A promise of hope! This spectacular double rainbow just lit up the sky with color above the dahlia patch after a sun shower! Wow!

Although I haven't posted an update for some time (opps!), it has been busy behind the scenes over the past few months!
Winter and early spring jobs included:
- digging, dividing, sorting, and storing all the dahlia tubers
- preparation of the garden beds and soil for the next season (adding soil and fertilizers)
- updating the gravel pathways
- maintenance and upgrades in the dahlia patch, including adding new garden decor and lights
And now - it's time to plant the tubers! Planting started today in my patch (November 1)! The tubers in storage have been starting to sprout already, so are very ready to plant out and watch them grow! 🌱
I've also created a Dahlia Specialty Calendar for 2024 (email me if you'd like to order one!), and starting to catalogue my dahlias in a new way using online software!

In between my hours of study at my desk, I decided to go outside and this time make a flat-lay of about 60-70 different dahlia varieties that are flowering so far (of the 240 or so that are growing) .... 💜💛🩷

While many dahlia growers already have flowers, I'm excited mine are just finally taking off! 🌿 Still a few to poke through the soil though. I check them and they are there just below the soil 🌱😊

This time last year we already had amazing colors! 🌸🌺
Gardens are running late this year, nevertheless they are planted 🌱
We just need warmer weather. Today we had 10°C weather, over 45 mm of rain, and there is snow on Mt Hotham! Wrong weather for this season!

Just got finished planting all my tubers and I have a few cuttings on the heat mat too 🌱
- Approx 240 tubers planted in my raised beds
- 160 different dahlia cultivars
I had a bit of a cull from last year, replacing cultivars I didn't like or that did not have proper form with cultivars from well-known and shown prefixes.

This beautiful Coorabell Zoe dahlia photo was selected as the winning photograph in an online Coorabell dahlia photo competition in the Facebook group Dahlia Growers Australia, chosen by the Coorabell man himself Steven Wedd 🌸
Cultivar prize won: Coorabell Amanda, Coorabell Zoe, Coorabell Seedling 519 all of which are now planted in my garden!

Hi - I'm Rachel! Welcome to my new page!
With the huge interest in dahlia gardening the past two years, and since I don't really use Instragram, I decided it was time to start a page where you can follow my garden adventures this summer and in the future! ☀️
I am just a home-gardener (among other things!), not a commercial flower farm or florist for that matter. I've always loved growing things. My father was a professional landscape gardener in his working life, and it's highly likely that is where my green thumb comes from .... 🌱 As kids, we grew flowers and each had a veggie patch, where we grew all kinds of edible things and had competitions between each other who could grow the biggest and best vegetables!
My professional career is that of a Registered Nurse, specialising in Emergency Nursing next year after thirteen years in the profession. But I've always said, if I wasn't a nurse, I would be a florist or interior decorator. There's definitely a creative and decorative side to me 💐 I enjoy giving away bouquets for others to enjoy, and I love delivering buckets full of flowers to the aged care homes for the elderly to enjoy.
I have experimented with dahlia floral arrangements and dahlia art (Dahli-Art as I call it) and I'm excited to see what I might create this summer!
Our 104-acre country property 'Mountain View Rise' is situated in the scenic hills of East Gippsland, Victoria. We have so much greenery around us once again, having just escaped the fires that devestated our community in 2019.
I had a late start to planting my dahlia garden because of an injury I sustained at the end of October (badly broke my left leg - tibia and fibula, which required surgical intervention: rods, plates and screws, and a lengthy recovery phase), but I am finally getting my dahlia tubers in the ground the first week of December - albeit about four weeks later than I would have liked to got them into the ground.
I'm confident they'll get to growing nicely pretty soon!

A magical photo taken last summer, early January 2022 over our raised garden beds. Summer is my favorite time of the year for so many reasons, warm outdoor weather, gardens and flowers, and some of the best sunsets just to name a few.
