🌞 Tips to Keep Your Reptiles Comfortable in the Heat 🌞
Summer heat can be challenging for our scaly friends! Here are some tips to help your reptiles stay safe and happy during high temperatures:
🦎 Regulate Tank Temperature
Use a thermostat to regulate the hot spot and prevent overheating. This is essential for maintaining a safe and consistent temperature.
Avoid placing tanks near windows where direct sunlight can overheat them.
💧 Hydration is Key
Always provide fresh, clean water. For pythons and other snakes, provide a large water dish that allows them to soak if they choose.
For lizards, offer a shallow water dish to prevent drowning while keeping them hydrated.
Increase humidity if needed by misting their enclosure or adding a humid hide.
(Humid hide is a hide full of damp sphagnum moss)
🌬️ Cool Spots
Create a cool area in the enclosure by offering shaded spots or hides in the cool side of the enclosure
Ice packs wrapped in a towel can help provide temporary relief on those super hot days!
🚫 Avoid Outdoor Risks
If taking your reptiles outside, ensure there’s adequate shade and never leave them unattended.
Limit outdoor time to early morning or late evening when temperatures are lower.
🐢 Know the Signs of Overheating
Watch for unusual behavior like lethargy, mouth gaping, or attempting to escape the enclosure. If you’re concerned, consult a reptile-savvy vet like the The Unusual Pet Vets
*Jag morph carpet pythons are extremely sensitive to the heat. So make sure they are kept cool! Their neurological issues will be more evident in the heat.
