As a celebrant, I am required by law to ensure that both parties are participating in marriage with their full consent. This requires a bit of discussion and examination of the situation and circumstances behind the marriage. I have been very fortunate to have had all of my couples willing participants in the ceremony however all celebrants have to keep an eye out for those who do not give their consent willingly. The situation this poor girl found herself in is both unfortunate and devastating. I am so glad that Australia provides such a positive focus for people wanting to marry and also an option for escape for those who are being forced.

What an awful thing to happen! Consent is an essential part of any marriage. It is so important that the Attorney General's Department recently changed the law to get celebrants to meet individually with each party to the marriage to ensure that there is genuine consent.

A woman has collapsed in court after a Shepparton mother was jailed for at least a year for forcing her daughter to marry a man who murdered her six weeks later.

Although I no longer have a traditional workplace, inclusion and flexible working are areas I've always felt very strongly about. It has always confused me that there is a reticence to allowing half the population to participate in everything. It gets worse when other bigotry affects society as well. I hope everyone can celebrate today and let them be reminded that women are a vital and essential part of our community, society and lives.

This article backs what I have been saying to young couples for years. You don't need a huge wedding with all the trimmings to have a ceremony that is meaningful and lets you really enjoy it. You can have a ceremony that is relatively inexpensive and far more enjoyable if you just explore options. Talk to me if you want to explore ideas together!

When my dad got sick I decided that if I was ever going to get married, I wanted him to be there so we went from organising a 130-guest wedding with all the trimmings to a tiny courtyard wedding for 11 people.
