R U OK today?

R U OK today?

Ask R U OK? any day because life happens every day.

Any day is a day to check in with a family member, partner, friend, colleague, and neighbour to see if they're ok. Especially if they work or volunteer in palliative care. A simple question, R U OK? could change a life.

If you’re not sure how to begin this conversation, try this:
🔸 Ask R U OK?
🔸 Listen
🔸 Encourage action
🔸 Check in

Happy Father's Day to all those who are celebrating today. Best wishes to those first-time fathers, those who have been fathers for many many years, those who have stepped in as father figures and those who are father to fur children.

Please think of those who have lost fathers this year and light a candle in remembrance of them.

I recently had the chance to visit Alluvium Water Cremations when they opened their doors to industry. It was a fascinating experience to learn about this very different way of cremation.

Something very exciting for those styling their own tables. A great session not to be missed.

Have you planned your funeral, your final goodbye?

Chances are you haven’t, and you’re not alone. Only 1 in 5 Australians have talked to their family and friends about how they want to be farewelled.

Starting this Wednesday 14 August on SBS is ‘Ray Martin: The Last Goodbye’.

In this three-part series, the multiple gold Logie-award winning journalist takes a deep dive into the nation’s last taboo – death.

Like many Australians, Ray hasn’t talked about his wishes to his family and friends. And, as a baby boomer, in four years’ time, Ray will reach the average age of death – 83.

Through insights and humour, Ray looks at the way death is treated among cultures, religions and different viewpoints as he sets about planning his own funeral and how he is laid to eternal rest.

You can watch the trailer here - https://loom.ly/4WO3qic and tune in to SBS or SBS On Demand on Wednesday 14 August at 8.30pm.

I wonder if any funeral homes have a support cat? I know there are support cats in aged care facilities. Beautiful idea to have pets give comfort to people.

Meet Barry! He's the support dog at Drayton and Toowoomba Cemetery. He offers a welcoming wag of the tail to grieving families.

When people go into the cemetery office, they’re usually there to organise some sort of memorial for their loved one at the cemetery. It can be a tough time.

“It’s a horrible thing to have happen, to be dealing with the death of a loved one, people are bereaved, they’re upset, and then they have to create a memorial,” says cemetery coordinator Kerena McDonald.

“Barry comes in. He sits next to the people on the chair, and they pat him, and they relax."

The interaction makes a difficult time a little bit easier. Go Barry!
You can read more about Barry in my blog here: https://thebottomdrawerbook.com.au/2024/07/14/barry-the-cemetery-support-dog/

I had the pleasure of meeting him at a recent training day put on by the Australasian Cemeteries & Crematoria Association. I've met some funeral directors who have a dog in the office too. If you've got a support dog where you work, feel free to share how legendary they are in the comments. Bonus points for photos! 🐕‍🦺🐕💛

If you ever feel uncertain about your marriage celebrant, do your homework and check they are registered as authorised marriage celebrants.

You can check on the Attorney General's website.

We don’t love this!

A fake marriage celebrant has been sentenced for defrauding five couples in Victoria.
The Melbourne man, 31, said ‘I do’ to pleading guilty to impersonating a Commonwealth officer and performing fake ceremonies solemnising five invalid marriages between March 2022 and April 2023. All marriages performed by the offender are considered invalid.

AFP officers began their investigation after the fifth couple reported the man, as they couldn’t find his name on the register of authorised celebrants.

The man was handed a six-month Community Corrections Order (CCO) with a single condition of performing 50 hours’ of community work.

The AFP has a zero-tolerance approach to individuals committing fraud, and other forms of corruption. The AFP will continue to work with its state and Commonwealth law enforcement partners to proactively target, identify, and disrupt fraudsters who are attempting to exploit and profit from members of the community.

It's a great day to be snuggled up in a warm house writing marriage ceremonies for my lovely couples. I love weaving their stories into their very personal ceremonies. Couples, there are drafts coming your way soon!

Lovely article on how to support someone who loses their pet. Pets are family too and it's devastating when we lose our fur/feather friends.

The death of a pet can be a devastating experience, leaving behind a big void in the lives of those who loved and cared for them. The deep bond formed with a pet can bring immense joy and comfort, so it is understandable when a beloved pet passes as the loss can be profound. It is disheartening that...
