RACING CANCELLED SUNDAY JAN 5.

Hi everyone (LSC/BYC) we have decided to cancel the scheduled trophy race this Sunday 5th Jan. Due to low numbers expected, we would require more volunteers than boats on the water.

A reminder that we have a short course series on the 12th scheduled to go ahead as planned, hope to see a lot of you there.

Happy New Year everyone!

Lots to look forward to at LSC@BYC this Sunday. After a couple of weeks off, it’s back to business for our final club activities before the Xmas break.

The day gets underway with Learn to Sail and Green Fleet groups on the water early. The weather forecast is friendly, so the youngsters should have a great morning.

Prior to dinghy racing in the afternoon, we have a free sausage sizzle on at 12 for all members including the Sabot and Learn to Sail families.

It would be great if senior sailors can support the get-together to foster a good family club atmosphere amongst all the members.

Afternoon racing takes place after lunch. Final pennant races for the pre Xmas series will be run for Sabres. Top placings are well and truly up for grabs in both the elapsed and corrected time divisions. Expect close competition in both races in the forecast SE breeze.

At the same time, north of the bridge, our keelboat division will contest the Nibbs Electrical Summer Series race 3.

Get along to LSC on Sunday. Share a BBQ, meet our latest members and their families, enjoy some afternoon competition and socialise post race. The perfect opportunity to relax before the Xmas frenzy starts in earnest.

Congratulations to NW Coast skipper Matt Price on winning the Sabre State Championship, following 2 races today in highly challenging conditions.
Unfortunately, several boats were damaged overnight as wild winds overturned them.

A long, slow day for our Sabre skippers in the Showdown/ State Championships. Only one race completed. Tomorrows forecast for Westerlies gusting above 25 knots should provide much more action!
After one race, Dan Woods leads!

LEARN TO SAIL AND GREEN FLEET CANCELLED TOMORROW!

Due to adverse forecast for Sunday, Learn to Sail and Sabot group training have been cancelled.

29/11/2024

A reminder that LSC will operate on a limited schedule this weekend, and not at all the following week.

Sunday sees morning activity only in Green Fleet and Learn To Sail. As usual, these activities are weather dependent. The forecast isn’t good. Matt will inform participants by 8am on Sunday if it is cancelled or not.

The Sabre fleet will be otherwise engaged at Midway Point.

Next week, there will be no LSC activity at all, with juniors having the week off and Sabres heading to the Showdown regatta for their State Championship.

SMALL BOATS WORK THEIR MAGIC FOR LSC FAMILY.

This is the most wonderful story of brothers Keith and George Jansen, club stalwart Anthony Morgan and the boys’ dedication to their newfound love…. Sailing and ply boats.

The boys participated in the LSC learn to sail program last season, sailing Sabots owned by the club. Learners and their families were encouraged to purchase the boats from the club so they could continue their journey once learn to sail ended.

Over the winter, Keith, George, their families and Anthony have worked on two rather tired Sabots purchased from the club. Keith’s boat is Wave Rider, George's boat is Salty Too. George's boat is finished and Keith's is a fortnight away.

Anthony provided the following details about the boys’ journey…,

* Both boats had been exceptionally well built originally. Salty Too was built by Royce Salter's father in Glenorchy and it is believed Wave Rider was built by the famous Cec Lee from Queensland.

* Salty Too has been State Champion once and Wave Rider has won twice (with different skippers).

* Unfortunately both boats were very tired after a period of time as club trainers.

* Both boys and their Dad Scott have been coming to my workshop twice weekly since July to learn how to upgrade their boats.

* The family are descendants of the famous Holyman maritime shipping and aviation family.

* George is 12 years old and won the LSC Sabot trophy last season.

* Salty Too had a badly damaged foredeck and under guidance George replaced that himself in Mahogany ply left over from the Dynamite Jack rebuild. (Dynamite Jack is Anthony’s Heron, built in the 1980s and refurbished last year.)
He was also able to add new King Billy trim to the gunwhales machined from the old seats of the same boat. He also stripped the interior, painting a lot of the cockpit to highlight the beautiful original cedar buoyancy tanks. Externally, the hull was stripped and George chose a striking maroon red to highlight the beautiful dark timbers. He has shown extraordinary commitment for someone so young to bring his dream alive.

* Keith's boat had significant structural issues with a major repair needed of a large crack in the side that preceded his ownership. The thwart had also broken free and this had led to twisting and cracking of the centrecase area.

* After Keith, his Father and Grandfather stripped the hull externally, a total of 13 repaired holes were found, leading to the suggestion that the boat be renamed 'Dodgem Car!'

* Matt Westland has often commented on the value to young skippers of owning their own boats and learning how they 'work.' These boys couldn't be prouder of themselves or their boats. Quite rightly.

* Father Scott has also commented on how the skills they have learned can carry across into other areas of their lives.

George, Keith, their family and Anthony are justifiably proud of their amazing work!

* Both boats are to be displayed in the Wooden Boat Festival in Feb 2025

Pictures show George with the fruits of his hard work on Salty Too.

We will feature Keith and Wave Rider when the boat is ready.

All at LSC are incredibly proud to have the Jansens as part of the LSC family. We wish them a lifetime of sailing joy.

Pennant races 7&8 were run at LSC today in overcast conditions with a variable E-SE breeze which never built much beyond 13 knots.

Racing was close amongst the 13 boat fleet in both races.

In race 7, Commodore Richard Bingham scored an excellent outright win, followed by the always consistent Matt Westland, Dan Followes, Jason Followes and Dan Woods. Chasing Richard on corrected time were Dan Woods, Shayne Lindsay, Tim Mitchell and Dan Followes.

Race 8 followed a similar pattern, with the breeze remaining steady at around 10-12 knots, but shifting in direction regularly. This time it was John Cerruty who recorded an outright win, followed by Chris Boon, Matt Westland, Dan Followes and Shayne Lindsay.
Following John on corrected time were Shayne Lindsay, Rod Andrewartha, Mark Rasmussen and Andrew Bradshaw.

Overall standings, with 2 races to sail and 2 drops now in play see Westland on 9 points, followed by Boon (17), Cerruty (18), D Followes (23) and Bingham (25).

Corrected time standings see Matt Pearce (25), Cerruty (29), Bradshaw (29), Boon (29.5) and Rasmussen (32) as the main contenders.

Over the course of the Pennant series, 15 Sabres have participated.

Racing takes a 2 week break, as skippers participate in the Midway Point Regatta next week and the State Titles the week after.

As usual, thanks must go to our race committee, rescue boat crews, shore patrol and BBQ team. We are VERY grateful!
