Street Chess is a weekly chess event held in the centre of Canberra. Join us under the trees outside King O'Malley's in City Walk.

Street Chess is held every Saturday from 11am to 3pm.

23 players played today’s Street Chess which is a little lower than normal for this time of year. The event did have some newcomers and every player managed at least one win.

Street Chess Berlin style. If you are ever visiting Berlin, check out Stranger Chess. They are a street chess gathering that meets 7 nights a week from 7pm. I paid a visit this evening and had a couple of fun and challenging games of chess. Non competitive but they do use chess clocks.

Street Chess (31/8/2024) - The Oskar Hellmann Memorial.

38 players turned up yesterday for the second annual Oskar Hellmann Memorial to honour the Street Chess legend. Oskar played chess in Canberra for decades and was playing regularly in 2023 when he passed away.

I would like to thank the sponsors: King O’Malleys, Street Chess, Shaun Press, Harry Johnson and Canberra Chess Club for their support.

Hi everyone,

Just a heads up that this Saturday’s Street Chess, 31 August 2024 will be the Oskar Hellmann Memorial. For those who didn’t know Oskar he was a long term player at Street and was the grandfather figure of our group.

Oskar passed away a little over a year ago and with Father’s Day on Sunday it’s Street Chess’ way to say thanks.

Extra prizes will be decided on the day but there will be a prize for best Dad.

Please try and be a little early this week to help.
