✨ More garden rambles with Marian… continuing to look at how our garden can provide for nature…. The Banksia Tree grows really well in this area due to the sandy soil and provides seed source for the yellow-tailed black cockatoo, a large beautiful native bird that is long lived and specific about their food source, they love the Banksia tree seeds but will also enjoy pine nuts from a pine tree 🤩

Last month we talked about the 5 F’s of gardening with Marian…. Here’s a great example of ‘form’ and how different shapes and sizes really complement eachother and a garden 🌲🌳

Meet Marian, our head gardener at Tipsy Hill:

“Horticulture and working with plants, soil and the natural environment enables me to balance my interactions with the real world and the virtual world.  To that end I completed the Advanced Diploma in Horticulture from TAFE SA, and then set up (in conjunction with a fellow graduate) an all-female Landscape Design and Construction business, called “LandEscapes”
One day while working on the development of the spatial data set of the tree collection at the Waite Arboretum, a phone call came in from a certain Bec Hardy, asking where to find a gardener who may be capable of managing a large complex garden located in the Blewitt Springs area.  My colleague at the time took the call and then knowing my previous horticultural background asked me if I would at all be interested…
I met with Bec on site, and after a walk through the garden, I was immediately taken by the beautiful garden, was quite intimidated by its size, but in my typical “I’ll give that a go” attitude and my instant comfortable rapport with Bec, I said yes.
Tipsy Hill won my heart that day and over the years now that I have worked there, I have only grown to love it more.  The garden is large, complex and very intense.  Originally over-planted to deliver an ‘instant’ mature garden feel, it is now part of the long-term plan to strategically remove overcrowded and overgrown woody shrubs and plants, transplant those that have similar climatic requirements together, and to build a more sustainable plant base by using local Australian Indigenous Plants wherever possible”

More garden rambles with Marian… 🤩

Today looking at this magnificent tree and how it’s shredding its bark…. The actual terminology is ‘decorticating’ and as trees grow, they expand from the inside and on many tree species, the bark on the outside is ‘shed’ - this is common on Eucalypts (Gum Trees) and you can often see large strands of bark hanging off the main trunk and sometimes branches (on Mallee species particularly).

This particular tree is an Irish Strawberry Tree - Arbutus unedo - and the shedding of its bark is part of its natural growth process, with the cream new bark eventually becoming the rust brown colour of the overall bark.

Today’s catch up with Marian was looking at ‘variation in form’ so the difference in types of plants and flowers, structure, shapes and heights…... So the overall look and contrast once they’re growing alongside eachother, as well as with the backdrop and surroundings 🌲🌵🌳
