Having moved here relatively recently, our Local Connector for The Welcome Experience, Sarah Soto, is the perfect person to help Essential Workers who move to the Coffs Harbour Local Government Area or Bellingen Shire to connect with their new community.

The Welcome Experience is a free service facilitated by the Boambee East Community Centre in our region. It includes information and support to encourage essential workers and their partners to move to our region and to help them to move and settle here, if they decide to make that move.

As our Local Connector, assisted by other staff and volunteers at our Centre, Sarah provides assistance and support to these essential workers and their families, including:
* Relocation : Helping them to prepare for the move, including providing a rundown of what to expect and organising a reliable removalist.
* Housing: Connecting them with trusted real estate agencies to help find a place to call home.
* Education & childcare: Recommending schooling and childcare options for their kids.
* Social connections: Connecting to sports clubs, social groups and community organisations so they can meet like-minded individuals and establish community connections.
* Employment: Supporting them (and their partners) to find relevant, meaningful employment.
* Accessibility & healthcare: Providing information on disability support, healthcare and other services providers.
* Leisure & recreation: Providing local knowledge on the best activities and events happening around town.
* Cultural connections: Providing information and introductions to cultural communities.

You can find more information about the service, including details of which essential workers are covered here: https://www.nsw.gov.au/regional-nsw/makethemove/welcome-experience

Essential workers wishing to take advantage of the service can submit an enquiry at the above page. If they indicate that they are considering our region, their enquiry will be forwarded to us.

Sarah Soto found a sense of community in Coffs Harbour when she started trail running. 🏃‍♀️

“I’ve always run, but never with intention,” she said. “Joining the Coffs Trail Runners group was life-changing for me. At first, I felt intimidated, but that quickly disappeared once I met everyone. I finally found people to talk running with, learn from, and go on runs together.”

Having personally experienced moving to a regional town, Sarah understands the adjustment that comes with it. That’s why she’s signed up to be a Local Connector with the Welcome Experience.

“It can be hard to find your circle of friends or people you connect with, and it takes time,” she said. “I want to be that bridge for people when they arrive, helping them connect to things they enjoy and, ultimately, to people who share similar interests.”

Sarah moved to Coffs Harbour with her New Yorker Puerto Rican husband and their son after living in New York and Puerto Rico for 17 years. With both the beach and the bush, Coffs Harbour keeps Sarah’s surfing husband happy, but fulfills her own need for the bush.

“I can easily access nature by running up the Solitary Islands walk, which is just five minutes from home, or I can drive ten minutes to Sealy Lookout, where a multitude of hiking tracks await. Being surrounded by trees really feels like home to me.” ➡️nsw.gov.au/welcomeexperience
