We’ve been busy potting up today for our next Spring Sale with lots of help from our fabulous garden and gossip volunteers!

If you are new to following us…. each year we open our season with a big on-farm spring sale for the garden and flower lovers. We’ll have our large range of Dahlia tubers and Dahlia cuttings….along with (lots!) of potted Peonies, Ranunculus, Anemones and Iceland Poppies and a big range of unique perennial cut flower plants. Seeds, fresh flowers, coffee, baked goods and the golden ticket returns!

Save the date!: 19th October 2025

Two new things this year…. We’re also offering a special range of cut flower annuals in large punnets to easily create your dream summer cut flower garden at home. Lots of beautiful and hard to source varieties that we grow on the farm and recommend for cutting. Lots of beautiful mixes and colours to choose from.

The other exciting news is we will be travelling up to Longford Blooms with some of our nursery stock to have stall there in mid November….so we can also offer our range to the garden lovers in the north of TAS! Super excited to be soaking up the amazing festive atmosphere at LB as a stallholder! If you haven’t been….it’s a definite visit destination if you love gardening!

Dahlia seeds! If you fancy yourself a fun growing project this coming spring… you should try starting some Dahlias from seed! It’s quite literally my favourite all time thing to do! Every plant you grow will be a brand new, never before seen bloom as dahlia seed is not true to type -meaning it doesn’t produce the same plant as the parent plant. But when these unique new babies start flowering…. oh boy….the anticipation of finding a new gorgeous flower! So much excitement and Christmas morning feels!

Our dahlia seed is open pollinated and carefully collected from our favourite cut flower varieties we grow across the farm.

Dahlia seed is easy to grow too…. we start ours with the wet paper towel method (see next slide) and then pop the sprouted seed straight into a pot or seedling tray with potting mix. So easy and they grow fast! The remaining slides are all seedlings we produced this year. The smokey pink Anemone form is one of my top 5!

I’ve popped a link 🔗 taking you straight to our dahlia seeds in our bio links. We have lots of other new seeds about to be listed too which I’m very excited about! Kim has been doing a fantastic job collecting new seeds for us in the field all season. Will be sending out details in our next newsletter this coming weekend once everything is loaded up in our shop …so make sure you are on our mailing list if you want to be the first to know!

It’s time to start assessing our Dahlia seedlings for this season.

Interestingly we’ve had a lot of Anemone forms popping up in our breeding patch this year …..with quite a few that I am excited to see how they grow in their second year. Seedling Pic 1 is my fav!

I’m always looking for a strongly consistent bloom with good form…but also for something that is a little bit different! So these Anemones make me a bit excited ….as there doesn’t seem to be too many of them around commercially.

To assess consistency I always take photos of our seedlings throughout the full season - start, middle and end - to see how different the bloom is and if it changes. The best ones hold their form really well across the season and the weaker ones will start to deteriorate as the season winds down.

Hope you enjoyed my chat on dahlia breeding with for tonight! How fun is Dahlia breeding from seed…. and everyone can give it a go!
