Introducing Shanita Vice 🎧

Kate McAnergney, aka Shanita Vice, began her DJ journey as part of the 1990s NZ rave scene. As DJ K8 she mixed ambience and electronica in many a chill-out zone, as well as hosting a weekly show on student radio for 3 years. After moving to Australia in 1999, life took its twists and turns and Kate has been a yoga teacher for over 20 years now.

In 2019 Kate began dreaming of getting back into DJing, so she bought turntables, resurrected her long-treasured collection of vinyl records and started working on her rusty beat-mixing skills just in time for COVID!

As Shanita Vice, Kate now plays regular vinyl DJ sets around Geelong and the Surfcoast. She prefers not to limit herself to one or two genres and instead enjoys playing an eclectic mix of music that lifts spirits - getting people’s hearts smiling and toes tapping - whether that be schmoozy soul and yacht rock, lush 70s disco, 80s funk, boogie, new wave and hip hop or 90s house classics.

Shanita Vice will be spinning 7s at Limeburners Saturday Social later this month, to help us celebrate the launch of our spring/summer Art Showcase.

Join us on Saturday 16 November. Shanita on the decks from 2-5pm, bringing us the atmosphere to match our "afternoon party" mood! 🥂

We had a crazy idea... me and my OCD crew.... which became a reality last weekend. Yeah the weather was a bit s**t and it was the night before Father's day but honestly we couldn't have been happier. People came, they laughed, they danced... new friends were made and we are all already excited for the next one. Onwards and upwards!!!! 🚀

ARTIST PROFILE #17

Kate McAnergney began her DJ journey during her misspent youth as part of the 1990s Chch/Ōtautahi rave scene. As DJ K8 she played in the chill-out zone at numerous key late 90s raves and festivals plus spent 3 years at the helm of the weekly radio show “Rotate Your State” on RDU, blending ambient music and electronica into soundscapes layered with found sounds and records foraged from op shops. Fast forward 2 decades and Kate’s passion for hunting down vinyl (especially in the fabled 7” format) never waned, so in 2019 she began dreaming of DJing seriously again… As Shanita Vice, Kate now plays regularly around her current hometown of Geelong, Australia. She has a passion for tunes that get people’s hearts smiling and bodies moving - whether that be disco classics, 80s soul/funk/R+B, euro-dance, early hip-hop or quirky new wave.

DJ K8’s first club set (of electronica/ambience!!) at the now demolished Ministry Nightclub in chch waaaaaay back in ummmmm 1996 😮🐣🪩 I’ll be back near the scene of the crime in a month at Heads in the Cloud … super honoured to be on the bill with so many amazing djs/pioneers of the chch rave scene from that time who influenced/inspired me no end 🫶🫶✨

Back when I was K8 and played ambience/soundscapes and miscellaneous electronica (sooo late 90s people!!) … i wish I could remember more about this event apart from the fact it happened in an abandoned mill of some sort in the middle of bloody nowhere (aka Otira in the southern alps of NZ) in early 1999 just before I packed up and moved to Australia. Tix were $5 and looks like there were Roboscans!
