Back in the “not-so-great” hair days.
AKA 1999. I was 16 and she was 35. Taken on a bus somewhere in Durban South Africa. Hard to believe that I am older now than she is in this photo. Grateful for memories and treasures like this 📸.
Not every photo has to be perfect.
Not every memory has to be from some grand occasion.
Stop waiting around for something spectacular. Time eventually reveals to us that the spectacular comes in the small nothings of the day to day rhythms in this life.

And then s**t happens …
One minute you’re prancing around in a fat suit, the next you’re drinking gin at lunch with the rest of your jobless crew. Brutal redundancies after a ruthless corporate takeover saw me, the rest of my girl gang shoot team at Youfoodz, and some (many) absolute gangster creative legends walk in to work this morning, and out at lunchtime without a job. I have had THE BEST time working with these legends, and I am shattered to say the least.
I wasn’t looking for this job- this job found me. And now it’s left me broken hearted. Big corporate takeovers from international companies mean photography gets hauled overseas in big corporate offices… leaving only shattered dreams of shiny new studios and the humbling experience of finding new income.
Hey you guys are freaking LEGENDS and I was so proud to be part of your team. Thanks for the endless belly laughs, the mad photoshop lessons, the crude food jokes, and the lifelong friendships. I can’t believe I am saying goodbye so soon - legit a day becoming permanent (the irony).

It’s been a week since I turned 39 🥳, and my 39th birthday I spent sick in bed… I’m slowly on the mend but I read this post about a week before, and I absolutely LOVED it and it resonated with me so much! And though my hair is much shorter and way more boringly pale nowadays, I did in fact have a colourful Mohawk up until a few months ago, and my hair has been pretty much every colour (except green) 👩🏼‍🎤👩🏼‍🎤!
I do in fact wear LOADS of sparkly things with statement shoulders ✨,
own plenty of checkered shorts, skirts and pants 🏁,
have about 15 pairs of triangular shaped earrings 🔻🔺,
generally kick around in bright or sparkly shoes 🛼,
and am in fact attached to a camera most days 📸 (or a disco ball!)…
Only one thing would have made this absolutely perfect : an espresso martini in the other hand! 🍸

*Dont grow up! It’s overrated!!* ✌🏼
I suddenly realised when I started shooting formals that 16 year old me was far more true to self than 30 year old me! I wore a tinsel wig to my formal, and embraced all things art, creative and unique. And then, somewhere along the line, I grew up. Conformed to being a “responsible adult”, stable job, bought a house, had a baby… and somehow lost the essence of myself. Still bubbly me, without the sparkle, I was just the same as everyone else.
And then my mum died. 💔
Losing someone so close really makes you think things through. I always say that dying teaches you more about life than living ever could. I realised then that we don’t live to work, we work to live, so I quit my 9-5 and threw myself into my passion - photography. I also stopped caring about conformity, I chopped all my hair off and started prioritising things that were important to me. I didn’t (and don’t) care what people thought because I am being true to myself.
So here’s a lesson to all you folk out there:
Don’t grow up. It’s SO overrated and robs you of yourself.
Be you. Be true. Live AND love your life and those around you.
Ps. Hardly anyone recognised me at my formal 🤣 and I still can’t believe I wore a wig 🤣🤣 God bless that crazy sparkly girl inside! ✨

Last night [Australia time] my dearest and beloved granny was reunited with her eldest daughter [my mum] in heaven. After living almost 8 years suffering the heartache of a mother who lost a child, I can only imagine the celebration those two are having right now. On earth she leaves behind a trail of shattered hearts including those of her dear husband, her children and grandchildren, her brother, and an expanse of lifelong friends and family across many continents. We will never forget her cheeky smile - and I’m grateful I got to capture it on my last visit with her 4 years ago. Having a very young single mum for the first 5 years of my life, my granny was like my other mum - losing her suddenly is devastating. Another strong woman in my life, gone too soon. This only inspires me to be stronger.

Hug your people today. Don’t fight. Forgive. Love. Treasure. Be present. Don’t put work above people. Settle indifferences. Make peace. Be passionate. Live fully.
