Huonville Remembrance Day service was a time of reflection of the sacrifices made by those who have served from the armed forces.
Huonville High School students gave their time to set up and participate in the service. Representatives from the school prepared a heartfelt rendition of the poem ‘Flanders Fields’ -our thanks to Jason Parbs. The main address was presented by Amy Cook, who spoke so eloquently. The upper primary school students from Huonville and grades 7-10 from the High School attended to pay their respects and support their peers.
Our gratitude goes to all members of our community who helped in various ways and who made the time to pause at 11am on 11th day of the 11th month, to remember. Lest we forget.

Notably absent today was our much loved flag operator, Kevin Turvey. You were sorely missed Kev. We hope you know how much we appreciate you and hope you’re feeling well enough to enjoy the sunshine today.

All Peacekeepers in the Hobart Area.

You are wanted to take part in filming the Peacekeeper Statue at Anglsea Barracks on 14 Sep 2024.

The Australian War Memorial is undertaking a once-in-a-lifetime Development Project modernising and expanding its galleries and buildings. A significant feature of this new space will be a large screen cinematic film of memorials representing commemoration from across the country, from metropolitan, regional and remote locations.

If you would like to take part in the filming of the Anglesea Barracks Peacekeeper Statue, please email Ian at [email protected] or 0414 245 254

Please join us in welcoming the crew of HMAS Huon as they perform a traditional Freedom of Entry march through Huonville's Main Street on Saturday 4 May 2024.

The crew and Navy band will march from the cenotaph at Heron Street at 10.30am and continue along Main Street. They'll stop at the War Memorial building to meet our local Tasmania Police representative who will grant the procession "Freedom of Entry" into the town. The march will conclude at the Huonville Town Hall.

Please feel free to stay after the parade and meet the crew in the Town Hall.

If you would like to attend the civic reception later in the day, please phone 6264 0300 or email [email protected]. Numbers are limited, so please RSVP by Monday 29 April 2024.

Unfortunately, the HMAS Huon ship will not be visiting Tasmania for this event.

ℹ️ Further information about the Freedom of Entry event can be found on our website: https://www.huonvalley.tas.gov.au/welcoming-the-crew-of-hmas-huon/

LOST ANZAC KIWI TRADITION

The associations of rosemary with ANZAC day have an added dimension, in the fact that rosemary grows wild across the Gallipoli peninsula.

It is uncertain when the practice of wearing rosemary on ANZAC Day first began, but it has become a regular feature of remembrance early after 1916.

But for a late arrival of poppies for Remembrance Day in early 1922, it would have been the symbol for ANZAC.

Some RSAs in NZ still place Rosemary on the service graves yet now the poppy has become the main symbol.

Our Piper, Peter, is keeping the ANZAC spirit alive. While awaiting surgery on his knee, and unable to walk comfortably, he’s battling through to attend the Huonville service on Thursday, determined to play for the ANZACS and all the fallen.

The music at the commemorative services holds such an important space for our veterans and their families. The haunting sounds of the French horn for the last post at our HuonVille service has become a profoundly moving aspect of the service.
Thank you Sophia and Nathan.…. And to all our other performers who make the service so special. We are grateful for you all.
The 2024 service will be accompanied by the Huon Valley Concert Band. Thank you to Jane and the team.
