THE CAIRNS SHOWGROUNDS: PRESERVING OUR COMMUNITY'S HISTORY

There has been recent discussion about the future of the Cairns Showgrounds, including suggestions that the site could be repurposed for residential development. We want to take a moment to acknowledge these conversations and share our perspective.

The Cairns Showgrounds holds deep historical and cultural significance for our community. For generations, it has been home to the Cairns Show and a wide range of events, including family gatherings, community celebrations, music festivals, expos, and more. While we recognize the ongoing challenges of maintaining the grounds—especially with rising costs—we remain committed to preserving this space for future generations.

We also acknowledge the housing challenges in our region and the need for thoughtful solutions. However, we strongly believe that there are alternative locations for development that would not come at the cost of losing such an important community asset.

To those wondering about camping—our lease agreement with the Council does not permit it.

We deeply appreciate the ongoing support from our community. Your passion for protecting this space reinforces how important it is to so many people. As discussions continue, we remain dedicated to ensuring that the Cairns Showgrounds remains a place for connection, celebration, and history.

King tides are here, Cairns! 🌊 Expect higher-than-usual tides from today, Friday 28 February, through to Monday 3 March, with the peak tide of 3.41m at 9:30am today.

🚗 Saltwater and cars don’t mix! Avoid parking in low-lying areas.
🚧 Road closures are there for a reason—follow the signs.
🌧️ Heavy rain could make flooding worse, so stay alert!
Flood-prone streets in Portsmith, Cairns City, and Cairns North may be impacted.
