Poppy and Fern

Poppy and Fern Poppy & Fern is a sustainable flower farm and florist cultivating the slow flower movement at The Farm in Byron Bay.

The call of the flowers has always been strong for our Jess, aka Poppy. From crafting floral gifts as a young girl, to work experience in a florist as a teenager, the path was always clear. Over the last 12 years, Jess soaked in the wisdom of leaders in floristry, permaculture and horticulture. She is a woman who grows and creates with incredible heart, soul and integrity. Along the way, her love

for fresh dahlias awakened a vision of owning her own flower farm where she could design with locally grown blooms. Sculpting breathtaking botanical designs was just the beginning. Now, she’s living the dream planting, growing, and designing amongst a community of like-minds on The Farm in the Byron Bay hinterland. For Jess, life is best when she’s connected to the land. It’s why she wakes up every day to walk the Field, breathing the same air as our flowers, and stopping to watch them germinate. You might see her kneeling to the earth to scoop up the rich volcanic Byron Bay soil and letting it run between her fingers. If you ask her, she’ll tell you there’s magic in that soil.

Week 5 of 52 🌿

How is it Friday again? The weeks are flying by, and we’re deep in the rhythm and flow of the season! This week has been a mix of early mornings, humid days, meeting new friends and plenty of flowers.

We kicked off our first week of Flower School, welcoming a new group of students and diving into the foundations of sustainable floristry. Out in the field, we’ve been cleaning up damaged dahlias to keep the patch thriving for the weeks ahead.

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we’re in full prep mode, washing vases, cutting paper, writing cards and getting everything ready for one of the biggest flower days of the year! On top of that, we’ve been creating beautiful wedding and event flowers, bringing floral visions to life for our couples.

A full, busy, and flower-filled week—just how we like it! Now to try and rest over the weekend before we enter the Valentine’s Day vortex 🤪

Week 4 of 52

This week flew by! We kicked off taking Valentine’s Day orders (get yours in ASAP so you don’t miss out!) and completely sold out our upcoming floral design course, thank you for the love! We also sent out our first email newsletter of the year, so if you want to stay in the loop, make sure you’re subscribed.

On the farm, we made progress on our Chrysanthemum beds (just a few more cuttings to go!) and planted out zinnias, marigolds, celosia, and cosmos. We also harvested our first few Floret celosia and dahlias and are so excited to watch these beauties change and grow over the season!

We even got to meet some adorable new babies on (easily one of the week’s highlights!). Now crossing our fingers for some weekend rain to settle in all the new plantings after a stretch of hot days.

And, as always, we sent out fresh blooms into the community our favorite part of every week!

Week 3 of 52

What a roller coaster ! This week reminded us how much we are at the mercy of Mother Nature. A heatwave rolled in, followed by a freak morning storm with wild winds, intense lightning, and then another couple of scorching day. We lost some precious dahlias, cosmos, and the top of the greenhouse took a hit. It wasn’t the easiest week, but we stayed grounded, focusing on what we could control. Between the chaos, we kept up with weeding (always!), prepping beds, and getting everything ready for our chrysanthemum cuttings, though a little behind schedule, we’re optimistic they’ll be in the ground next week.

On the upside, we heard some very exciting news about things coming up on this year, stay tuned for updates! We’re feeling so grateful every single day to work with beautiful flowers in such an incredible location, surrounded by epic humans doing truly epic stuff.

We also had the joy of creating florals for gorgeous events at and sent out so many bouquets into the community this week. Despite the challenges, moments like these remind us how lucky we are to do what we love!

Week 2 of 52 | 2025 🐞

This week was all about sharing the beauty of our blooms! So many deliveries heading out, From birthdays to new babies to just because moments. Thank you for continuing to choose locally grown blooms to brighten your days and send messages to your loved ones.

We flowered a beautiful event and had the best time chatting all things flowers with our visitors in store.

Out in the field, we kept the momentum from last week going strong, planting the last of our summer plugs (paper daisies, matricaria, celosia, cosmos and amaranth) and prepping for spring by laying black plastic to solarize grass for our upcoming ranunculus beds.

And the most magical moment? Releasing more ladybugs into the field to help us naturally fight off pests. Watching them settle into the flowers felt like pure magic. Here’s to growing sustainably and sharing the beauty with you all!

What was your favorite moment from this week? Let us know below!

Let’s talk about one of our favorite blooms: Rudbeckia!

There’s so much to love about these cheerful flowers. With their vibrant colors, unique faces, and sturdy presence, rudbeckias are a standout in any garden or bouquet. They come in so many varieties ranging from warm golden yellows to deep mahogany tones, each with its own personality and charm.

And here’s the thing about those backwards petals, they’re supposed to be like that! That distinctive shape is part of their natural beauty and one of the things that makes them so unique. So if you’ve ever thought your rudbeckias looked a little unusual or maybe even old, rest assured they’re doing exactly what they’re meant to do.

Plus, they’re not just beautiful, they are hardy, long lasting, and a pollinator favorite, making them a win for your garden and your designs.

Who else loves rudbeckia as much as we do? Drop your favorite varieties below!

Week 1 of 52 | 2025 🌸

The first week of the year is done, and what a whirlwind it’s been! With our team back together, we’ve dived headfirst into all the things because after the pre-Christmas rush, three weeks away from the field felt like forever and it was out of control!

This week has been a blur of stunning sunrises, endless weeding, and prepping beds for planting (if you’re not planning for autumn/winter yet, take this as your sign!). We’ve been sowing seeds like mad, tackling low water pressure during a Byron-wide heatwave (fun times, right?), and soaking up moments with new furry and feathered friends.

In the fields, it’s all about the summer blooms right now harvesting dahlias, cosmos, gomphrena, scabiosa, echinacea, marigolds, zinnias, and the dreamiest herbs and botanicals.

Meanwhile, the shop’s been buzzing with visitors, the first deliveries of the year (yes, we deliver Mon-Fri!), and kicking things off with our first wedding for 2025.

It’s been big, it’s been hot, it’s been exhausting but our hearts are full, and we’re so happy to be back in the swing. Let’s go, 2025!
