When in China greetings are made by asking "chi le ma?" which translates to 'have you eaten'? It's the equivalent to asking "how are you" in Australia.
The first time I encountered this, it made so much sense to me. It's a question we can act on. No matter who the encounter is between it shows a common cause and concern. If the answer is no, then food shall be sought, making the interaction more personable, if the answer is yes, then further curiosity can ensue such as 'what did you eat' and 'how was it' and the conversation can move on. I just love it!
