Peter Scudamore-Smith MW reporting; long time traveller in Tuscany; a good time to check in how the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino are travelling; the case being a single vineyard under the Frescobaldi stable; Ripe al Convento, young at 17 years planted; undoubtedly using the recent clones of sangiovese grosso; this one a Riserva in that the winemaking team considered it outstanding; quite restrained on nose save the stamp of the variety; sour cherry; dried herbs and little flowers with a fragrance to say it’s fresh in bottle, long cork, palate of linear tannin that stops to give the stamp of this grape as mid-weight; savoury; drying and needing the glazed scallops to tease out the fruit of this grape; a deep balsamic note and dry bitterness to enjoy. Drink for 20-50 years; keep one for grandchildren and their legacy.

Jack Stuart’s Blume Restaurant in Boonah; early winter menu; beetroot, cheese puffs, sprouts, mackerel, lamb shoulder, cabbage, spiced cake; grenache. Excellent lunch in a country town very much akin to my France experiences of Michelin starred chefs residing in humble environments, less costly to operate; restricted in numbers, high on Quality, respectful of local; at Blume a listing of Adrian Tobin’s Chardonnay on Sundown Road, Ballandean.

Tasting at Wills Domain in Yallingup; with CEO Darren Haunold on Uncorked & Cultivated WA Wine & Food Tour in Margaret River with Peter Scudamore-Smith as personal host. Tasted: Bubbles, curiously following French wording in an Aussie environment, NV Cuvee d’Elevage from chardonnay and pinot (ex-Manjinup) from 2020 base; 23 Mystic Spring Semillon Sauvignon Blanc (75/25); 23 Mystic Spring Sauvignon Blanc; 23 Eightfold Chardonnay; 23 Paladin Hill Chardonnay; 22 Mystic Spring Rose from shiraz; 20 Eightfold Shiraz; 19 Paladin Hill Shiraz; 22 Eightfold Cabernet Sauvignon and 18 Matrix (72/11/11/6, cabernet, franc, malbec, verdot). Found a cellar door on a warm sunny Margaret River morning with vibe and beat, apart from super wine to taste; 18/20 restaurant sets the excellence.

An outstanding tasting given at 10 Harris Road, Caversham in the Swan Valley, delves into the local vine planting history with wines from vines planted as bush vines in 1955; you can rest assured the 2021 wines made exhibit their sense of place, as well as their deep flavours. Day 8 exploring the origins of the Western Australian wine industry in the Swan Valley; Peter Scudamore-Smith MW takes guests to Nikola Estate; home of wines made from some of the States oldest vines, and vineyards; the greater volume being white- chenin blanc and verdelho. Tasting 21 Chenin Blanc bubbles, 23 Chenin Blanc, 22 Chenin Blanc (made by old practices), 22 Verdelho, unwooded, 23 Geographe Chardonnay, 23 Geographe Arneis, 23 Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre (various regions) 22 Surrealist ( Montepulciano +), 21 Modernist (Tempranillo + ). A great combination of new and old thinking, allowance for climate change and careful preservation of what originally was a Houghton jewell.

Day 7; and last day visiting the vast, and Australia’s largest GI wine region, Great Southern, at Plantagenet Winery owned by Tom Wisdom with winemaker Mike Garland presiding; tasting premium Wyjup varieties (first nation meaning is small place); grown here since original establishment in 1968 in an apple packing shed. 22 and 20 rieslings exhibit the sheer class of the grape here, no hint of age happening, sublime condition, still floral, 21 chardonnay made to be delicious, with heavy hands on the extras; 21 pinot is spacious in character; has roundness, 19 shiraz is another world, up there; world trend setter, aromatic and precise flavour intensity overcame this taster; 18 shiraz is an ode to founder Tony Smith, now deceased, three excellent cabernets; 18 is precise, spirited in aromatic intensity; juicy, medium bodied; the flag wine to distributor Lionel Sampson is the more discreetly-barrel-aged 18; firmer, riper blackcurrants; and for an age demonstration; 15 Aquitane; first class cabernet on the mellowing end of fruit decrease. Excellent visit and tastings.

Day 6 lunch in Denmark at the shared space of Forest Hill winery (vineyard 40 km away in Mount Barker), first planted in the area as an experiment in 1965; and Pepper + Salt restaurant owner Silas Masih, food Mediterranean influenced. Peter Scudamore-Smith MW’s selection was riesling, Block 2 from 2023, and Block 1 from 2011; seminal riesling, colour pale, lime juice evident, with the big fat marron; following is lamb shank paired with two young reds to soak up the exotic spice; Mount Barker grown 22 shiraz and crunchy 22 Malbec. Great visit to Pepper + Salt followed by a walk in Valley of the Giants.

Day 5 lunch at Duke’s Vineyard in the Porongurups; an extensive tasting initiated by Peter Scudamore-Smith MW on his Uncorked & Cultivated WA Wine & Food Tour of wine regions post vintage. A food truck effort by Margaret River chef Camilla Nielsen (once domiciled in Brisbane) with cheese biscuits, the fattest poached b***d chicken leg I’d ever seen, and chocolate torte; ingredients across the meal local/ seasonal. Two smashing rieslings point to the elegance and control of the acidity in the area; green lime fruit no doubt directed from granitic soils from rocks 1.2 billion years-old. The 22 chardonnay pays homage to northern Margaret River in a range of high point flavours we call young complexity. Shiraz is pretty much a staple here; it’s on the mute scale so it shows up soft, not easy, just spiced and peppered, super fruit. Two shiraz reserves, 21 and 20, the older bolder and oaky in debut to the season; the 21 whole bunch that takes on more aromatic and meat character, dense flavours that mix with poultry, not dominate; and makes shiraz gorgeous rather than super serious or such an easy repeat drink. Two 21 cabernets, the latter from original vines, as they are the latest to ripen, here, very medium bodied; last to taste; assume blackcurrants in volume, herbs and grasses, to***co and leaf. A great day at the 12 ha property planted 25 years ago to riesling, shiraz and cabernet. And thanks to Camilla, and feathers from magpies.

Day 5 on Uncorked & Cultivated WA Wine & Food Tour in the Porongurups at founder Angelo Diletti’s Castle Rock Estate, a specialist in riesling and pinot noirs; many types are made here. 23 Estate Riesling, pure free run grape juice, the purest of lemon zest fruit, and the most delicate riesling style in the entire Great Southern GI; 23 Skywalk is riesling pressings, the chewy part from the press, fuller weight and understandably drying; 23 A &W (Angelo & Wendy-owners), is whole bunch pressed riesling grapes for extra elegance; then 22 Diletti is the best juice fermented in 500 litre casks; decidedly fuller wine; all 11.8-12.0% alcohol. The pinots; 23 Estate is regulation crushed grapes made with 5% whole bunches added, cold soaked 10 days; the 23 A&W is 30% whole bunch, and 23 Diletti is 90% whole, which requires foot stamping to create juice; wines increase in depth and complexity in ascendance; creative taste; good weight pinots with a high varietal element; thanks to Angelo. House sparkling is 19 Della, 50/50 chardonnay and pinot noir; pure elegance and minerality, nothing out there, in harmony with its cool climate, primary flavours and 5 years of yeast.

Uncorked & Cultivated WA Wine & Food Tour arrives in Albany, Great Southern region, a very large GI; Peter Scudamore-Smith MW takes 14 travellers to visit Robert Wignall nearby. The estate was planted by veterinarian Bill Wignall in 1982; to sauvignon, chardonnay, pinot noir, shiraz and cabernet; the latter being a failure. This is chardonnay and pinot noir country; cold maritime, just as cold as Burgundy Rob recalls. Tasting: 23 tropical s blanc; 22 chardonnay without oak; lean and citrus-fuelled, 23 premium chardonnay; yet-to-release; butter and oak yumminess; 25/25/50% new/1yo/old barrels gives roundness before extreme crispness; 20 is maturing; mix of fruit and wheaten character; 22 pinot is crazy in exotic herbs, love it, drink it now; 20 is more feral from age, delicious to mouth; 22 cabernet merlot will be popular wherever drunk; propped up by outrageous fruit eminence; 21 shiraz from off- property is just great; that spice, gentle tongue caress, progressive realisation that light body shiraz is good; cool region naturally where the genes tame this grape to stay soft; no rabble. A fabulous morning’s tasting almost within view of the Southern Ocean.
