🌿 Final Plenary Highlights – Day 3 at
We closed our plenary sessions on a high, with two internationally recognised leaders in plant breeding sharing their cutting-edge research:

🤤 Professor Rebecca Ford (Griffith University)
Delighted us with her work on improving papaya for the consumer, breeding for better flavour and fruit morphology. Her team is leveraging genomic technologies to enhance the eating experience—bridging the gap between science and supermarket shelves.

🇩🇪 Professor Rod Snowdon (Justus Liebig University, Germany)
Shared an inspiring overview of his team’s innovations across the full spectrum of plant breeding, from trait discovery to digital phenotyping. His presentation highlighted how plant breeding is now pushing boundaries of technology, data, and collaboration to support the next generation of crop development.

🌾 Day 2 Plenary Recap –
This morning’s plenary explored the intersection of genetic resources, grower needs, and cutting-edge analytics in plant breeding.

🌱 Dr Sally Norton (Australian Grains Genebank)
Presented the transformation of AGG into a bio-digital resource centre, showcasing its vital role in conserving crop biodiversity and equipping breeders with genomic and digital tools to unlock trait potential. A standout example of how strategic partnerships and innovation are shaping climate-resilient agriculture.

👨‍🌾 Grower Panel: Connor Baker, Rob Bell & Shane Kay
A grounded and insightful discussion from three industry leaders, sharing their perspectives on variety selection, trait priorities, and the balance between grower needs and consumer demand. Key challenges included disease pressure, salinity, and genetic diversity—underscoring the need for continued collaboration with breeders.

📊 Dr Daniel Tolhurst (Roslin Institute, University of Edinburgh)
Introduced a novel framework for disentangling genotype × environment interactions, helping breeders better select for stability vs performance across diverse environments. His new R package, GEtools, provides a valuable tool for capturing complex G×E dynamics and optimising both broad and specific adaptation strategies.

An inspiring session bridging data, application, and the voice of end-users.

Plenary session #2 continues on with some invigorating talks!

🍇Hannah Robinson provides an overview of how she’s utilizing multi-omics approach to improve predictive breeding of perennial crops.

🌸Digby Growns highlights his work at Kings Park in conservation and breeding of several ornamental plant species, and how he’s leveraging an IP licensing model to provide an income stream back to the Gardens.

🧬Diversity Arrays Technology (DArT) shares how they’re helping plant breeding research and their commitment to sustainability

Plenary Session One Recap –
A powerful opening session exploring the future of plant breeding through collaboration, innovation, and impact:

🔬 Dr David Chagné (Plant & Food Research, NZ)
Shared a framework for research grounded in Māori values, highlighting data sovereignty, co-design, and community-led approaches to protect biocultural knowledge in native tree species.

🌾 Dr Jessica Hyles (GRDC)
Spoke to the opportunities across 25 levied crops, highlighting the importance of investing in transformative ideas—like nitrogen use efficiency, multi-stress resilience, and soil-targeted genetic technologies—and outlined the critical role of ECRs in filling key research gaps.

🍊 Dr Zachary Stewart (QUT)
Presented a novel bioinformatics pipeline (psQTL) that helps overcome the challenge of long juvenility in citrus breeding. His tool enables efficient trait-linked marker discovery in small populations—paving the way for faster genetic gain in perennial crops.

A brilliant mix of perspectives to set the tone for a big week ahead!

The Next Gen Breeders Workshop co-hosted by ARC Training Centre in Predictive Breeding and the IRTG for Accelerated Crop Genetic Gain at UWA kicked off in Perth with an excellent start! 🌱

This inaugural event brought together plant breeders and researchers from Australia and around the globe, connecting industry professionals, academics, and early career researchers. Discussions covered career pathways in plant breeding and essential skills for the next generation, highlighting how the field continues evolving through genomics, data science, and sustainability approaches.

The workshop facilitated valuable networking between participants working across different crops and regions, with the beer tasting providing a perfect conclusion to intensive discussions. 🍺
