The Helmeted Friarbird, curious and forthcoming but not as aggressive as some of the other species of friarbirds. I often see them in pairs, squawking at each other but this one always visits me alone. Among the Drongos, Yellow Spotted Honeyeaters, Peewees and White Throated Honeyeaters, these are my regular visitors as we're winding up the Winter months in Cairns.

Australasian Darter perched with a peculiar backward twisted foot amidst a lotus lily pond in full bloom. I have never been to the Tyto Wetlands in Ingham before. Stunning grounds, I wish I had longer there.... only stopped for the loo but then grabbed my camera when I saw endless turtles on rocks, Kingfishers and Darters everywhere. The colours were amazing!

Rarely have I been able to photograph one of these Butcher Birds with such close detail that it shows the mites/parasite...

Rarely have I been able to photograph one of these Butcher Birds with such close detail that it shows the mites/parasites in the feathers. If you look keenly, you'll see some tick or mite half embedded in its eyebrow. This naughty Butcherbird was captured perched, stealthily in the bushes looking for small wildlife, geckos or bird nests, and the resident Honeyeaters were going nuts. When I came out to investigate the racket, I saw nothing but then the culprit revealed it's deep in undercover.

Visit and bath for this White Throated Honey Eater today... they are so funny to watch. I think they amuse even themselv...
