Congratulations and a Happy 80th Birthday to Les Firth for tomorrow 24th August, who has been a member of the Drouin bowls Club since 2016. He is a valued person loved and respected by all the members.
Les has done so many different jobs for our club, helping with the coaching of members, he is a umpire, worked in the kitchen, as well as cutting the lawns and for quite a few years a secretary of the Combined Match & Tournament Committee. Les and Mary also ran the Twilight bowls for anybody who was interested in learning to bowl and having fun, it has become a very popular event.
Les bowled in a few Pennant Premiership Grand Finals for Drouin.
He is always willing to help anyway he can. He took a personal interest in helping the other bowlers who were having difficulty.
Les enjoyed playing football at Benella where he also was an umpire in his younger years, Mary his wife also said he enjoyed playing Squash at Frankston, which he was very good at.
Les started bowling at Shepparton Bowls club where he won his first Club Single Championship.
He then moved to Toora Beach Bowls club and continued to bowl very well. Les won another 7 Club Single Championships, which is amazing. A wonderful achievement, something to be very proud of and to remember.
Les then arrived at the Drouin Bowls Club and won another 3 Club Single Championships, a wonderful career he has enjoyed as a bowler.
Les has bowled in many events, such as Club pairs, triples, fours etc. He enjoys bowling during the Pennant season, Grandfinals and many tournaments which he has had to travelled far..
He also is on the committee which ran the combined Warragul & Drouin RSL bowls teams.
Two teams headed off to bowl as a representive of Victorian country sides. One team headed off to Moama and the other team went to Deniliquin for 3 days, which was a successful venture.
I forgot to say that he also won the Ian Rhodes trophy for best club member a couple of years ago.
Well done Les.

Drouin bowls club are saying good bye to one of their club members, Jim Herbert Purvis who passed away peacefully on June 26 at the age of 92. Our condolences go to his wife Ellen and all the family. Jim was with the Drouin Bowls club for quite a few years, he was loved and respected, a good person who cared for everybody, he loved his social bowls, and enjoyed his pennant.
Jim was a member of Division 6 Saturday Pennant team 23/24 Grand Final who bowled against Long Warry. He bowled at the age of 90 and it was a very hot day, which didn't help, but the team went ahead and won, what a victory for the club, Jim had a fall and was hurt, but he continued bowling, the next day they had to come back to Moe and bowl the next morning. (due to the heat). A well earned victory to the bowlers and the club. A very happy man was Jimmy.
Jim was a very hard working family man, who loved his family, his grandchildren and great grandchildren, he got along with everyone and had a great connection with the younger people, helping his neighbours. He was a farmer for 55 years, as well as working on the railway, he loved his fishing and often took his grandchildren out on his boat.
He also went to live in Bairnsdale for about 4 years, where he started bowling, he then decided to come back to farming, he bowled at the Neerim South bowls club, he then joined the Long Warry bowls club and as we all know he ended up at our Drouin bowls club. He was always a gentleman and we all loved him, he loved his pennant and enjoyed his Wednesday social bowls. He liked to have a beer (frothy) with his mates which gave him a lot of joy, a very friendly character who made many friends and enjoying the company of others. RIP Jim Purvis.

Drouin Bowls Club would like to wish all the members and visitors a wonderful Easter. Tonight we enjoyed our Good Friday Fish & Chip night, a Easter celebration which was successful once again with 130 guests, good to see the residents of Drouin attend.
Thank you to our organiser Lorraine Fox (foxy) who did a wonderful job, thank you to Irene who greeted all the guests and told us jokes again, she also organised all the Easter hampers, which is a huge job, in it self, there would of been about 15 to 20 hampers, and she put them together and wrapped each one. Thank you Irene.
Thank you to Margie also helping with the sweets and Margaret Owens for assisting Irene with the raffles, not forgetting the girls selling the tickets, Helen and Gwen.
A big thank you to all the members who helped in the kitchen both morning and evening, not a easy job. The food was excellent once again.
Our new bar manager Bruce and barman Gary.

Today we had our Club Mixed Pairs Championship for season 2024-25.
Congratulations to our winners Dennis Throup and Denise Hamilton.
Commiserations to our Runners up Phil and Glenda Jarred
A great game to watch' with a lot of good bowling by both teams. Dennis and Denise were both on target and bowled extremely well. Phil and Glenda also bowled well, but unfortunetely their bowls were taken out. The score dosen't do justice to the result. Well Done everybody.
