Anyone who caught Riches & Wood's performance at last year's Verandah Music Festival will be thrilled to know they're coming back in 2024. Beautiful tunes + exceptional musicians + a gorgeous verandah in Evandale = a breathtaking experience!

Thanks Wendy Miller for this lovely photo.

Australian folk supergroup The Good Behaviours are touring Tasmania in September to launch their new album It’ll Be Alright.

The Good Behaviours are an exquisite chamber-folk ensemble wrapped in old-time-banjo. Nick Henderson (banjo) composes music of cinematic beauty for five of Australia’s most virtuosic instrumentalists: Chris Stone (violin) and Holly Downes (double bass) from The String Contingent, Emily-Rose Sarkova (accordion) from Chaika and Felix Lalanne (guitar).

See a live performance of the track 'Britt's House' below for a pre-release sneak peak

They will be performing in The Watershed in Wynyard on Friday 13th September 7:30pm - 9pm, Dreamfarm in Huon Valley on Saturday 14th September 7pm - 10pm and at the Hobart House Concert Collective on Sunday 15th September 6:30pm - 10pm

For more information about any of the gigs you can email [email protected]

Subject: Greetings from your 2025 NFF Team, News and Applications opening soon!

Dear Folks,

Welcome to your first newsletter from the 2025 Festival team! Artistic Directors Chris, Holly, and Michael, Festival Director Anne, and Volunteers Manager Demelza are thrilled to be back together and hard at work planning your 2025 Festival – and we need your support!

First, some exciting news! Artist applications are opening on Monday 24 June. We encourage all artists and groups who want to be involved in 2025 to apply – please spread the word. We’ve streamlined the application process even more ahead of next year’s Festival and will be hosting online drop-in sessions to answer your application questions:

6 pm Monday 8 July 2024

7 pm (dance specific) Monday 8 July 2024

6 pm Monday 22 July 2024

Keep an eye on our socials and encourage others to sign up for the mailing list to stay updated with all the important info.

You may be aware that the festival scene is facing considerable challenges, which have also affected the National Folk Festival. Audience behavior is changing, and like festivals across the country we have yet to see the return of pre COVID audience numbers. Cost of living pressures mean many people are waiting to the last minute to book tickets. This uncertainty has seen a number of festivals decide to cancel. We have not been immune to the financial impact.

Over the past few years, the Festival has suffered significant financial losses. This is a widespread issue impacting the arts and cultural scene across the country – Almost every arts organisation in Canberra has posted significant deficits in recent years. Because of this, the Board has had to make some difficult decisions in recent weeks to ensure the Festival remains sustainable, which has involved some staffing changes.

We’d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank Heidi Pritchard, our outgoing Managing Director, for her incredible leadership through the challenging times of 2023-24. Her passion and dedication to the Festival and the folk community have been unwavering, and she will be greatly missed.

To ensure a strong future for the National Folk Festival, now more than ever, we need to stand together as one community to support our scene. So, what can you do? Firstly, lock in the Easter long weekend from 17th – 21st April to attend the Festival. Secondly, if you have any feedback about the Festival, please get in touch. The surveys and feedback from the 2024 Festival recorded the highest audience appreciation received in recent years, but we need to keep the conversation going.

We are working with a range of people in the community to make a stronger festival next year, and we invite you to be part of that. If you haven’t already shared your experience through our survey or sent us an email, and have feedback you’d like to share, please do! Your input is invaluable, and we are taking the time to deeply consider all feedback as we begin designing our second Festival. If you have more to say, feel free to book in for a phone chat by emailing us on [email protected]

We’ll be announcing more key dates, information, and updates very soon. More than ever, your Festival needs you, and we sincerely thank you for working with us to ensure the National Folk Festival lives on for another 57 years!

Stay tuned and keep the folk spirit alive!

Warm regards,

The National Folk Festival Team: Demelza, Anne, Holly, Chris, and Michael.

E-ceilidh (with Ceilidh being pronounced 'kaylee') is a more riotous and eclectic variation on English folk, barn or country dancing. Simple folk dances done with high energy to driving live music.

Here's a nice description of balfolk dancing, from Bal Folk Perth in WA:
Originating in France, the balfolk dance phenomenon has swept the European continent and is now taking root in Australia. A modern take on traditional folk styles, balfolk creates meaningful connections through shared joy in music and dance.

Are you having a birthday party soon? Do you have an electronic noticeboard at work? Are you part of a social group or another dance group? We'd love your help in letting people know about our next monthly dance, a lively E-ceilidh + Balfolk dance with high energy trad French and English dance music by La Voie de Wallaby. Here's a poster for it, so feel free to share or distribute it. The more people who come, the more fun we have. Word of mouth is the best form of publicity, so we invite you to invite people.
