🏏 CRICKET UPDATE 🏏

In the last match heading in to the break, only our A-Grade men played a match after the opponent for our B-Grade forfeited. The captains quickly re-jigged our teams to give some old bodies a rest (more beer drinking time) and some of our younger players an extra opportunity for some time in the middle.

Batting first against Enfield United, Riley Hutt continued a nice patch of form with 29*, supported very well by Jake Burgess (19). Unfortunately, those two and Tamoor Sarfraz (17) were the only batsmen to reach double figures. Defending 97, we managed to generate opportunities in the field but just couldn't quite capitalise, eventually losing by five wickets. Brayden Hamdorf (2/24) and Harley Nagel (1/3) managed to find some success with some tidy bowling.

Cricket resumes for all our teams from the second week in January, but all players are encourage to stay tuned to our socials for more details regarding the traditional mid-season, whole-club internal T20 on Saturday January 4th.

🏏CRICKET UPDATE 🏏

On Saturday, our B-Grade faced off against Dublin at home. In the field to start, we saw captain Sid Puri (4/41), Mat Olesnicky (2/16) and young Lachlan Hall (2/17) work hard all day to dismiss Dublin for 222. Unfortunately, solid innings from Rayyan Ahmed (35) and Mat Olesnicky (28) couldn't drag us over the line with the bat, ultimately falling 76 runs short. Congratulations to Jude Meiksans-Brown and Ajay Singh from the Under 14's who made their senior debuts in this match and had a great day despite the loss.

Meanwhile, the A-Grade took on Dublin at Eyre Royals. Bowling first, we saw the spoils shared around, with seven different players chiming in with wickets, headlined by Alex Voon (3/3) and Aaron Burgess (2/9 with an outstanding four maidens). Set a target of 120, Scott (46) and Nick Raymond (34) did the bulk of the damage before Riley Hutt chimed in with 18 off eight balls including a massive six down the ground to seal a five wicket win.

Over at the Under 14s, our lads battled the scorching heat on Sunday to fall just one wicket short of a win. Noah Raven (36*) and Ajay Singh (24*) helped us to set 120 for ANCA to chase. Connor Grantham (2/10) and Jude Meiksans-Brown (2/18) fought hard, supported very well by their team mates, but it was always going to be a tall order with just eight players available. In any case, it's an effort to be proud of and they showed true Fitzroy spirit and commitment. That was the last round for our juniors before the break, resuming cricket on 12th of January.

Our women's team did not get a game this week as all matches on Monday were abandoned due to the 41 degree forecast out north. That was the last round for the ladies before the break and they will resume on the 13th of January, looking to sure up a finals position currently sitting in fourth spot.

There is only one game tomorrow - the A-Grade against Enfield at Sam Johnson Sportsground. We'll be switching on the barbecue from approximately 4pm to see us through to the break with some food and drink together. The barbecue will have vegetarian / halal / meat-a-tarian friendly food, so we encourage all who are linked to cricket at Fitzroy in some way to come down and celebrate with us!

🏏CRICKET UPDATE 🏏

On Saturday, the B-Grade headed to Valley View to take on the Adelaide Warriors. Batting first, we saw young brothers Obaidullah Ahmed (45) and Rayyan Ahmed (22*) both make starts before Fitzroy were dismissed for 108. Fitzroy worked hard to defend the total with Lachlan Hall (2/9) and David Blowes (1/21) our best bowlers, however the Warriors chased their target in around 20 overs. The B-Grade will be looking to bounce back tomorrow against Dublin at home.

The A-Grade played the Knights at home and saw Justin Keast hit his second century of the season from as many games. Keast (126) and Robert Henderson (36) set the Knights a target of 228, which we comfortably defended. Between Dan Symonds (3/6) and Alex Voon (2/18), Fitzroy dismissed the Knights for 106, giving us a 122 run win and plenty of momentum going in to tomorrow's match against Dublin at Eyre Royals.

Our ladies team didn't have much luck this week, going down to Salisbury West by 10 wickets. Emily Bryant (32*) and Lisa Kirby (22) both got good starts against some tight bowling from Salisbury West, while Corrine Clifford (0/14) and Lisa Kirby (0/16) tried hard to restrict them when it was our turn to field. The senior women will take on Virginia at Virginia this Monday.

Our junior side had the bye and are scheduled to host ANCA on Sunday, which may well be abandoned due to the forecast sweltering conditions. We'll keep you posted.

Zooper Doopers and Fruit Boxes all round... that's a wrap on Fitzroy's Cricket Blast Program for 2024!

Thanks to the all the future cricketing superstars and their parents for participating every Saturday morning over the past eight weeks.

Special thanks to Ruth Jones for establishing and leading the program and Nick Raymond, Sarah Foot and Lyndon Foot for helping out. It has been great fun!

We're also excited to announce that Ruth has been selected for Cricket Australia's Project Inspire, aimed at training and empowering women in leadership roles at cricket clubs. The project will consist of a series of seminars, culminating in a trip to the Women's Ashes Test at the MCG early next year.

🏏Cricket Update 🏏

Good news! Last weekend, after a couple of forfeits against them, our B-Grade finally got to have a game, taking on Athelstone at home. Bowling first, David Blowes (2/8) and Kiran Mundlapudi (2/9) were our best bowlers out of the eight players that had a bowl where we saw a very even contribution through everyone. In reply, Obaidullah Ahmed (61) and Tamoor Sarfraz (51*) saw us take a strong eight wicket win. For everyone at the ground, the best part of the day was seeing one of our Under 14's, Johnny Palmer, debut alongside his dad Dave, both performing beautifully!

Meanwhile, the A-Grade travelled up Grand Junction Road to take on Para Vista. Batting first, we saw captain Hunter Dwyer pull together a very well made 53 and Brendan Lines contributing 30 on our way to 166. With the ball, it was Dan Symonds (2/5) and Luke Tylkowski (2/25) that did their fair share of the damage to keep Para Vista to 101, resulting in a 65 run Fitzroy win.

The ladies match was unfortunately abandoned due to the pouring rain on Monday night, and our Under 14s had the bye so both will be raring to go next week.

Tomorrow, our A-Grade men will take on old C&CCA and ICCA rivals North-Eastern Knights at home, whilst the B-Grade are heading to Valley View for a top-of-the-table clash with Adelaide Warriors. Our women face Salisbury West in a T20 on Monday evening at Salisbury West. All spectators welcome!
