A timeless tribute to land, family & culture 🎣

Judy Watson, resident artist at The Paint Factory, created tow row as a profound tribute to the Aboriginal people of the Brisbane River region. This stunning public art installation pays homage to the traditional woven nets used by the area's First Nations peoples for fishing - a practice rooted in sustenance, family and survival.

Crafted from local bark and fibre, these nets evoke the relationship between people and land, with their fragile yet strong structure symbolising the resilience of Aboriginal people.

Situated at Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art and its forecourt, tow row is more than just art—it’s a permanent reminder of the strength, beauty and histories that have shaped this land. It also acknowledges the continuous contribution of Indigenous Australians to our cultural identity.

Two years ago, we celebrated the release of You Can Go Now, a captivating documentary showcasing the life and work of one of Australia's most provocative artists, Richard Bell! 🙌

Released by Madman Films on January 26, 2023, the film offers an unflinching look at the complexities of First Nations activism, exploring the powerful intersection of art and politics. Through the lens of two Richards, the documentary highlights the dual identity of our resident artist – 'Richie', the provocateur who challenges the art world’s whiteness, and Richard who grew up in a tin shed, forged his political views on the streets of Redfern and became a dedicated activist in his community.

You Can Go Now highlights Richard Bell’s remarkable career, with his art and writings offering a perspective on 50 years of First Nations activism in Australia and its connections to global movements for change. 🌏

Printed Textiles Collection in Focus

Selected from the Cairns Art Gallery Collection, this exhibition presents textiles designed by notable Queensland Indigenous artists, including our resident artists Gordon Hookey, Vernon Ah Kee and Ryan Presley. These well-known and emerging artists were invited to explore how the imagery from their paintings, linoprints and relief-sculptures could be reimagined as floor-to-ceiling textile lengths.

Gordon Hookey’s Wallaroo 🦘
Gordon’s design features an infinite mob of kangaroos with aboriginal flag sunglasses, representing the Murri people. His vibrant, satirical approach challenges the dominant culture while celebrating Aboriginal identity with a striking visual impact.

Vernon Ah Kee’s brutalities 🔍
The ""brutalities"" design draws from Ah Kee’s experiences in Turkey, where he drew parallels between global conflict and their connections to the experiences of Indigenous Australians. His thoughtful exploration of race, history and identity is powerfully conveyed in this textile design.

Ryan Presley’s Bedburners 🛌 🔥
Ryan’s design features repeating motifs that symbolise the ongoing effects of historical trauma, highlighting the lasting impact of colonisation on Indigenous communities over time.

This exhibition highlights the creativity of Queensland Indigenous artists, transforming their work into monumental textile pieces that tell powerful stories. Don’t miss the chance to experience these exceptional designs before January 19, 2025.

Projecting new 'light' into outdated data projectors.

Resident artist Ross Manning’s Ambient Painting is an ongoing series that creatively brings new life to light projection.

In this series, Manning repurposes outdated data projector filters, mounting them at 90 degrees on canvases or walls. These salvaged filters interact with the surrounding ambient light, creating 'passive' electronic imagery as the filtered light projects colours onto the canvas. As the natural and artificial light shifts throughout the day, the work continuously evolves, offering a dynamic, ever-changing visual experience.

Since 2019, Manning has expanded this concept by incorporating larger sections of filtered glass in both gallery and architectural installations. Blue Tower (pictured) on Creek St, Brisbane is one of the latest highlights of this fascinating, dynamic series.

The Essence Of Liveability

Nestled along the banks of the Brisbane River, Yeronga is one of the most in-demand suburbs in Brisbane. A unique place that captures the very essence of liveability – and abundance of green space and parks, schools, and hospitals.

Quick access to main roads and a wide offering of public transport along with the proximity to Brisbane City makes this a highly interconnected suburb. Yeronga is also within close proximity to two major hospitals and two Universities making it a popular suburb for students and hospital workers. A suburb whose face is changing as it becomes more urban and less suburban – with more cafes, restaurants and amenities becoming available in response to locals wanting the trappings that come with a modern lifestyle.

The Paint Factory site is ready to be a part of the vibrant, urban lifestyle that is Yeronga, maintaining the sensitivity to all the things that make Yeronga liveable.

With your support, we can work together to make this vision a reality.
