The garden is looking stunning v this morning. Not long before we’ll have hardy annuals ready for mixed bunches but in the meantime the tulips are SPECTACULAR! Yes it’s Tulip time 💛 The first blooms to grace the Earth Blooms garden are always the tulips and what a fantastic feast for flower deprived eyes they are! I’m now pulling them (bulbs on or off) to order. Next week I’ll have a soft buttery yellow with super long stems called ‘World Friendship’, a superbly shaped white with green edges called ‘Antarctic’, the always perfect ‘Pink Impression’ and a sexy deep pink ‘Ace Pink’. There are mid and late seasons varieties still to come. Happy days . $4- per stem. You can order as many or as few as you like while stocks last. I had such a lovely day preparing for this weekends Dahlia Dig & Divide workshops. The house was full of the smell of cakes baking and even flowers (at last!) . Isn’t getting ready to receive guests into your home one of life’s great pleasures? Today I just feel blessed that I have a home and a garden that I can enjoy and share . We planted 1200 tulip bulbs yesterday. It’s a labour of love, hope and trust planting bulbs isn’t it? (We won’t talk about the sore backs, drenching rain, muddy clothes and frozen fingers - that might ruin the romance 🤣). The new bed was made over existing yarrow and solidago we could never have dug out. Cardboard, homemade soil mix, sheep manure, compost and straw were layered. We pulled back the straw, planted the bulbs into the new mix and then lay the straw back on top. The rain is now watering them in . Keep your fingers crossed for beautiful blooms in August. There are plenty of our favourite’Pink Impression’ plus some new varieties including ‘Brisbane double’ (frilly apricot and peach), Antarctica (stunning clear white) and ‘Candy Prince’ (lilac/pink). Bit of hard yakka this morning as we picked and hauled in all the flowers for Mothers Day. Tomorrow will be a ‘shed day’ as we make up all the arrangements and bunches for the special mums, grandmas, foster mums, adopted mums, wanna be mums , dads doing the mum job, fur baby mums…… I hope they all get some flower love on the weekend. It is SO exciting watching the heritage chrysanthemums budding up! They’re going to be early this year because it’s still so warm. We completely dug out the chrysanthemums over the winter as the bed was full of very hard to remove weeds, remade it with the lasagne method including lots of delicious home made compost and replanted the sad looking cuttings into our new bed. I was resigned to having a smaller crop of chrysanthemums this autumn as the plants caught up but I’m blown away by the numbers of blooms and the height of the plants!! They are even bigger, more productive and healthier than before. Get ready for the chryssie explosion flower lovers 🩷 Also how delightfully promising do the new pink varieties look? Sometimes growing flowers in the field means I have to run out to throw shade cloth over the plants before a heatwave , get up and pick at crazy hours and content myself with truly ‘seasonal’ only crops. There’s no season extension without plastic covered hoop houses. But did you see the clouds of little birds at the beginning of this reel? I’m often surrounded by birds, 🐝 bees, lizards, bandicoots and other cute critters in my patch and the joy of knowing I’m creating a healthy environment for them brings me endless joy.
