With personalized sessions and real-life advice from industry experts and fellow entrepreneurs, the Marc Impact Network is designed to help ventures navigate the complexities of securing investment and funding.

📚 Sustainable change in any sector, including education, starts with fostering innovation and entrepreneurship—and mental health is a key part of this equation.

Andreas Ambros-Lechner, keynote speaker at yesterday’s Treffpunkt Bildung, co-founder of - Social Business and general secretary of the Bildungsstiftung , emphasized a crucial yet often overlooked aspect of education: happiness and well-being. With rising concerns about youth mental health, it’s time to rethink how we approach learning environments.

Key insights shared at the event included:

- 60% struggle with concentration, exacerbated by excessive smartphone use (over 213 minutes per day).
- Mental health remains a pressing issue, and it’s clear that European education systems still have a long way to go in addressing it.
- Integrating Social-Emotional Learning, SEL into the Programme for International Student Assessment PISA framework could help tackle these challenges.

PISA traditionally assesses academic performance in areas like reading, math, and science, however it is now recognizing the need to measure social-emotional competencies and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is an evidence-based approach that is gaining global attention for its role in student development. SEL goes beyond traditional academics, focusing on critical life skills like emotional intelligence, self-awareness, empathy, and resilience. This shift acknowledges that academic success alone is not enough for holistic student development.

💡 The event concluded with a dynamic Barcamp session, where participants addressed critical topics such as:

- Promoting well-being and mental health in schools
- Conflict resolution skills for students
- The importance of teaching mental health early in education
- Inclusion efforts that go beyond surface-level implementation

💡 Treffpunkt.Bildung https://treffpunktbildung.at/ is organised in collaboration with MEGA Bildungsstiftung TGW Future Privatstiftung https://www.tgw-future.org/ , BildungTomorrow https://bildung-tomorrow.at/kontakt/ and Impact Hub Vienna, hosted at Future Health Lab.

🏢 Urban Heat Islands, also known as UHIs, are one of the significant challenges Vienna faces. These are densely built-up areas in cities that are considerably warmer than surrounding areas due to human activities. A clear example of the effect UHIs have are the tropical nights we experienced this summer in Vienna, where temperatures stayed above 25°C during the night in the Inner City.

🌡 Several factors contribute to UHIs, including reduced vegetation, intense human activities, and the city's urban geometry. To tackle this, the Stadt Wien, within the MA22 developed the UHI Strategy focusing on mitigating the effects of these heat islands. However, more innovative business solutions are needed!

Do you have a business idea to combat Urban Heat Islands? Submit it to Re:Wien before the deadline— You have only one week left to submit it! https://bit.ly/ReWien2024

Struggling to come up with a solution? One example is green roofs, like those created by , which are designed to be easily installed even on Vienna’s inclined rooftops. 🏗️ Did you know that the built environment is a major contributor to environmental impact across Europe? Improper handling of demolition waste often leads to landfill disposal, causing soil and water contamination. However, recycling can mitigate these issues and foster sustainable urban development.

Markus Meissner, co-founder of BauKarusell, accepted the challenge!

🏢 By 2050, more than two-thirds of the world’s population will reside in urban areas. This wave of urbanization presents challenges that require sustainable solutions, and social entrepreneurs stand out with innovative business ideas that resonated deeply at Bridge for Cities 2024. UNIDO - United Nations Industrial Development Organization

💡 Through our strategic partnership with UNIDO, we showcased startups that create more sustainable cities in the Youth Zone at the Bridge for Cities conference. This platform highlighted our program alumni, Plantika and Hempstatic , who are redefining city living through green roofs and sustainable construction materials. Additionally, the Better Mobility Accelerator Pop-up sparked conversations about how mobility can be more inclusive and effective for everyone.

🏢 Creating lasting change isn’t just the domain of experienced founders; it thrives in the fresh ideas and bold perspectives of young changemakers. In Austria, a significant number of social enterprises are less than 10 years old, a testament to the dynamic innovation that the next generation is bringing to the table. This vibrant energy took center stage at the Fireside Chat on “Youth and the Urban Future,” also hosted at Bridge for Cities, where participants delved into how cities can empower young entrepreneurs to make a real impact.

💡 The discussion featured inspiring insights from Claudia Falkinger, Co-founder and Managing Director at Point& and the Better Mobility Accelerator; Alexis Eremia, co-founder of Impact Hub Vienna; Charlotte Gockel, Impact Startups Financing Lead at the Wirtschaftsagentur Wien - Vienna Business Agency ; and Jonas Dinger, Managing Director at Impact Award Austria.

Here’s what emerged from the conversation:
- Governments have a key role to play in empowering young people to envision and actively shape their cities.

- Collaboration between startups and organizations isn’t just beneficial—it’s essential. When these sectors come together, they amplify each other’s strengths and impact.
- True collaboration goes beyond contracts and transactions; it’s about sharing knowledge and creating value that elevates everyone involved.

💡 This conversation was a powerful reminder that young changemakers are the leaders of tomorrow and are driving the solutions of today, with cities serving as their launchpads for action and impact.

🏢 As our cities grow, it becomes increasingly essential to guide their development in ways that are both sustainable and equitable. And what better way to do this than through social entrepreneurship?

💡 Social entrepreneurship reshapes our world for the better, but to scale its power, we need to move beyond the bubble. What will it take to make social entrepreneurship mainstream?

The answer lies in strengthening an ecosystem built on collaboration, research, investment and advocacy. That’s why we partnered for the Social Enterprise Monitor, which recently shared its 2023-2024 insights at WU (Vienna University of Economics and Business).

⚡ The findings highlight the state of social enterprises in Austria and, more importantly, reveal what’s needed to bring their impact to the forefront. Congratulations to Peter Vandor and Reinhard Millner from the Social Entrepreneurship Center at WU (Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien) for 15 months of hard and dedicated work.

Where to focus the support for social enterprises?

📍 While Vienna is the heart of social entrepreneurship in Austria (hosting 50% of these enterprises), there’s a need to inspire growth across regions: just look at where are the rest of the social enterprises located: Steiermark (13%), Niederösterreich (9.8%), Oberösterreich (6.9%), Tirol (5.8%), Vorarlberg (5.2%), Salzburg (5.8%), Kärnten (2,3%) and Burgenland (0,6%). A shoutout to fellow organizations working also for this goal! Impact Hub Tirol Social Business Hub Styria Social Impact Award AustrianStartups, Future Privatstiftung Ashoka Austria@npoAustria an der WU Wien Wirtschaftsagentur Wien - Vienna Business Agency

Why do we advocate for social enterprises?

🚶‍♀️ Social enterprises walk the talk. They work for creating impact and better realities in areas like health, well-being, equality, climate action, education and more, but they also are inclusive in their employment opportunities to thousands in Austria. Plus, did you know that 50% of the Social enterprises have female leadership and that 47% of them have a female founder?

⚡ Social entrepreneurs are innovators, whether with their products and services or with business and governance models. This only points to the fact that social entrepreneurs have the creativity and adaptability to create positive impact and sustainable businesses.

🛑 However, for their work to truly scale, we must remove the barriers to innovation and make these solutions visible and accessible to everyone. It is not easy. In fact, social entrepreneurs face high complexity in public financing, limited public support, weak lobbying, and economic barriers.

To break through these obstacles, we need to break the bubble, we need coordinated strategies that simplify access to resources, open up funding, and create supportive national policies that champion social enterprises as key drivers of positive change. hashtag is an initiative working towards that goal.

There's much more to learn from (and about) Social Enterprises. We'll leave the link to the publication on the comments section.

At Impact Hub Vienna, sustainability has always been part of our DNA. But this year, we decided to take a major leap forward by developing an ambitious Sustainability Roadmap aimed at achieving net-zero emissions by 2030.

This roadmap is the result of months of careful planning, collaboration, and reflection. In this blog post, written by Jakob Detering, want to share not only what this roadmap looks like but also the challenges we faced and the lessons we learned along the way —and to inspire other organizations to follow suit. Whether you’re just starting out or further along in your sustainability efforts, these insights can guide you in developing a meaningful roadmap toward net zero.

Food is both a source of nourishment and a complex global challenge. 🤔 We face the Food Paradox: how to feed a growing population while preserving our planet?

As the world's population expands, our demand for food is increasing. But, conventional agriculture and food production are major contributors to climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource depletion.

🍏 The Solution:

- Shift towards sustainable and regenerative farming practices that prioritise soil health, reduce chemical use, and promote biodiversity.
- Embrace sustainable diets to reduce the environmental impact of meat production.
- Minimise food waste at every stage of the supply chain - from production to consumption.
- Sourcing local and seasonal produce can collectively reduce the carbon footprint of our meals.

The food paradox may seem daunting, but change is possible! By working together, we can nourish the world while preserving our planet for future generations.

🏛 "It’s election season in Austria. The streets are filled with campaign posters, TV debates are endless, and your social media feed is probably overflowing with election ads. The air is thick with talk about Austria's many societal challenges—rising inflation, the climate crisis, education, healthcare, and more.

💡 While politicians are busy outdoing each other with detailed descriptions of these issues, their proposed solutions often feel repetitive and superficial. Sometimes, I’d like to shout to these campaigning politicians: Take a look at the growing field of social entrepreneurship! And they wouldn't even have to look far. Right here in Austria, deeply embedded in our communities, countless social entrepreneurs are showing us another way—demonstrating how we can tackle big societal problems with innovative, business-oriented approaches".
