Passenger trains disappeared from Tasmania`s main line railways in 1978 but one still operates at Don River Railway!
We are a full-size railway that runs from the Don Village near Devonport to Coles beach established in 1973.
Don River Railway offers a 30 minute return rail journey which meanders its way along on the eastern bank of the picturesque Don River taking in beautiful bush land along the way.
There is a mixture of railcars, diesel and steam locomotives and rolling stock at Don River Railway which were all once used on the Tasmanian mainline.
While at Don River Railway you will also be able to explore the new look museum, signal box, workshops, an operating turntable and the largest collection of steam and diesel locomotives and carriages in dating from 1871 to 1970 – and don’t forget to see the Royal Carriage – a restored one of a kind masterpiece from 1879!
Take time to view the fully operational workshop, where you will find volunteers working on railway repairs and restorations who will be happy to show you through.
You will make historical discoveries about the Emu Bay Railway (EBR), the Tasmanian Government Railways (TGR) along with many items from the Tasmanian Mainline Railways, which dates back to the 1870’s.
The Don River Railway is the North West Coast's Premier Tourist Attraction and one of Australia's finest heritage passenger carrying railways.
Located only five minutes from the Devonport CBD, we have plenty of parking (and RV Parking) and easy access to the Bass Highway.
Operating times: The railway is currently open to the public on weekends only as we recover from the effects of Covid-19.
Trains run on Saturdays and Sundays with departures at 10am, 11am, 12nm, 1:30pm, 2:30pm and 3:30pm.
The Don River Railway also has a restoration workshop in the Inveresk Railyard Precinct in Launceston where historic items of rolling stock are constantly under restoration. This facility is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday mornings
Don River Railway is owned and operated by members and volunteers who enjoy running and operating trains and 100% of our profit goes back into the railway to maintain our assets to ensure we continue; "Re-creating living Tasmanian Railway history, for the benefit of the entire region".
