I do weddings of all sorts, from simple elopements to traditional (or not so traditional) ceremonies with 200 or more guests! Other ceremonies conducted are baby namings, vow renewals and commitment ceremonies.

❤️❤️ FRAMING THE CEREMONY SPACE ❤️❤️

I've seen many ways to frame the ceremony space, but Saturday's wedding with Lauren and John would have to be one of the most unique!

For this farm wedding, Lauren's dad spent many an hour lovingly crafting this "little white chapel" facade as a surprise for his daughter. (and sourcing and painting the chairs to match!)

It was truly spectacular, and even though Saturday's weather was dodgy, there was no way we would not have the wedding ceremony there!

The wind blew, the showers came and went, but as soon as we saw some blue sky in the west, everyone grabbed a chair for a quick set-up. John and Laura exchanged vows and rings, perfectly framed in that doorway, with Lauren's dad unable to wipe the smile from his face.

Another spectacular surprise was the delivery of the wedding rings! I can't wait to share that! 😜

✔️ mention personality characteristics that you adore
✔️ say what you are really grateful for
✔️ end with a couple of decent promises to your partner
✔️ PRACTISE, PRACTISE, PRACTISE!

DON'T
❌️ copy something from Google
❌️ use chat GPT (everyone will know and it won't sound like you)

KEEPING IT AUTHENTIC

Ellen and Paul are two of the loveliest people you will ever meet and their wedding truly reflected their laid back personalities.

They ditched the formal wedding dinner for a pizza truck, kept their wedding crew to one (Ellen's sis, Lauren, who walked the aisle with their baby), had live music for the ceremony and after party (top priority for this dancing and music loving duo) and called in the creative talents of to adorn the space with colour and life. Ellen is an incredible gardener, so it was fitting that their floral installation was an explosion of flowers and fruit - and it looked magnificent.

Authenticity always for the win!

PRE-CEREMONY CHATS ❤️

Everyone has gathered, the air is full of loving excitement as we wait for the bride to arrive....

What do we talk about in those intense, pre-ceremony, anticipatory minutes? Anything at all really - footy scores, honeymoon plans, favourite restaurants, anything to ease the tension and have a bit of a laugh.

The only thing I DON'T ask is 'Are you nervous?' (So many others ask this, and I find it never helps, so it's off the table for me).

I want both parties to feel calm and relaxed going into their wedding ceremony, ready to ENJOY it! All part of the service!

READINGS IN AUSTRALIAN WEDDINGS?

When asked, 'Nah' is the usual answer, but I still love slipping an occasional quote into a ceremony, like these gorgeous words from C.S. Lewis.

Next week, I have a secret elopement and have used these words in the introduction - just seemed perfect for these two

Another note about readings, they should never be included to pad out a ceremony, only if there's something that really speaks to you about your love and your story.

If there's a special person in your life you'd love to include in your ceremony, you might ask them to do a reading.

And readings don't need to always be poetry - think song lyrics, passages from novels and children's books, words from movies and TV shows.

HOBART - I ❤️ YOU!!

Memories of evening walks along the dreamy Hobart waterfront last weekend while participating in Festival of Voices

A fun fact about me - I am a singer, and one of my favourite things to do is sing with the incredible bunch of women that is Women of Note Bendigo!

Last weekend, we sang our little hearts out in all sorts of places around Hobart - the city mall, the Town Hall, the Farmgate Market, the Singers' Lounge, Federation Concert Hall and even an apple orchard!

We also heard some unbelievable singing in some very beautiful places.

My heart was bursting with joy (and still is) as I reminisce about the wonder of those four days.

Thank you, Hobart and Festival of Voices - I cannot wait to return 🎶🎶🎶

WHY I LOVE BUSH WEDDINGS ❤️

~ they're private
~ they're quiet
~ they're all different
~ they are surrounded by natural beauty
~ I adore the background soundtrack of birds calling and leaves rustling in the breeze

And there are sometimes surprises to be found like this wedge tailed eagles' nest that we discovered walking through our bush last weekend!

WELL HELLO!

It's winter, big weddings slow down, and the cold can get a bit grim, but I'm still meeting, planning, writing and rewriting!

Apart from creating fabulous, engaging and romantic ceremonies with a light touch, I put my whole heart into their delivery! I want you and your guests to ADORE your ceremony . I have a pretty good time too!

"Mawwiage, mawwiage is what bwings us togever today......"

And so began this Princess Bride obsessed couple's ceremony! I kept the theme going when telling their story:

"Like all great love stories, this one begins with some very familiar words, Once upon a time in a land far away - known as ...... Bendigo, our two protagonists first noticed each other in the most romantic of places - their year 10 English classroom!

Our heroine, Sabrina, was in deep discussion with her neighbour about how Romeo and Juliet died, with Harry politely listening from the sidelines. The handsome, strong and silent type, Harry finally butted into the conversation with his view on the Shakespearean classic, announcing that in his view it was "super dumb!"

This was such a fun ceremony, beginning with beer boys handing out drinks from a wheelbarrow, a gentle wedding crew roast and of course, Harry and Sabrina's love story written as a fairytale.

Don't be afraid to go your own way with celebrating your commitment to each other. I will listen and throw in some ideas of my own - that's how a truly authentic ceremony is created!

SIGNING IT OFF

Who will be your witnesses? Caleb and Astrid chose their two mums (just look at how proud they are!).

Witnesses can be anyone over 18 who has heard and understood the ceremony. It's an honour and a joy to be a witness, as they are the first ones there for a congratulatory hug and to have a quiet moment with the couple.

Having a witness raffle is also fun and brings unexpected joy to those selected! 🥰

This photo of Tyler, making lifelong promises to Aimee, is exactly why I suggest you all stand together, especially for a tiny wedding or elopement!

Aimee and Tyler's kids were so excited that mum and dad were getting married. They proudly presented the wedding rings with style, and were certainly right there with them when it came to the vows. Check out that tiny hand of encouragement on dad's shoulder! Simply adorable ❤️❤️❤️

THE CHANGING NATURE OF THE "BRIDAL PARTY" (or in my preferred gender neutral language, wedding party, wedding crew, I do crew, wedding mates etc)

Once upon a time, she had 3 or 4 girlfriends on her side and he had the matching number of men standing next to him (often in carefully curated height order, yes really! 😳).

But oh, I love how this has evolved over the last few years. This is how I see 'wedding parties' now:

* they don't always walk down the aisle with you
* they don't always stand up the front beside you
* sometimes they may get ready with you
* you may designate a special 'maid of honour ' and 'best man' but sometimes that's way too hard (and anyone over 18 years can witness the marriage documents)
* they don't always wear matching outfits or be the same gender as you

Some couples decide to have no wedding party at all! That's OK too!

Whatever you decide and whoever you invite to be your wedding day crew, make sure they are your best people, the ones who are going to look out for you, have a fun time, bring the party vibe and be truly invested in being a part of a very special moment in your lives. It's a great honour.

Hello! I'm back!

Once again, after visiting my beautiful son in New York. This is my third trip to NY, so I've already seen most of the big ticket places. This time, I wandered the streets and galleries, ventured out of Manhattan, became an expert at negotiating the subway and simply absorbed life in this incredible city.

WET WEATHER ELOPEMENT - yeah, no big deal!

Today took me and Jess to the Oak Forest in Harcourt for an elopement.

Yes, it was wet, but we found a dryish spot under the trees for the legal words to be said. Rings were popped on fingers and the documents signed.

NO ONE CARED ABOUT THE WEATHER! Elopements are pretty quick and everyone who is invited is rapt to be there, so why complain?

Our Elope Bendigo couples are the best! And Jess and I are super flexible to go with whatever they want.

I know when people roll their eyes when I ask them about wedding ceremonies they have been to - they are thinking long and boring 😴.

I refuse to write ceremonies like that! 22 minutes or so of all the good stuff about a couple and definitely not telling the guests what they already know!

Beautiful Anna wore a white linen dress and a blue bow in her hair when she married her Andy at the sublime Byronsvale .

Here I am telling a love story with WARMTH, CONFIDENCE and VIBRANCY.

There are many things that make a ceremony pop.

Creating a great narrative and being able to engage the guests is what it's all about. Experience is a key, but so are the presentation skills of the storyteller.

Any registered celebrant can marry you, but we are not all the same!

How do you choose who is the best celebrant for you?

✅️ Ask around your friends and work colleagues.

✅️ Ask your other vendors for recommendations - venues, photographers and videographers

✅️ Read google reviews

✅️ Check them out on social media - not just for pretty pictures but for how they present and WHAT THEY SAY

✅️ Give them a call or arrange a Zoom meeting ( )

✅️ Do all of the above before you send off an email to 10 celebrants asking, "How much for a wedding ceremony?"

Good luck with your search and one last point, if your ceremony is important to you, BOOK YOUR CELEBRANT EARLY!

OATHING STONE RITUAL - no need to get scared by the word 'ritual'!

It just means a special moment in a ceremony that adds something over and above the words being spoken .

Here, two stones - one from Shetland, one from Turkey, were held while the couple exchanged vows, symbolising their vows being 'cast in stone' as well as acknowledging their ancestry. Just beautiful really! ❤️
