Modern sport is criticised as being too much about money. Season ticket prices always going up, TV subscriptions going up, merchandise on the up, food and drinks at stadiums too expensive and so on.

So it is very pleasing to read that Greek Super League Club Panathinaikos FC -ΘΥΡΑ 13. has decided to pay the entire amount of their recently deceased player George Baldock's three-year contract to his wife to help raise their 1-year-old child.

The Club is also planning a charity match for the Baldock family in 2025 to bring in additional income for George's wife and child.

Well done to the owner and management of Panathinaikos for such a great gesture.

Photo of cousins Paul and David Fantasia, both from Adelaide and travelling in May to see AC Milan v AS Roma in Perth.

Paul, 37, Milanista and President of Milan Club Adelaide, and David, 36, Romanista and die hard Totti fan, never miss watching their teams play, with plenty of banter exchanged over the years.

Both attended Rostrevor College and play football together with SA Collegiate side, Rostrevor Old Collegians Soccer Club in Adelaide's Eastern Suburbs. They have trained wearing their favourite Serie A club colours for the past 20 years.

Paul and David are also travelling with their family and friends to Perth, some visiting Western Australia for the first time, and can't wait to see what the state has to offer.

Former South Melbourne FC star David Clarkson DipSM shared his experience when he had a stint in Asia with South China FC in Hong Kong when they faced AC Milan on their Asian tour.

That AC Milan team contained world class players such as Ruud Gullit, Marco Van Basten, Marcel Desailly, Franco Baresi to name a few!

David has kindly shared some photos of his game v AC Milan on that tour and proudly boasts he swapped his shirt with Franco Baresi.

We a little support and luck, we may have a 3rd on the way soon with a young gun called Giancarlo Artho climbing the ranks.
Giancarlo has been selected for the prestigious 2023 Ferrari Driver Academy Asia Pacific/Oceania Selection Program being held in Malaysia.

To climb through the ranks into F1 it takes a load of talent but substantial financial support.

We welcome Nick Galatas one of the key figures in the National Second Division creation as speaker at Money In Sport 2023 on 6 July. As Football Australia announced 26 Clubs last week left vying for positions in the NSD, we will hear from Nick on what the NSD will add to the Australian football landscape.

Nick Galatas is a leading Melbourne lawyer with over three decades of experience, primarily as a partner in a private practice firm. Nick has recently established Galatas Advisory, a legal and regulatory consultancy, focusing on sports and regulatory law, drawing on his extensive experience in the law and sports governance.

Dovetailing with his professional life, Nick served on the Board of South Melbourne FC from 2007 to 2019, chairing the board from 2008. In that role, Nick helped steer SMFC to its rebirth as a modern Australian Football Club, ready to again take its place on the national stage as a founding member of the new National Second Tier. Nick also led the negotiations with the Victorian State Government culminating in the Memorandum of Understanding with the government, the State Sport Centres Trust, Parks Victoria and others which secured the club’s future at the redeveloped Lakeside Stadium at Albert Part, Melbourne.

Nick is also a founder of the Association of Australian Football Clubs (AAFC). Established in 2017 to represent National Premier Leagues (NPL) clubs, Nick drew its Constitution and initially served as honorary legal counsel, representing AAFC in the FA governance reform process in late 2017, attended by FIFA and all key Australian football stakeholders. Subsequently, Nick was elected a director of AAFC and has served as its Chairman for almost 4 years, leading its advocacy for reform of the national second tier, including the establishment of a national second division.

Football (Soccer) fans have complained about Paramount coverage of the A-League for a number of reasons. One major one is that commentators are calling games from studios in other cities rather than at the stadium where game is being played.

It seems that other sports, including the biggest in Australia, the AFL are doing same.

As Rohan says, it may have started as a Covid measure but now it is purely a cost cutting exercise. By the way, I see this happening in many other sectors such as hotels that have cut room service, mini bars etc all in name of Covid but now quite simply good reason to cut costs and improve their own bottom lines.

AFL games being called from TV or radio studios in states thousands of kilometres away from the venue has been something of an elephant in the room in mainstream media, at least until last weekend, when that elephant burst spectacularly loose.
