Just finished a huge job cutting back the “Large” Salvias. I commence the cutting down of all old stems, to one node, of the big Salvias that flower between late Autumn and Spring, in early November and plan to finish before New Year’s Day. I used to be very confused about which Salvias to cut, ie before Lindy guided me to realise that I needed to check when they are supposed to flower. My pruning has been chaotic in the past, so consequently these Salvias flowered at any time! No idea when they preferred to flower. Once I discovered those Salvias designed to flower between May and October, I could then plan to cut after October. This is my timeline. November: 1) all my S. gesneriifloras; ie brown calyx (one of my two pictured above; black calyx ( also known as “Tequila”), green calyx, I have two big ones to chop down; 2) My two enormous “Timboons”. December: 1) karwinskii crosses ie: “Red Sprite”, I removed one of two after the cutting back; “Pink Gruyère”, after several shifts in the past, I am finally happy with its position; and two “Romantic Rose”. And finally S. tubifera and S. longistyla. This all produced several mountains of branches which Gary mulched most of. I am thrilled with the massive “Tidy up”. Now I can think straight for planning the Spring Open Garden Weekend. (1-2 November) this year. Also able to complete placement of Summer/Autumn perennials.

The gorgeous red berries are on Viburnum plicatrum tomentosum “Mareisii” and the pinkish toned petals are on Viburnum plicatrum tomentosum. I love both varieties but the pinkish toned petals , which have recently appeared on V p tomentosum just blow me away! It seems like two completely different flowering shrubs for “The price of one.”

Storm warning so I grabbed some Lillium images before a potential flattening deluge. Never happened! Just a steady soaking rain most of the night and today. Good to have a record of late November’s show. The pink and the white “Christmas Lillies” next to come.

Salvia pratensis “Sweet Esmeralda”. Returns after cutting back through the Spring and early Summer months. I will divide this after it’s first cut back. I have a space in the “Dryish” garden where a few could grow and self seed. Some Salvias can be thugs when allowed to self seed, this one is just about perfect for the task.

Alpine Aster. My “Go-to” plant for low growing flowers Spring till end of Autumn. I haven’t noticed this in nurseries for years and years. Is it rare, or just overlooked by buyers? We cut it down 3 or so times over the months and it always comes back. I can’t think of another perennial that does what this marvellous perennial does. Does anybody else know this plant and value it as I do?

Salvia “Sweet Esmeralda” fills a corner for several weeks as I am deadheading it every so often. There is variety in the colours as the hoods open and colours fade.
