In the 17th century in Holland tulips were a rare and exotic flower and people were swept up in a speculative fever, sometimes spending a year’s salary on a rare bulb in the hope of selling it at a profit. It is ironic that the most “valuable” tulips were those with a mosaic virus causing stripes of colour on the petals. The tulip bubble burst in 1637 leaving many investors destitute.
