CBV annual presentation dinner

On Friday, 31 May, Vikings from all sections of the Club gathered for the Annual Presentation Dinner to celebrate the outstanding achievements of the 2023/24 season and recognise Club Members who have made a positive impact across patrol and lifesaving, surf sports and culture.

We were also pleased to have members of our Supporters’ Staff, including our Kinship and VIKA team join the fun this year. It was another great evening with special guests, The Hon. Karen Andrews, MP for McPherson, Laura Ge**er, Currumbin MP and Gail O’Neill, Division 14 Councillor along with our sponsors who presented various awards. We’re proud to recognise our Club person of the Year, Robert Dunlop, who has been a key part of the Surf Club Council, our fundraising efforts and the Lifesaver Team this season.

This year was particularly special with the introduction of two new perpetual awards in honour of two Vikings legends. The inaugural Ted Carey Volunteer of the Year was awarded to Team Manager, Kurtis Smith and we were honoured to have Ted’s daughter, Leanne, and extended family and friends to present the award. Our second new inaugural award was the Sue Shepherd award for Excellence in Service.

The award went to Zoe Youngman, our amazing Head Chef, and was presented by Sue’s son, Tim Wolfgang. A huge thank you to Kristy Smith, Sharon Brennan, Ben Munro and the wider Surf Club and Supporters’ staff team who made the night such a success. A true One Club effort.

Vikings Winter Warriors

It was another superb morning at Currumbin Beach on Sunday, 16 June for Round 2 of the Vikings Winter Warriors.

With a small, crisp swell on offer, the contest was a body surfing master class between young and old.

The Masters Champion and claim of the day aptly went to the Vikings’ very own Winter, Mr Sean Winter.

The rivalry for the longest wave of the day was a highlight and closely contested, however, the winner on the day was Riley Brennan and the participation award went to Jackson Brennan.

Thank you to Kristy and Kurtis Smith for organising the morning, prizes and most importantly, the BBQ breakfast.

Do you have the surf skills to take the chocolates in Round 3?

We encourage all Vikings to come down to participate or spectate and support from the sidelines at the next event on Sunday, 28 July from 7:30am.

Vintage Vikings 2024

The annual Vintage Vikings get together was held in the Vikings Room on a stunning afternoon on Saturday, 25 May 2024.

The afternoon is always a fantastic opportunity for past and present Vikings to catch up over a few beverages and enjoy the hospitality of the Supporters’ Club.

Once again, we had many familiar faces present and there were laughs, tall stories and drinks all round.

This year was the first without our beloved Club Patron, Ted Carey, who never missed an event and was such a good friend and source of wisdom to so many of the Vintage Vikings throughout his time with the Club. His memory was toasted amongst the group and we’ve no doubt that he was smiling upon us.

Thank you as always goes to John Lacheca, who once again was instrumental in organising the afternoon and gathering the tribe. John was recognised at this year’s Presentation Dinner for his quarter century service to the Club and Vintage Vikings is one of his great passions.

We also wish to thank the social and events teams at the Club for hosting the afternoon and creating such a seamless experience.

Keep a lookout for next year’s event and we hope to see even more Vikings in 2025. Remember, Vintage isn’t old, it’s classic.

On Sunday, 28 April our Nippers gathered at the Currumbin Alleygators Rugby Union Club for a fun filled afternoon to celebrate the season. This year saw plenty of highlights from the opening of the new JAC Club to the 3-day Nipper Camp and some powerful results in competition. We also farewelled our U14 Nippers who are graduating to the Senior Club next season. CBV in Surf Lifesaving

On Friday, 3 May, the Vikings hosted a special dinner to honour our Club Members who were recognised as National Medal Recipients for at least 15 years of service, presented by The Hon. A huge thank you goes to our amazing Supporters’ Staff for all their preparation, efforts and service at this year’s CBV Annual Presentation Dinner in May. There is a massive amount of work that goes in behind the scenes both before and on the night of the event to make the evening one of the highlights of the Club calendar. It was brilliant to have a table of our Supporters’ Staff this year who experienced the event from the other side of the pass. It was a privilege to witness the connection between the staff as they came together for a photo after Zoe Youngman received the inaugural Sue Shepherd Award.

Thank you Mighty Vikings. We are blessed to have such a great group of staff who strive to live the Vikings Values each day.

Check out our newly minted courtesy bus and book a local ride to the Club to enjoy our delicious offerings and the best view on the Gold Coast. ANZAC DAY

In the darkness, thousands gathered on Currumbin Beach for the ANZAC Dawn Service to remember and honour the courageous men and women who have served in the Australian and New Zealand defence forces.

The sound of the bagpipes and drums echoed along the coast as Veterans marched to the ceremonial site in front of Elephant Rock, before the notes of the digeridoo played by Glenn Barry (Gamilaraay) commenced the service.

Michael Humphreys, President, and Peter Thorpe, Deputy President of the Currumbin Palm Beach RSL led the service, including a recitation of The Ode of Remembrance by the great Ron Workman OAM. This year, special recognition of servicemen and women who lost their lives in peacetime accidents was led by Suzanne Shipp of the Currumbin Palm Beach RSL Sub Branch.

A moving address from Major Nick McRae of the Australian Army reminded us of the similarities in terrain between Currumbin Beach and ANZAC Cove. He painted vivid imagery of the reality of what our ANZACs faced that morning at Gallipoli and the sacrifice those thousands of men made for us that day.

“We are them, and they are us”

Major McRae reminded us that we gather on 25 April each year to reflect on how those men, and the many defence force personnel since, have helped shape who we are as nations. Each year, we renew our pledge to remember them and never forget their sacrifice to protect the freedom and values we hold dear.

Aussies youth dinner & senior after party

During a season of elite training, early morning rises, effort in the gym and time on the water, the fun of surf lifesaving competition can sometimes be lost.

Leave it to the Vikings to bring the good times to the fore and let loose once all the racing is done.

The traditional Youth Dinner for our youngest Vikings was enjoyed on the Saturday of their competition at Savvy Squire Mooloolaba. Our competitors gathered with their families, team managers and coaches to reflect on the first day of racing and cement the team.

After Super Sunday, the senior Vikings enjoyed a team debrief at the Duporth Tavern, Maroochydore.

On Mad Monday, the Salties donned the Matilda’s uniform and the Boaties turned the Sunshine Coast green and white. Special mention goes to Chook for his Riddler’s barbecue lesson at the park.

AUSSIES 2024

Thank You To the Vikings Support Crew

Neither the season, nor the results at The Aussies could have been achieved without the invaluable support of a whole village. The Currumbin Vikings is a true family Club and we’re blessed to call so many amazing human beings part of our tribe.

Big thanks to our fearless leader King Kurtis who has had a mammoth job as Team Manager this season. We thank you for all that you have done and continue to do for the Club and our athletes/members. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed.

Thanks also to our Club Coaches and Sweeps for your commitment, dedication and tireless efforts supporting our members in their surf sports disciplines and training pursuits. From the early morning swims, boat sessions, iron sessions through to the arvo ski, board, beach and surf rescue training, our members have been well catered for this season.

To our officials at Aussies - Ben, JB, Sharleen, TC, Kate, Dennis, Charles and Judith - we thank you for putting up your hand to officiate over many long days.

To Sharon and Carole, nothing would function as well without you two in the engine room.

To Rachel Clark for her fabulous photography, capturing the spirit of the week.

Finally, to all our Vikings supporters and families who have stood by our athletes day in and day out, we extend our appreciation to you. It’s the little tasks that see our members through the season - transporting gear, putting up tents, packing carnival lunches, laundering togs, towels and uniforms, and an oh-so-gentle nudge out the door on the coldest of mornings. Thanks to the Vikings Family for this season - you truly were Mighty.

DayS 8 & 9 - Super Finals Weekend

Our Boaties had a huge program at Alexandra Headlands to get through all their races due to the weather forecast, for an almighty Super Saturday. It was tough conditions at the boat arena with Alley 1 claiming a number of scalps from a variety of Clubs over the course of the day. The racing was exciting - rarely was any one crew able to lead for the entire race due to the changing conditions and the waves on offer.

Congratulations to our Reserve Male crew, the Currumbin Odins, who continued their season of fantastic results with a Bronze in the final. Well done to the crew of Kale Fogg, Jesse O’Neill, Darren Clunes, Jack Ryan and Lyle Clark.

Congratulations also goes to our Reserve Females, the Currumbin Collectors and Open Males, the legendary Barbarians who made their finals.

To finish off an amazing day, the Vikings Crew again headed to the sands of Mooloolaba to watch the finals of the Beach Flags. Our beach Queens were nothing short of amazing with Tahlia Sunderland bringing home silver in the U19 Female Beach Flags and EJ Forsyth crowned Australian Champion for the 6th time. The Vikings family made their presence known in the stands and the Vikings’ clap rang out loud and clear before each run so that everyone knew who we were there for.

The weather on Super Sunday was close to cyclonic, yet the brave Vikings showed up for one another to round out the competition. Congratulations to Riley Brennan who claimed Bronze in the U19 Surf Race on the final day of competition.

DayS 8 & 9 - Super Finals Weekend

The rain didn’t dampen our Vikings spirit on Saturday as our Mighty Vikings rose to the occasion and delivered across the beach, boats and ocean. Vikings love a team event and on Saturday, we were out to prove it. One of our favourite Club events - The Lifesaver Relay - saw not only one team, but both our Currumbin teams podium, with Team A crowned Australian Champions after chasing down a lead from Maroochydore & Surfers Paradise, and Team B coming home strong for the Bronze.

Congratulations to our Vikings teams: Currumbin Team A: Currumbin Cockatoos of Kelissa Brockett, Tara Coates, Lisa Moseley, Sascha O’Keefe and Chook Wildman (female surf boat); Lucas Berezwick (board); Callum Brennan (swim); Jayden Erskine (ski); and Kobi Holden (U17 sprint). Currumbin Team B: Currumbin Hunters of Elise Buchanan, Genevieve Kelly, Tara Townsend, Marianne Walker and Lyle Clark (female surf boat); Nick Green (board); Riley Brennan (swim); James Johnson (ski); and Vern Winter (U17 sprint).

Backing up following that epic race, the Mighty Vikings showcased their surf skills to take the silver medal in the inaugural Mixed Taplin Relay - what a result. Congratulations to Jayden Erskine, Kirsty Higgison, Lucas Berezwick, Jayda Kempton, Chelsea Jones and Callum Brennan for their historic podium finish.

Day 7 - Friday Night Lights

The Currumbin Boaties joined the action on Friday at Alexandra Headlands. We had a huge contingent of surf boat crews at Aussies this year and it was fantastic to see so much green and white on the water. It certainly felt like there was a Currumbin crew in every race.

There was fierce competition across the waves with crews required to row up to three rounds and two semis just to reach a final. A massive congratulations goes to the Currumbin Drakkars who came second in the U19 Male Surf Boats on Friday. The Drakkars crew of Jack O’Toole, Luke Power, Elliot Shaw and Jonny Munro were swept by Anthony O’Toole and gave the Vikings plenty to cheer about on day one of the boat competition. The Drakkars are just one example of the generational reach of the boaties within Currumbin, with Anthony sweeping son Jack to a medal. Congratulations also to the Chilli Pepperz who narrowly missed out on a medal, finishing 4th in the U19 Female Boats.

Friday evening and we were back under the lights at Mooloolaba to watch the beach relay events. And wouldn’t you know it, our Vikings team delivered the goods, becoming the Champions of the Open Mixed Beach Relay.

Congratulations to Tim Delahunty, EJ Forsyth, Tahlia Sunderland and Mathew Currie for their outstanding result in the sand. The celebratory vibes had us primed for finals weekend and some more team medals.

Days 5 & 6 - surf, boardS & beachies

Ben McCabe represented the Vikings at the Board Riding in Coolum and on Day 5 came third in the 50-59 Male Short Board Riding with a final score of 7.97. He carried on his blistering form the following day, securing a silver medal in the 50-59 Male Long Board event with a final score of 11.83.

Congratulations Benny. The U17, U19 and Open water competitors took to the ocean over Wednesday and Thursday undertaking rounds of qualifying for finals weekend. On Thursday, our Open Men’s Surf Team of Jacob Loughan, Callum Brennan, Riley Brennan and Gus Shivnan secured a well-earned bronze medal. That afternoon, the fast twitch fibres of the Beachies were on display at the track in front of Mooloolaba SLSC. Under the lights, a cohort of vocal Vikings gathered to support our beachies, EJ Forsyth, Tim Delahunty and Tahlia Sunderland in the sprint finals. Our Beach Queen, EJ claimed silver in the Open Women’s Beach Sprint in a nail-biting photo finish.

The gold medal was taken out by her Viking Athletics teammate, Chloe Mannix-Power, who was this year’s Stawell Gift winner. It was a tough field and we’re so proud of EJ’s efforts on the sand to bring home the silverware. Congratulations also to Tim and Tahlia who made the semi-finals of the Open Male Beach Sprint and U19 Female Beach Sprint respectively. It was just the start for our Beachies who had a sensational carnival.

IT’S A RIPPER TO BE A CURRUMBIN NIPPER

Our youngest Vikings got competition underway on Saturday, 13 April with the Youth Championships for U13 to U15 age groups and some of the best weather of the week.

For many, this was their first time competing at an Aussies event and the excitement amongst the group was palpable.

Our U13-U15 Vikings did Currumbin proud over the two days of competition. It’s no easy feat to be amongst the top competitors in the country and our youngest Vikings gave it their all and mixed it with the best of them.
A special mention goes to our superstar in the making, Ivy Artz, who made all her individual finals in the U13 female division, narrowly missing a medal in the board event.

Congratulations to our Youth team for the following finals results:
U13 Female Board Race: Ivy Artz, 7th
U13 Ironwoman: Ivy Artz, 15th
U13/U14 Female Surf Teams: Ivy Artz, Bronte Brennan, Nieve Kelly & Sena McCabe, 9th
U14 Male Beach Flags: Cal Fischer, 8th
U15 Male 2km Beach Run: Bobby Kennealy-Flegler, 5th
U15 Male Beach Flags: Bobby Kennealy-Flegler, 8th

Each of our Vikings competed with heart and in great spirit. We look forward to cheering you on again next year as you progress through the age groups. The future of the Vikings certainly looks bright.

THE VIKINGS ARE COMING

The Mighty Vikings’ Aussies campaign kicked off on Sunday, 7 April with a team briefing and breakfast at VIKA. Members representing the Vikings at the Australian Championships for the first time were issued with a Club cap, including the youngest competitor in the entire Championships, our own U13 Bronte Brennan.

Our Club President, Team Manager, Coaches and Captains shared words of encouragement and gratitude to all involved in getting the team ready throughout the season, igniting inspiration for the final week of preparations before racing commenced later that week.

The Currumbin Vikings had over 140 competitors from U13 to Masters, spanning across Surf Boats, Surf Rescue (Lifesaving), Beach, Board Riding, and Ocean events. They joined the over 8,000 registered athletes and members who raced over the 9 days of competition across the four beach venues at Mooloolaba, Maroochydore, Coolum and Alexandra Headlands.

Zenoz ASRLQ Championships

In a final hit out before Aussies, our Boaties competed in the final ASRLQ event this season, the Zenoz ASRLQ Championships at Burleigh Heads on 6 April.
The U19/23 division competed in block racing, followed by the Opens and Ressies in round robin competition with finals.

The conditions were challenging for surf boat racing and there were plenty of large waves on offer and a few spills over the day.

Congratulations to our Currumbin crews who secured some awesome results:
Open Male: Currumbin Barbarians 1st
Reserve Female: Currumbin Sirens 4th
U19/U23 Male: Currumbin Drakkars (U19) 2nd
U23 Female: Currumbin Valkyries 2nd & Currumbin Crocs 4th
U19 Female: Currumbin Kaos 2nd & Currumbin Chilli Pepperz 4th

CBV IN THE COMMUNITY 2024

MCPHERSON COMMUNITY ACHIEVERS

This month four of our Currumbin Beach Vikings were recognised for their contribution and dedication to our community through the McPherson Community Achiever Awards. The Awards recognise the amazing work done by residents in a variety of ways, including with local charities, sporting clubs, service organisations, community groups and other voluntary activities. Proving how important the surf lifesaving movement is to our region, there is a specific award category for service Community.

to the Surf Lifesaving Richie Ferris and Sarah Maritz were recognised this year for their tireless efforts to our Junior Activities Club. Their awards were presented to them by The Hon. Karen Andrews, MP for McPherson.

It’s no secret among the Vikings that Richie and Sarah are integral to the inner workings of the JAC and supporting our Nippers. They’re often the first ones to put their hands up to undertake background and support work, whether it be water safety, administration, age manager duties or the all-important barbecue duties. It’s heartening to see their efforts widely acknowledged.

Also recognised this year for services to Lifesaving were our Surf Club President, John Brennan OAM and our CEO, Michael Sullivan. Both well-deserved honours, although JB and Sully were absent due to the Surf Lifesaving Championships.

Congratulations to each of you for living and displaying the Vikings Way Values.
