A public statement from Pip Mills and Sheila Howat (founding co-directors Blues at Bridgetown 1993-1998)
1993 seems like it was so long ago – mobile phones were a novelty, the world wide web was slow in getting to small rural communities, most printed communication was by fax and music was largely produced on cassette.
It was in that environment that we set out to create an annual event that would grow and evolve to ensure longevity.
Blues at Bridgetown was not just about the genre – it was also about an emerging tourism industry and image building for our community and the surrounding region.
We are thrilled that the current management have embraced the dream and the need to contemporise Blues at Bridgetown – the programme for 2024 reflects all, and more, of our aspirations from 1993.
Our objectives as stated in 1993, and revised in 1996, included statements such as
“will explore the origins of the Blues, it’s evolution to the form practised today, and the reasons for it’s widespread acceptance in the community”
“foster worldwide appreciation of our depth of talent and evolving treatment of the genre.”
Hence the programmes 1993,94,95,96 state the inclusion of acts that performed
Blues, Texas Swing,
H***y Tonk Piano, Jazz – Contemporary and Trad,
Comedy, Roots,
Chicago Blues, West Coast Blues,
Country Blues, Rockabilly,
Soul, Rhythm and Blues,
Ragtime, Jug,
Gypsy Music, Cajun,
Funk Rock Fusion, Gospel,
Funk Jazz, Louisiana,
Funk, Blues Rock,
Delta Swing, Folk Blues,
Celtic, Electric Blues,
Indi Rock Folk Grunge.

In our first publicly presented working document we quoted David Reid, a former Shire President, who said “The Bridgetown Greenbushes Shire is steeped in history, natural beauty and stability and yet has an air of vitality emanating from the diversity of the people who have chosen it as their home”
The 2024 Blues at Bridgetown programme represents that same air of diversity – it is both refreshing and exciting !!!
