I’ve missed coming home for my Mum’s birthday the last few years. Between my weddings and school reports and Mum’s work and HSC supervision, it’s always been a busy time of year. She never minded - and never complained - but I did. I minded. I complained. Life’s too short to miss birthdays - and family should come first.

I made a promise to myself to come home this year. I turned couples away, so I could prioritise spending this weekend with my Mum. We could go to the Tafe markets. We could watch the Jacaranda float procession. We could have cups of tea and cake on our back verandah. All the things we loved; all the things I missed.

We couldn’t have possibly known how this year would turn out, or how much we’d be missing her this birthday. But I am home, and I only hope that she’d be proud. We’ll put a pot of tea on for you.

Worried about signing? Don’t be. I’m with you (and your witnesses) every step of the way.

Here’s three things you might not know about signing your marriage certificates:
1️⃣ There are THREE certificates you must sign - one for me, one for the registry and a pretty one for you to keep
2️⃣ Sign as normal. No need to practise a “new signature” with your new last name. Your signature should match the paperwork you signed before getting married
3️⃣ The certificate you keep on the day is NOT to certificate you need if you’d like to change your name. That one comes via registered post from Births, Deaths and Marriages and costs extra (my shout).
