We enjoyed a Melbourne CBD trip for our Winter break, lots of trains/trams, shops and sights including the MCG, Wicked, loads of legos, the Skydeck, Parliament House, shrine of remembrance, Victoria Markets and parks. I even snuck in a visit to the glorious which inspired me to come home and stock up with flowering plants for home and gifting to see how they go, come in and say hi - we missed you!

CLOSED for a winter break // Well it’s so lovely to love on people and be loved so warmly but every so often it’s a great idea to factor in a break, so we are having a two week winter break to rest and rejuvenate, connect and converse with some people we don’t see nearly enough and get a few things sorted for a smoother experience for Farm Gate Flowers on both sides of the counter.

Big thanks for too many things to mention, we will be back open for trade July 15, 2024.

Ah the craziness of a week to celebrate mothers is done and so is my back - it’s such a privledge to get older but gee I am feeling it lately! Apologies for the technical issues through the week, internet down and my landline got interrupted for about a day but we survived, I am only one person and it’s not perfect but if was far less stressful than it’s been before so I must be getting something right - we are now closed Saturdays for the rest of Autumn and Winter - and for my mental and physical health I am drastically reducing shop hours;

{ Monday - Friday 8.30 - 2.30pm }

The earlier opening time will suit some people for collections and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.

wreath making #2024 started yesterday with prepping greenery bases into our reusable and/or compostable willow bases - we are proudly for so many reasons but mostly because we just know that the men who fought for our country didn’t want us filling the land with micro plastics! It really is nice to see so many schools, RSL’s, local members of parliament (I am looking at you .thomas) CHOOSE to do things in line with their personal and professional values and actually walk the walk. We are really happy to collaborate with you in choosing local ethical ways to celebrate milestones.

The first Chrysanthemums and Ornamental Kale of the season means the change of weather is definitely upon us - which also means the last of the sunflowers and dahlias are with us, I am crossing my fingers for dahlias again next week BUT Mother Nature is the boss and she does whatever she wants - fingers crossed for .bought.a.little.farm

What’s your centrepiece for Easter 2024 look like?

Fresh flowers are always a great choice (I AM TOTALLY biased) and tickles my fancy by being easy, gorgeous and sustainable. Choose the biggest vase (read anything that can hold water) you have and fill it to overflowing with 3/4 flowers/foliage, what we want is different textures/colours/shapes for a good balanced eye catching design, bonus points if it smells amazing! Here I have used pineapple lily (3/4 weeks) mini spray roses (a week) swan flowers & gum (will both dry out) and I will replace the roses each week until Easter is done… it’s in the window and like all things FAR BETTER VIBES IRL than on your little screen, come and say hi instore and help support our small family business!

Way back when I was a home school mum I adored the .co home school community, even just for parenting guidance it rates high on my favourite spaces on the internet, I have two extra copies of the family book $39 each (SOLD) and I can honestly say that you will not regret this purchase, it’s an authentic heartfelt piece of love in action and would be a welcome addition to any great parents bookshelf.

Today I made flowers to welcome a brand new grand baby girl from a proud GrandPOP - wrapped two sunflowers for a beloved daughter having her 20 week twin scans - made a mixed bouquet with no Lillie’s for an 80th - I prepped this gorgeous Pot-et-Fleur as a thank YOU - took orders for an 89th birthday post, a funeral next week & wedding wholesale for DIY, fielded enquiries about delivery, costs etc. But the one that got to me today, and there is usually one each day that really gets to me, was a gorgeous 19yo girl who came by to buy bright and colourful flowers to help farewell a close friends mama who passed away last week, just four weeks after HER mama passed away from cancer that was diagnosed in September 2023, I hope she doesn’t mind me sharing a little bit of her story so we can all be mindful that the days with the people you hold dear are precious, really savour them, be there and be nice.

4 years ago I was naively nervous to be returning to full time employment after being a stay at home/home-schooling mum for nearly 10 years, which I still think of as some of the best invested years of my life - that time with my squishy third & fourth children was intentional, slow and special and I would do again in a heartbeat.

ALOT has changed since then, I got sober, single and stubbornly held on for dear life through the pandemic and really stretched my thinking personally & professionally while I juggled & made it work with not too many choices but to get on with it, I didn’t really even have time to consider what the alternatives were - a friend asked me point blank what on earth I would do if I wasn’t a flower shop owner and I couldn’t tell her then and I can’t tell you now!

Truth is - it’s saved me - watching all the customers love on each other, and knowing that mostly people are good to each other, families repair their relationships when they mess up, neighbours check on each other after surgeries, friends lament when a pet dies, sisters throw surprise hen’s parties, long time best friends know exactly which colours to get, grand children select a single rose to say farewell forever, boyfriends become fiancé, grown men’s eyes leak when asking for their departed mothers favourite flower, companies thank employees, groups send condolences, school send ‘get well soon’, birthdays, deaths, thank you and sorry… I never know who is coming in and what they might need, it used to be anxiety inducing but now I have found that most things are solvable. Some things are not. The start of some things inevitably means the natural end to others and once you let go of the old you can fully embrace the new even if you aren’t totally sure what it is going to be. Some days are light and love, and some people lives are so heavy that I finish my day and am so grateful for healthy children and the ability to provide for them even though it’s a lot of hard work.

Thanks for all being here with me, my name is Rebecca and I am a small business owner 😉

For the useless trivia you didn’t ask for: today I have participated in making 7 birthday bouquets before lunchtime, this kind of coincidence always makes me think, hmm, I wonder what happened 9 months (40 weeks) prior to this date? So I look it up, I do the math, because I just need to know! ANZAC DAY every year there was lots to celebrate 😉 if you know what I mean!

This week I had the privilege of organising stunning hydrangea for a customer who needed at least 36 stems for her family and friends to place at her mothers farewell celebration today, it was a favourite her mum grew in the garden and while it’s not grown locally commercially, I knew exactly who to call and they did not disappoint - LOOK AT THE COLOURS!
At the risk of repeating myself, I adore using local in-season flowers for milestones and special occasions, every single person who loved that woman will think of her every single time they see hydrangeas AND on the anniversary of her passing they will be in flower all over Hobart, Mother Nature nodding to everyone that knew her and she will be remembered fondly and gently, without it being forced or any digital reminders necessary. I just love that.

I have been dreaming up new ideas and gifts to fill up the florist for 2024, I am PUMPED & I have more ideas than time to be honest AND I want to know what you all want to see? More dresses? Tops? A local maker I need to get to know? A particular product? Private message me if you prefer.

SAGE advice from as always, if you can’t see someone nice then BE someone nice ❤️♥️

Our Story

After working for Brenda and John for almost 9 years, at Northgate, Farm Gate Flowers and Salamanca my husband Adam and I were offered the lease on the retail space at 205 New Town Road opposite Ogilvie High School in the old Trophy Traders building. What an incredible opportunity and dream come true!

Brenda and John have been in the flower growing and selling industry in Hobart for over 23 years and will continue to supply the shop with their farm fresh flowers and foliage through the week, and will be at Salamanca markets on Saturdays for visits and great market prices.

I am excited to be able to welcome other Tasmanian flower farmers into the shop and we are proud to offer Tasmanian gift lines. We sell direct to the public at wholesale prices and also produce posies, bouquets and arrangements for sale and delivery around the greater Hobart region. We welcome single stem purchases, right through to events and weddings, and will be offering hire items and bespoke handmade things to mark your celebrations. We look forward to hearing about how we can help using our unique style and skills while being mindful how our choices affect the environment.
