Samm & Thomas’ wedding day was not the bright sunshiney day they had hoped for but despite the weather they had a gorgeous ceremony in the Coach house at out of the elements with their loved ones. Sometimes plan B is just as beautiful as plan A.

Stela had a vision for a colourful garden party for her wedding at so we decided that low urns would allow her to enjoy the gardens as well as have all the flowers. I loved the simplicity of this set up yet it had such an impact! And those peonies 🥰😍💗

With the Easter long weekend, I decided to move our weekly flower focus to today instead of Monday (also I may have forgotten that yesterday was indeed Monday until later in the day 😉🤭).

This week I thought we’d spotlight a native Australian flower for the native lovers out there! So let’s look at the Banksia Prionotes.

The Banksia Prionotes are native to the sandy soils of Western Australia, but are grown across the country in most areas except where there is too much humidity. It is an important feature in the cut flower industry and is therefore a popular choice for native arrangements.

This banksia is available in abundance at the markets at the moment and is usually available throughout summer, autumn and winter.

These guys are big mummas and so work best as focal flowers in larger arrangements; think statement ceremony pieces and reception table eye catchers.

Do you have a favourite native flower? Tell me what it is below ⬇️

Given that it’s Easter week, I couldn’t go past showcasing the Easter Daisy. 🌼

While the Easter daisy isn’t a showstopper or a focal flower, it’s soft and gentle sensibilities makes it a beautiful filler flower in your arrangements, especially if you’re looking at a gardenesque scene for your florals, amongst your larger focal blooms.

As the name suggests, these particular daisies flower during autumn and are widely available around Easter.

The Easter daisy symbolises purity, innocence, and loyalty.

It comes in white, pink, and purple and will enhance any colour palette that is using those shades.

The Easter daisy is native to North America and is part of the Aster family of flowers.

Can you believe we’re past the half way mark of March already?! And down here in the Highlands it has certainly reached the start of the cooler weather, which means the summer flowers will start to slow down, but it does also mean we get to start seeing the cooler weather flowers, and what has started to pop up at the markets over the last few weeks is TULIPS!

You’re probably thinking ‘how can this be? They are a late winter/early spring bulb!’, and you are correct about that, but Australian tulips for the cut flower industry are grown in huge glasshouses in Victoria so the season starts early for florists. However, when we are getting local, farm product, these guys aren’t available til August/ September.

So if you’re a lover of tulips (like one of my April brides) and are getting married over autumn/winter/spring, we should be able to get them for you 🌷

Did you know that there are over 3000 varieties of tulips! Wow! And they come in every colour except blue (sorry blue 😢). Tulip petals are also edible, but don’t go chomping on your tulip petals that you bought at the florist as they would have most likely been sprayed with pesticides.

Interesting fact - in the Netherlands in the 1600s tulips were so expensive that they were said to cost 10 times more than the working man’s salary!! Tulips still aren’t the cheapest flower but can you imagine paying that much?!

So many things you may not have known about tulips so here’s a few tips to know as a cut flower. Once the tulip is cut it will continue to grow for up to an inch, which means we as designers need to accommodate for that when making your bouquets and arrangements so that the new height of the tulip doesn’t sit weirdly amongst the other flowers. They will also grow towards the sun, so need to be keep out of direct light.

I love tulips, do you?

What’s still in bloom in March as the weather starts to cool? Well, because we still have more warm days than cool days we still get to enjoy the beauty of the shasta daisy. This sweet bloom is the perfect addition to any wedding with a garden party vibe.

The shasta daisy works beautifully along side other summer blooms like chamomile/fever few, dahlias, roses, zinnias to name but a few!

The floral symbol of this daisy is purity, innocence, new beginnings, joy, and cheerfulness.

Back in the Victorian Era, if you gave someone a bunch of daisies, you’d be telling them that their secret was safe with you!
