We have two rose arbors at Vogelweide Estate - both built and planted by the visionary gardeners who designed and planted this European-style garden. This arbor features the prolific, simple heritage rambler/climbing rose Wedding Day. When we bought the property, we were given strict instructions to never prune it or it wouldn’t flower. We learned from trial and error that pruning in late summer is safe - and necessary to stop it climbing the nearby cypress tree!

I was THRILLED to chat with local garden guru Willow and ABC Canberra Saturday Breakfast host Emma at the Capital Region Farmers Market, Canberra this morning! I loved getting Willow’s advice on our huge current garden project and will be floating for days after Emma said I was possibly the best gardener she knows 🥰🥰
First pic is me on the left. Second pic to see the time stamp and where you can hear the chat on the ABC app.

Spring continues to arrive in style, regardless of successive frosty nights. While sad about the lost plants - a dozen heirloom hydrangea seedlings I had grown over the last year, and possibly three young but established orange trees - the glow and colour of spring’s first flowers amongst slowly awakening trees is like nothing else.

Late summer and the garden is a gorgeous combination of exuberance and serene retirement into autumn. Spent globe artichoke flowers and rosehips add their own romance.

Keeping a 2 acre garden in peak condition takes a lot of time and energy - good thing we absolutely love our gardening! One of the thing that makes it vastly easier for us, is the ground work done by the original owners, who invested it in a whole bunch of flowering perennials. These stunners die off every winter, and are cut down, and re-emerge in the summer, full of colour and exuberance, and thrilling the bees. Here are a few of my favourites:
1. Salvia uliginosa, which grows well over 1m tall and will happily take over a garden bed if you let it
2. Buddlija davidii - cut it down every year or three, or prune, to keep it size down or leave it to grow into a spreading tree. An absolute favourite with all the pollinators, particularly the butterflies
3. Agapanthus - are wiped out by our harsh frosts, but never fail to come up again, and give the most glorious show in shades of purple, violet and white
4. Campanula punctata - one of the most delicate and elegant flowers, that is thriving in a tough garden bed that gets scorched by the hot afternoon sun.

Kanushka 🩷 Diana 10.12.22 - it is pretty amazing to think the first wedding at Vogelweide Estate was our own! We said 'I do' in front of those we love under stunning skies and the most astounding rose arbor, which timed its display perfectly. Best of all, we didn't even need to leave the estate to take our wedding portraits.
