In November 2017, at The Belvedere Hotel in Woody Point, I was enjoying Christmas drinks with two mates that I'd met whilst attending at a local networking group and our Chamber of Commerce earlier in the year.

Leanne Blaney and I were both in our first year of running businesses full-time, and had been looking for a business group that offered a different type of education.

As newbies in business, we had a sneaking suspicion that we didn't know anything about running our businesses! We were constantly asking others at networking if they knew of other events that shared information for us to learn about the "how to" side of business.

With an end of year celebratory drink, we decided to set up the solution we'd been looking for. And the first Ocean Network event was held on Tuesday 13th February.

For me - not much has changed in that I still feel I don't know how to run my business! The difference is that I have been motivated, inspired, educated, de-stressed, gained new friends, started collaborations, shared the highs and lows of running a business and laughed a LOT in the last seven years of the Ocean Network.

Supported by The Bel from the very beginning, we're about to start our eighth year of twice monthly mornings with business owners from the City of Moreton Bay and Brisbane.

And I'm looking forward to enjoying my morning coffees out with some humans who are the very best in business!

Special thanks for all your support Brad, Chris, Mitch & Andy from

Today is International Education Day πŸ‘©β€πŸŽ“πŸ§‘β€πŸŽ“πŸ‘¨β€πŸŽ“ and we'd love to give a shout out to all our education and educator friends, of which there are soooo many!

Working with state schools around Moreton Bay and Brisbane City always bring project highlights, fun and lots of learning.

Fun fact about Kirsty, is that before she worked full-time in Rugby League, she worked in a local high school as the Library Tech/TA πŸ“šπŸ“–πŸ“” That job also included stints in all other Teacher Aide rolls including the Science Lab Technician πŸ§ͺβš—οΈπŸ”¬ and is how she ended up working in Rugby League, and lead to her becoming a Rugby League Coach!

These days, we're more about working on specialty signage projects and large format print campaigns for schools instead. Here's some of our special moments working with our education mates over the last eight or so years....

It's so damn hot today! So we're going to turn on the A/C and check in on our client's TikTok accounts to see what damage US algorithms are doing today.

Don't bother calling us. We'll be super busy.

Watching 74 Gossip Gowns videos, some chick waffling on about not needing a massage, our favourite fashion brands and watching Christian Hull watch other people do weird sh*t and laugh at his laugh.

We're busy.

Happy New Year and P.S. up yours! πŸŽ†πŸŽ‡

This is what it always feels like we get at the beginning of the year, from our ever evolving social media platforms.

The biggest change affecting most of our immediate connections is the Instagram post size change πŸ“²πŸ˜

We aren't too sure why everyone is cracking up though 😳 yes we said that! We've been talking about this for a LOOOOOOOONNNGG time and have transferred several clients' social media designs across to this size many moons ago. Like maybe as many moons as two years worth!

When this new size came online all those moons ago, we discussed the pros and cons of the change to your presentation. The major positive out of this change, is that your images have more hang time on screen for your scrolling fans. You can fit more image, in your image!

πŸ—’ That equals fitting more text - or better yet - more nicely spaced text onto a design with text. Yay for the reader, and the designer!

πŸ’‘ Now for all our Canva Queens out there, this change will be hardly a challenge at all. Simply go into all your batched designs, go to the RESIZE button and copy and resize to the Instagram Post and continue on with life as it was (if you haven't already).

πŸ–₯ If you don't use Canva, the new design size is 1080px x 1350px. Change whatever kind of art board you have now to this and continue as you were.

Once you've got all of this under control and you've gotten used to yet another social media change you hadn't noticed rolling out (for the last couple of years), you'll be fine and the new year really will return to being happy one!

The best way to remember a hectic year is to review the photo collection.

It's hard to believe so many projects, events, clients, conversations and frivolity could have been packed into just one year.

We tried to take the one photo per month challenge. But 2024 has been huge and so that was decidedly a stupid challenge for us.

In an effort to try to keep it down and not posting a thousand image photo album to get bored of, here's some of our favourite moments from across the year.....

Travel has definitely been an overarching theme for our team and closest collaborators because it's jam-packed with different destinations around the country.

Until next year, stay safe out there. Happy New Year to all those near and dear and who support us and to those we support!

What an epic day to end our week on! A day of travelling from North Lakes to Jamboree Heights to St Lucia to Albion to Kedron and home to Moreton Bay.

The power team of Pete, Shirlee, Kylie & Kirsty has seen hours of content captured on film to showcase first class renovations around Brisbane.

We've styled, cleaned, snacked & sweated across the big city with so many wonderful recent projects to present to public.

Epic!

We've spent a lot of time reviewing professional photography files this week, including - most excitingly - the freshest lot of branded photography for ourselves πŸ˜†

Getting the photos back is always the most exciting part of a shoot.

Immediately followed by the pressure of how to use them.

With choice comes confusion at times. But having choice is far better than twiddling your fingers, because you don't have any resources at your finger tips, to help you create or curate content with.

This is the beauty of having a strong brief for your photography and understanding what needs you have for certain shots to be captured.

If you're new to professional photography, here's five tips to make sure there are branded images within your shot list for moments like this:
☝️ Have items with your branding on them. Like our office coffee cups in this photo, branded pens, business cards, brochures, uniforms, training materials, notepads - anything at all.

✌️Don't merchandise already? It's easy to get a coffee mug printed & a T-shirt from small business folks in your area. One off items that you will personally use are worth the investment to help you insert your visual brand to content.

πŸ–– Be consistent with your colours you wear. Think about what you wore in previous photography, & let that factor into future decisions. Don't wear the same items from the last batch of photography, so you have a broader collection of photos overall.

🀚 If personal branding photography is the project, having your "colours done" in advance equips you with insights & styles that suit you & your look.

πŸ– When choosing a location, ask these questions: does the environment reflect what you do, how you do it, what you sell, who you are? If you can't say yes to any of these, think about the type of location that does. As an example, these last photos were taken at a hotel. We already host a lot of events at that hotel, it has spaces reflecting our client's work spaces that we work in, & the equipment & provisions the location provided are important items for how we complete our client projects too.
