snug offering privacy & history in a cosy corner, with a window for direct access to the bar of course.

It's the unique atmosphere a snug gives you. In the hustle & bustle of a busy pub, a snug is a more intimate spot where you can have a good chat over a few drinks & catch up with friends or even better make a few new ones.

The sense of history appeals to us in a big way, as people have sat drank & discussed in snugs for generations before and will do so for many generations more.

Hello friends and the Facebook community.

I'm writing this as now it's time for a big change and a career move after many wonderful years of owning and operating the Salzburg Whiskey Museum in Salzburg Austria.
It was a fantastic experience to transform a somewhat unattractive empty space on a quiet street into the successful business it became.

Those of you who have come to visit me at the museum over the years would probably agree that it's a one-of-a-kind location where I poured my heart and soul into building the business while upholding high standards in everything we did.
However, I have now had to make the extremely difficult decision that did not come easy to sell my shares in the company and look to move on and start my next challenge due to some very different directional goals..........

It has been an amazing experience where I had the opportunity to meet all sorts of interesting people from all around the world and made many new friends in the process.
It was genuinely a labour of love giving the perfect home to all the whiskey along with memorabilia and artefacts I had spent long over a decade collecting

I really enjoyed organizing great live music and events not to mention the countless whiskey tastings and food pairings.
Also, my staff were great, some of whom went on to become close friends.

Now as I begin the search for employment and opportunities I am looking to get back into a sales and business development role once again.
I would also definitely consider starting another Pub / Whiskey bar in a different city if the right location was available as now is the perfect time for me to make such a change as I am also looking to relocate.

If you know of somebody you think I should speak with about a job, potential location or ideas or opportunities please get in touch.
Special thanks to all the fantastic guests, musicians, and employees I've had the pleasure to work with while developing the business.

Much appreciated
Chris

Back in 1759 Arthur Guinness signed a 9000-year lease on a dilapidated brewery at St. James's Gate, Dublin. One of many bold moves that underpinned a legacy of ingenious risk-taking.

But Arthur was more than a daring entrepreneur with a vision to create fantastic stout; he was a philanthropist. He built his brand with people at its heart, funding healthcare and schooling to improve the lives of his workforce and the wider community.

Many people still believe that the recipe for Guinness was discovered by accident when they burnt a batch of beer. The story goes that he sold this batch at discount at the local docks, who all came back asking for more, over the years perfecting it to the beautiful Guinness we know today. Is there really any better partner to drink along side a delicious dram? Perhaps a Murphy's or Beamish for example... yet never the less its hard to beat a creamy pint of Guinness poured with care.

The DUVALE Cachaçaria🇧🇷
In Brazil sugarcane plantations have been producing Cachaça, known as Pinga/Caninha,similar to rum,For a long time, over the years Cachaça had the misfortune of being confused with rum,& for a while it was even classified as BrazilianRum.Both spirits are distilled from sugarcane afterall. Cachaça16th century & Rum from the 14th.But the differences were large enough for Cachaça to finally received its own classification. There are many stories about the origins of Cachaça.It's possible to say that the history of Cachaça begins when the Portuguese brought sugarcane & distillation to Brazil.Around1500 So the first Cachaça may have been distilled between1500/1520,in a sugar mill on the coast. It's possible to say that Cachaça was the 1st spirit in America to be produced on such scale & of great economic relevance.Cachaça is currently the most popular spirit in Brazil.Best known for its use in Caipirunhas.Normally it's a spicy sweet liquor around50%ABV so delivering quite the punch.Perfect for cocktails!Yet in recent years the quality of craft Cachaça is constantly improving & it's becoming a spirit to enjoy on its own. Some might even say that Cachaça is becoming the WhiskeyOfBrazil😉🥃🇧🇷
The DUVALE Cachaçaria has Cachaça aged for many years in a variety of casks, most popular 🇺🇲American & 🇫🇷French Oak.I must admit I was extremely impressed at the quality of what I tried. My favorite was a smooth & really light liquid that had been aged in a French Oak hogshead for over 4years.Remarkably unlike any Cachaça I had tasted. So it was no surprise to hear that DUVALE was recognized as one of the best Cachaça producers in Brazil. In 2016 their aged Cachaça won Silver🥈At the Expocachaça, Today in Brazil there are thousands of alambiques/stills producing Cachaça throughout with varying quality,in every state you will find plenty of people producing Cachaça.According to figures from (IBRAC, 2017)1.3billion liters of Cachaça were produced in just 2017around 9million of those liters for export. At DUVALE they insist that the essence of cachaça is to drink it pure,& I totally agree,Could aged Cachaça become something we starting seeing in Europe❓😉🥃🇧🇷

14/09/2020

A picture from a while ago in the shop with our good friend Johann who is possibly the biggest collector of Glendalough Whiskey we know! 😉🥃
The Mizunara 13 year old is definitely our favorite from Glendalough so far at the Whiskey Museum!
🇮🇪 Quality Irish Whiskey matured in American 🇺🇲 bourbon barrels before being filled into casks made with Mizunara wood from Japan 🇯🇵 Stunning stuff from the Glendalough range.
🆃🅷🅴 🆆🅾🅾🅳
Mizunara Oak 🌳 does not grow straight like traditional oak, it has a very high moisture content and it’s much more porous than other varieties of oak. These issues make the casks highly prone to leaking. Its name, after all, translates to “water oak.” Mizunara Oak needs to be around 200 years old before it can be cut and used for casks. Distillers both in Japan and abroad have a hard time getting their hands on these rare casks
🆃🅷🅴 🅽🅾🆂🅴
Herbal, cinnamon, sage, tea,
pine wood, sugar melon, honey-sweet - overripe mango, spicy and intense.
🆃🅷🅴 🆃🅰🆂🆃🅴
Gives quite an unusual big frist impression. I've not had a taste like this in my glass for a long time - and I like it. Spicy right from the start something very different, certainly wouldn't guess it's from Ireland 🇮🇪 with all this initial spice!
Overall really nice with a good balance of exotic fruity notes & unusual contrasts. However, the taste is much less intense than the smell and the second sip reveals a softer smoother more matured taste. Fading spice with banana, coco, coconut, tea, very unusual, but delicious nice smooth texture, flavor developing with each additional sip.
🆃🅷🅴 🅵🅸🅽🅸🆂🅷
Medium to long, without any real fruity bitterness, dry-spicy wood & chocolate notes take over. very warming and spicy tingling right at the end.

This beautiful rare bottle is no longer available in our shop and unfortunately is no longer even produced 😟 but we do have plenty still available in the in the bar 😊🥃
Our dram of the day 😉

We delighted to announce that we have the full range from the🏰☘️Powerscourt distillery.
All available in both the bar & the shop very soon, Also some special tastings events to coincide with the Austrian lunch🥃🇦🇹🥃🇮🇪🥃
I had the pleasure of visiting their distillery last October.
I got to meet up with their sales manager Ryan Stapleton
Ryan was able to give me a sample of everything to look forward to along with a fantastic tour of their distillery.
After I got to have a chat with legendary Master distillery Nole Sweeney. I must admit we are big fans of his work😉🥃
Noel has received several awards for distilling & whiskey excellence.
In 2017 Nole was inducted into The Whisky 'Hall of Fame'🏆
Nole joined the Cooley Distillery (then John Teeling)
(now BeamSuntory) as quality control manager back in 1989
Having learned from the old masters, Noel’s passion for excellence & quality quickly propelled him to the position of masterblender and chief distiller at Cooley where he stayed for almost 30years, producing absolutely fantastic whiskey. Many rare gems we are happy to have in our collection😉🥃
Nole helped to invigorate the revival of Irish whiskey. The likes of Kilbeggan 15Year Old,& Tyrconnell Madeira, Just some of the fantastic whiskey developed under Noel’s watchful eye & uniquely discerning palate.
Along with countless others & many rare gems for independents like Cadenheads of Campbeltown, & yes we do have these available to try.
Over his many years of careful craftsmanship, he has developed a worldwide🌍🥃reputation for his dedication, passion for the liquid & determination for the highest quality of whiskey.
In mid 2017,Noel joined Powerscourt. Once again fulfilling the role of blender & masterdistiller. Bringing his tremendous skill & experience, something that will ensure constant innovation, not to mention the delivery of new, exciting & premium expressions under the Powerscourt brands.
Therefore we are absolutely delighted to be working together with Nole,Ryan & the whole team at the Powerscourt Distillery. We look forward to inviting them to Salzbug next year🇮🇪🥃🇦🇹
