Winter races at BYC 27.7.25
Who would have picked it as a great day for a sail. Forecast was for 5 kt or less with a chance of a shower in the morning. Hardly enticing, but the weather gods smiled on us with a 10 knot NW and sunshine. Two extras joined in- Jo-Anne with her new boat and Chris in the Turtle which made for a fleet of 7.
The left over low pressure from yesterdays full on rain, gave us a flicky wind with decent size changes of speed and direction. Although the current was running out the tide was pushing in ,so there wasn’t the big disadvantage of heading out into middle of river for better pressure. John Ceruty picked this well and was quick off the start going low and fast. Dan was right with him and had great speed until he tacked back towards the lee of the bluff. A combination of less pressure as well as picking up a ball of w**d threw him to the back of the fleet. As with any new boat, Jo had some teething trouble with a few strings failing and had to be towed in. Richard commented after the race that the compass was showing big direction swings and getting these right turned out to be the key to success. Matt managed to pick things right and rounded top mark in front and held on to the finish with a consistent Richard in second spot.
In race 2 John got too far towards the pin and couldn’t make the line due to the current. Having to tack and duck the fleet is never fun. Chris showed it was possible to sail under the bluff and still do really well. He was second at the top mark and held on to second place at the finish.
Dan was the outstanding sailor in race 2 . Once he had his nose in front no-one could catch him and he progressively sailed away from the fleet on every leg. Shane was not up to his normal pace and finished mid fleet. He commented that he was looking forward to the forecast light breeze…..which didn’t appear. A good vibe back at the club afterwards with hot food and plenty of laughs.
The new long length pontoon is working well for both launch and retrieval of our boats. It’s possible to launch without getting feet wet!
Last Sabre race for the Winter at BYC is 31st August. All welcome.

WINTER RACING

Sabres- Winter racing at BYC 15.6.25

Five Sabres braced the cold but sunny and steady ,10 to 12 knot katabatic wind last Sunday.
The RO Grant, set good courses with nice reaches and good length upwind.
In race 1, Richard showed best boat speed upwind and strategically went out into stronger breeze coming down centre of river. No real windshifts meant it was a boatspeed sort of day. Shane was going well in second spot till he misjudged the layline to top mark and had to tack and duck other Stbd tackers. Richard went on to win with Matt taking 20 seconds out of him on down-winds but losing it again on the up-winds.
In Race two, Matt got best start to leeward of the fleet down near the pin. Dan stuck to him all race and managed to get in front up the last work. On the run to the finish Matt closed the gap and it was neck and neck down most of the run with Matt just edging Dan out right at the boat.
We had good close racing and with outdoor heaters going and BBQ at the clubhouse, the bodies were warmed back up. The keelers were impressed with our sailing but also assured us we were crazy.
I had had made a strut affair out from the transom on which Go Pro type camera was bolted which gave a great record of my day. It’s really valuable to be able to look at your technique which we don’t normally get to see. “DO I really wiggle the tiller that much upwind?” and “Whats that’s funny double step for, when I tack?” The footage gives great feedback for improving technique.
John had some fancy thermal gloves which were warm but offered no grip so he had to ditch them in first race and struggled bare handed. Shane suffered even more as he’d left his wetsuit boots at home!
John commented that even on a run with little waves it pays to use them. Just steering straight at mark is slower.
Next racing in a month. All Sabre sailors welcome to join us.
Matt.

LSC news

Our sailing has gone quiet, but things are still happening. A few have taken their boats home to the shed for a refurbish over the winter.
Amatuer Foam sandwich Sabre- Chris Boon is getting on with his foam build Sabre. Chris has built a sturdy jig (Sabre Association paying for materials) and once Chris’ boat is off the jig it will become available for others to build a foam/glass boat. This process allows people to achieve a very durable and fast hull for a fraction of the cost of purchasing a manufactured boat. (see attached pic)
New Sailor- Our latest sailor to join the Sabre class is Alan.(see attached pic) His first sail in a Sabre was on the club boat Collage. He’s made the jump to having his own dinghy and purchased “As If”. He’s been doing some Sunday morning sailing with Matt providing instruction. Welcome him to our group when you see him around the club.

Winter sailing- BYC has offered to provide some racing opportunities for us on Sunday mornings- roughly once a month. We need 4 or 5 boats to make it a goer. So far we have 3 interested- Dan, Shane and Matt. We need a couple more so if you don’t mind a crisp sail let Matt know on 0400563630. Our only rule is we aren’t going out if it’s over 20 and raining!
Improving launch and retrieve facility at BYC. John and Richard have been putting plenty of effort into planning how we can improve things for next season. Will keep you posted once we get closer to happenings.
New Boats- Andrew (Nanna) has purchased a slick looking newbie from the mainland. A purple machine named “Damn The Torpedo’s”. His kids are busy choosing a new name. The “Sauce” will be up for sale so if you are after a decent foam boat get in touch with Andrew.
Cheers
Matt.
