Today we had our 2025-26 season Championship Club Singles and the winners were Mary Firth and Dennis Throup. Mary bowled against Elaine Thorpe and Dennis bowled against Vince Marcarella. I am sure they all bowled very well and did themselves and our club proud. I am sure Mary would of been very happy with her performance as she has been runners up a few times.
Dennis and Mary are both Division 1 bowlers and have represented our club on many occassions and done very well.
Congratulations to you both and commiserations to ElaineThorpe and Vince Marcarella.
It was great to see so many bowlers having a go and entering in this major event.
Thank you to our markers Margie Rhodes and John Bignal and also thank you to Richard Joyner for taking the photos.

Melbourne cup Celebrations at the Drouin Bowls club. We had a lovely day, even though we did have some rain. A big thank you to all our helpers on the day, and our members who organised the
Sweepes John Bulma and his wife Val who worked hard all day long. Thank You also to Merv Appleyard for lending a helping hand as well. There were lots of prises and many raffles which was great. Thank You to Irene Dawson and her team of committee members who also helped, in the kitchen and not forgetting Russell Dawson attending the bar. A thank you to Margaret Owens who bought in some beautiful roses to decorate the tables, and Glenda Jarred helped with the photos. Hope you all had a great day. Thank You to all.

We are saying good bye to a valued life-member of the Drouin Bowls club.
John Andrew Hedley was born on 25 October1931- passed away on 15 October 2025. He died peacefully at Lyrebird, in Drouin with his wife Hazel by his side.
John and Hazel had a large family and lived in Drouin for many years. They met at school and were married for 71 years, they had 3 children, 8 grandchildren and 16 GGrandchildren.
John was a Collingwood supporter and loved his bowls, also loved gardening, grew beautiful orchids, when he retired at 64 they enjoyed travelling around Australia, and overseas to different places, they especially liked Japan.
John was a member of the DBC for many years. Quite a few members remember him well and said he was a great guy ready to help when he could, he was a handy bowler they said, he helped quite a bit with building and upkeep of the greens. He tended the bar and being a life-member he would of done an anormous amount to help around the club.
As you will see in a couple of the photos he was in a few of the MGBA Division 1 teams that won Premierships in 1997-98 and 2000-01

Congratulations to Russell Dawson who has just been awarded Life Membership. A well deserved honour, Russell has been a great asset to the Drouin Bowls club, and has worked very hard to better our club. He is respected and loved by all, always doing his best to please and help members.
Russell was a good all round cricketer in his younger days. He especially enjoyed his spin bowling. He loved his fishing, rabbit shooting and of course his football. His team of Geelong will be with him until he dies. Russell spent a period of time in the army and served his country in the Vietnam war.
After retiring as General Manager at Shaw Industries through ill health he and Irene moved to Drouin. Russell has enjoyed his time of 30 years living in Drouin, where he played golf and joined the local bowls club in 2002.
He played in the pennant teams for a number of years, unfortunetely he had trouble with his right foot, and could not play for a while, he eventually got himself an arm and he is happily back again enjoying his bowls.
Russell worked on the bar for 20 years, firstly helping Ian Rhodes, then Russell took over the bar and became Bar manager. He was on the selection committee and in 2016 he became a Board member. He took on the job of Vice -Chairman, then Chairman of the board. He began to apply for grants and was successful with a grant of $6,400 to replace the indoor bowls mats. He then applied for another large grant for $248.000, for our number one Green.
The Latrobe Valley Authority finally authorised the grant after 10 months of meetings, with a good result.
Russell worked in conjunction with Andre De Waele to secure many other grants to refurbish inside and outside the clubrooms. These included the bar, painting both inside and outside the club rooms, new carpet, blinds, new fridges and freezers, lighting upgrades, air conditioners, upgrade of men's toilets, pantry, new outdoor shelters. None of these refurbishments would have been completed without the help of the hard working members of the club. Russell also was part of the team of the RSL Drouin/Warragul clubs who represented country Victoria at Moama and Deniliquin bowls clubs.
Russell is currently looking after sponsorship and any new projects that will help our club.
Thank You Russell for everything you have done to help our club and all us members, and wish you all the best for the future.

These ladies (Denise Hamilton, Margaret Rhodes, Glenda Jarred and Irene Dawson) were representing our club to support the Corinella bowls club for their first annual PINK BOWL, Suppport the McGrath Foundation. The day started off with Champagne and nibbles for breakfast, then lunch and afternoon tea. It was a real fun day with all the frivolity of Corinella, there were heaps of prizes through out the day,and different activites to join in, also they had a guest entertainer after lunch singing all the old favourites. The raffles contained over $1200 worth of prizes
Apparently the mayor also attended and the Sentinel times will be doing a story.
Congratulations to Corinella bowls club for raising an amazing amount of money. ...$4,000.00

Congratulations and a Happy 80th Birthday to Les Firth for tomorrow 24th August, who has been a member of the Drouin bowls Club since 2016. He is a valued person loved and respected by all the members.
Les has done so many different jobs for our club, helping with the coaching of members, he is also a umpire, worked in the kitchen, as well as cutting the lawns and for quite a few years a secretary of the Combined Match & Tournament Committee. Les and Mary also ran the Twilight bowls for anybody who was interested in learning to bowl and having fun, it has become a very popular event.
Les bowled in a few Pennant Premiership Grand Finals for Drouin.
He is always willing to help anyway he can. He took a personal interest in helping the other bowlers who were having difficulty.
Les enjoyed playing football at Benella where he also was an umpire in his younger years, Mary his wife also said he enjoyed playing Squash at Frankston, which he was very good at.
Les started bowling at Shepparton Bowls club where he won his first Club Single Championship.
He then moved to Toora Beach Bowls club and continued to bowl very well. Les won another 7 Club Single Championships, which is amazing. A wonderful achievement, something to be very proud of and to remember.
Les then arrived at the Drouin Bowls Club and won another 3 Club Single Championships, a wonderful career he has enjoyed as a bowler.
Les has bowled in many events, such as Club pairs, triples, fours etc. He enjoys bowling during the Pennant season, Grandfinals and many tournaments which he has had to travelled far..
He also is on the committee which ran the combined Warragul & Drouin RSL bowls teams.
Two teams headed off to bowl as a representive of Victorian country sides. One team headed off to Moama and the other team went to Deniliquin for 3 days, which was a successful venture.
I forgot to say that he also won the Ian Rhodes trophy for best club member a couple of years ago.
Well done Les.
