Derwent Regency Festival goes to gaol; early bird tickets until 31st October

Good morning, all,

Early bird tickets for the Derwent Regency Festival are available until 31st October, at
https://events.humanitix.com/derwentregencyfestival24

Celebrate the Regency era in style and fun with a Regency evening at Narryna Heritage Museum, dance workshops and a Grand Regency Ball in the fine St James Church Hall in New Town, a Regency Assembly of dancing, music, games, history, a promenade and delicious period food in the historic town of Richmond, and a music and history sail on the majestic tall ship, the Lady Nelson. Four days of fun, food, fine music, dancing and general frivolity. This year we also have a bonus night of historically themed contra dancing on the Monday night.

Sadly, as you may well be aware, Glen Derwent is closing. We will miss our wonderful visits to that beautiful property, and we wish Liz and Rob well and thank them for many lovely times there.

As a consequence, we have spent much time deliberating, discussing and visiting potential alternatives, and we're very pleased to announce that this year, on the Sunday, we'll be holding a Richmond Regency Assembly. It'll be a day of Regency activities, fine food and tea in the historic village of Richmond (about half an hour from Hobart). Tickets will include delicious lunch and afternoon tea of period sweet and savoury food and hot and cold drinks, as well as Regency country dancing, live music, visits to the historic Richmond gaol and Old Hobart Town model village, Maypole dancing, period games to play and a promenade along the banks of the picturesque Coal river and across the oldest bridge in Australia, admiring the ducks.

TL:DR FFT looking for help, if you are interested and have a little time, read on:

At the Folk Federation we are considering our AGM this Sunday, 20th October. A number of our committee are happy to stand again for nomination. We do know, however, that we definitely will have two vacancies that need filling. Have a think about whether you have a bit of time and inclination to help the FFT, or whether you know someone who might be interested - if so, please pass on the following info:

*SECRETARY*
Peter, our Secretary until now, has stepped down and leaves us in need of a secretary. The duties are neither onerous nor difficult – a few hours a month should suffice. You don’t need to be an experienced Secretary, just someone who can manage a bit of correspondence, and prepare the agendas and minutes for the four committee meetings each year and the AGM. A previous Secretary will be very happy to advise and provide some easy templates and the meetings are friendly and relaxed so you can certainly ask questions at any time. It’s not necessary to have knowledge of the folk scene; one of the best things about joining the committee is that you get to learn about the exciting things that are happening and the people who are driving them. I, as the Treasurer, had little knowledge of anything outside of the few dance things I went to before joining the committee and I have loved getting to know so many wonderful people through being on the committee, and greatly enjoy being involved in FFT events. Aside from the admin though, there’s no obligation to be involved more than you wish. The committee is probably the friendliest, most welcoming committee you can imagine - it’s worth coming to the meetings just for the tea and cake! If you have any questions do contact me, Sarah Lewis, on [email protected], 0409 218 414 or David Wanless or Cathy Hutchinson on 6273 2127 or [email protected]

*NORTH-WEST REP*
Simon has been doing a great job as North-west rep from Burnie but he will be vacating the position so if you’re in the North-west or even in the West perhaps you’d like to join us as the new Rep? It would be good to have at least a little involvement in some aspect of the local folk scene. Occasionally you may get contacted about folk events in your area, or you may be asked to help publicise something relevant, but you won’t be expected to help out more than you’re able, and the rest of the committee are very helpful. We’re very keen to have the north and north-west of Tas represented in the Folk Federation.

Being a committee member is a great opportunity to contribute your ideas and/or help to the folk community. (Ideas are optional - you can join the committee just to find out what goes on and how you can help!) Duties are light and you need only contribute as much as you can or want. We link locations around the state by phone or video conference so no arduous travelling is involved, and it is important to the FFT to have committee members in various parts of the state – even the Secretary could be outside of Hobart.

You don’t need to be a folk musician or dancer, just have an interest in the Tasmanian folk scene and the ability to attend four meetings each year – with nice people! It’s a great way to find out more about what’s going on in Tasmania’s folk community.

Grand Regency Ball and Dance Workshops

Have you ever wanted to dance as they did in the time of Jane Austen and Beau Brummell, of Emma, Elizabeth, Mr Darcy and yes, even Mr Collins?

You are most cordially invited to attend our Grand Regency Ball on Saturday, 30th November, at St James Church Hall in New Town. All ages and identities are welcome. All dances taught. No partner or dancing experience is required. There are also two optional dance workshops during the day, but you are most welcome to attend the ball whether or not you attend the workshops.

Note that the dancing can be quite vigorous and is a lot of fun. Don't believe everything that you may have seen on a moving picture.

Tickets are available at https://events.humanitix.com/derwentregencyfestival24 or at the door.

Further details follow.

Regency Dance Workshops

Two dance workshops to hone your skills before the Grand Regency Ball in the evening, or just enjoy more dancing.

Regency Dance Workshop 11:15 for 11:30am-1:30pm

Intermediate Regency and Georgian Dances 2:20 for 2:30-4:30pm:

Grand Regency Ball: 7:15 for 7:30pm:
Divine period music including many Tasmanian pieces, by Van Diemen’s Angels (harp, piano, fiddle and flute)

Dancing Master David Wanless will lead you through an evening of fun and lively dances. No partner or dancing experience required, though attending one or both workshops earlier in the day would make it even more fun.

These are part of the Derwent Regency Festival, 29th November-2nd December: Celebrate the Regency era in style and fun with a Regency evening at Narryna Heritage Museum, dance workshops and a Grand Regency Ball in the fine St James Church Hall in New Town, a Garden/History Party of Regency activities and food on the Sunday, and a music and history sail on the majestic tall ship, the Lady Nelson. Four days of fun, food, fine music, dancing and general frivolity.
