Tree Row Updates!
This is our weirdest and my favourite planting to date.
The production trees in the rest of this garden (east-west orientation) are all deciduous fruiting species; figs, pomegranates, nectarines, almonds, chestnuts. This southern row we’re using evergreen production species like banksias to form a windbreak and provide food and shelter for pollinators.
In our other garden (north-south orientation) I’m really excited to be playing around with different species like bananas, blueberries, and other nut trees 🫐
Correction in the video the biomass species are c. citradora not c. maculata!

An updated the East Garden! Last video, we’d just prepped/planted the first kale and silverbeet, now we’ve got trees, salad, beets and a hoop house for zucchinis, tomatoes and eggplants! Summer is on its way 🌾☀️🌻

Cover crops ✅ After amending the plot with our community-supported compost a few weeks ago, we sowed a cover crop to feed the soil and build the soil structure.
We try to aim for at least 8 different species in our mixes because the more you have, the more diverse your soil biology. And more diverse biology equals healthier soil, which means healthier food and healthier humans!
At Common Ground Project, we’re trying to change the way Victorians grow, eat and think about food, with one patch of dirt at a time. Right now, we’re focused on composting two fields for our market garden, with the goal of restoring nutrients in the soil. This will help us grow better vegetables for the social enterprise programs we run, like the ones you can hear about in this video👆🏼
But we need your help! The amount of compost we need is way bigger than what we can make ourselves - we have to raise $10,000. And we’re a quarter of the way there.
Help us reach our target and get compost on the farm before this next planting cycle is finished. Every little bit helps. The link to donate is in our bio.
