Do you know what Maritati means?

Maritati is a kind of pasta (made from durum wheat semolina) which combines the union of homemade macaroni and orecchiette.

The name ‘Maritati’, which in South Italy means ‘married’, indicates the sexual union in marriage between a woman and a man. Precisely for this reason, in the tradition of Apulian weddings, recipes for first courses with maritati were prepared in the wedding lunch, as a good omen for the newlyweds.

In detail, the groom’s grandmother used to prepare the macaroni, while the bride’s grandmother took care of the orecchiette, a symbol of female sexuality.
