Synopsis

Mrs. Stancliffe's Rose Cottage Bed & Breakfast has been successful for many years. Her Guests (nearly all women) return year after year. Her next door neighbour, the elderly, silver-tongued, Bud "Bud the Stud" Davis believes they come to spend time with him in romantic liaisons. The prim and proper Mrs. Stancliffe steadfastly denies this, but really doesn't do anything to prevent it. She reluctantly accepts the fact that "Bud the Stud" is, in fact, good for business. Her other neighbour and would-be suitor Henry Mitchell is a retired chemist who has developed a blue pill called "Venusia," after Venus the goddess of love, to increase the libido of menopausal women. The pill has not been tested.

Character Personae

Bud Davis Age 70+. Weak and frail looking with ‘one foot in the grave’ is known as ‘Bud the Stud’ among many of the female guests at Rose Cottage. He enchants all with his silver tongue and sexual prowess. Elderly, somewhat infirm, chauvinistic, brazen but likeable.

Mrs Stancliffe Age 65+. The owner of Rose Cottage Bed and Breakfast. A severe woman, precise in speech and punctuality. Efficient and competent. Sensible, practical, business-like, menopausal hiding radiance and sensuousness.

Henry Mitchell Age 60+. A retired pharmaceutical research chemist and Mrs Stancliffe’s Gentleman Caller and has proposed to her every afternoon for 20 years. The ‘perfect gentleman’ who shows respect for all women. Gentle, caring, thoughtful and loveable.

Victoria Ambrose Age 50+. A renowned author of ‘steamy romantic’ novels. She seeks what she writes for her life but cannot find it. Serious, intelligent, menopausal, yearning for love.

Hillary Hudson Age 50+. Well educated, articulate and sophisticated in manner and dress. A former co-worker and friend of Henry. ‘A touch of class, intelligent and menopausal.

Charmaine Beauregard Age 50+. Hails from Sydney, North Shore. Her life has been and is run by her overactive libido. Voluptuous, out- going, gushing, demonstrative, menopausal.

Whether you're a seasoned performer or new to the stage, this is your chance to be part of a bold and entertaining production that will challenge, entertain, and delight.

Last year, Buderim Lions and 1RAA Concert Band held a concert with monies raised going towards mates4mates su***de prevention programs. The event exceeded everyone's expectations with attendees having a great time while raising $2,000 for this wonderful and worthwhile cause. At a recent dinner meeting, we had Jack Hallings from mates4mates who spoke about their programs supporting current and ex-serving Defence Force members and families through mental health and physical rehabilitation services, skills-based recovery programs, and social connection activities. Lions is really keen to continue our support and together with the ADF we'll be holding our next concert on 11 October at the BMSS hall. Tickets will be on sale from early September either directly on our website or via the (BWMCA) Old Post Office.

Proud to support Buderim Library with grant funding for its first brochure update in 13 years! 📘👏

For years, volunteers have patched over old info and updated it by hand to make every copy count — true community spirit.

Now, they have a fresh new brochure that honours 138 years of service since James Lindsay opened the library from his veranda in 1887.

Drop by the library (or my office) to see it!

~ In Memoriam Ian Austin ~

It is with deep sadness and heartfelt respect that we acknowledge the recent passing of Ian Austin — a beloved Sunshine Coast playwright, theatre reviewer, and devoted patron of the arts.

Ian was a prolific writer whose sharp wit, keen insight, and unwavering passion for the stage enriched the cultural fabric of our region. Many will remember his articulate and thoughtful theatre reviews in the Sunshine Coast Daily, which championed local productions and celebrated the talent within our community.

Ian was a great supporter and friend of BATS Theatre Company Inc., generously donating his collection of plays to us some years ago — a gift that continues to inspire and entertain. His support, encouragement, and creative spirit has been a cornerstone of our theatre family.

His play Elizabeth the Third, a brilliantly crafted farce, was recently selected by Sommer Darsana as her directorial debut for our One Act Plays production this winter. Sommer specifically sought to celebrate a local playwright for her first production, and after reading Ian’s entire collection — and having the best time doing so — she was drawn to this piece in particular.

Ian originally wrote Elizabeth the Third for the Peregian Theatre Club (first performed in 1976), a predominantly female troupe whose passion for performance often went unrepresented in traditional plays. Ian crafted this piece especially for them — a comedic gem that spotlighted and celebrated the women of Sunshine Coast theatre. The timing is as poignant as it is uncanny — Ian passed shortly after receiving the news that his play would return to the spotlight.

Ian’s words, wit, and warmth will be missed, but his legacy lives on in the laughter and connection he brought to so many.

Rest In Peace, Ian Austin.
Thank you for the stories, the support, and the stagecraft.
