Castle Saunderson - (Caisleán Shandarsan)

The Saunderson family acquired the original castle during the Plantation of Ulster. The original castle was inhabited by the O'Reillys of Breffni and was formerly known as Breffni Castle from the 14th century. Robert Sanderson, who fought on the side of William of Orange, inherited the castle from his father in 1676. James II's troops burned the castle in 1689. Months later, 400 of King James's soldiers were ambushed here while on retreat from the battle at Newtownbutler.

Castle Saunderson (Caisleán Shandarsan) is a castle near Belturbet in County Cavan, Ireland. It was the former family seat of the Saunderson family, and is now in ruins. The Finn River flows along the north-eastern edge of the Castle Saunderson Demesne, where the river enters a narrow channel of Upper Lough Erne. The castle is about a half a mile west from Wattlebridge, a small hamlet in the south-south-east of County Fermanagh.

Lough Oughter is a lake, or complex of lakes, in County Cavan covering more than 8,900 hectares (22,000 acres). The complex of lakes lies on the River Erne, and forms the southern part of the Lough Erne complex. The lakes are bounded roughly by Belturbet in the north, Cavan town to the east, Crossdoney to the south and Killeshandra to the west.

Sherbrooke forest lies 220 - 500m within the Dandenong Ranges 40km east of Melbourne, close to the suburb of Belgrave.

The vegetation is classified as wet sclerophyll forest with the dominant tree species the mountain ash Eucalyptus Regnans, the tallest flowering plant in the world.

Sherbrooke forest is famous for it’s population of superb lyrebirds and was an early and still important site for the study and conservation of this species.

The communities of both the Dandenong’s and the upper Yarra Valley live with knowledge that they live in one of the worst areas of the world for wildfire, second to California in the united states of America. Bad fires in California usually serve as a warning of the risk of a bad fire season in the yarra ranges region of Victoria.

One comforting factor in living in the upper yarra valley is the fact that the major water catchments for the supply of water in melbourne are located in the area. In the event of any large fire in the area the government will commit unlimited resources to fight the fire as any serious fire in the catchment would have enormous ramifications for melbourne.

Built in the 1920’s and like most of Melbourne’s water harvesting Reservoirs, the entire catchment is eucalypt forest completely closed to human activity, as is the reservoir itself.

Immediately below the concrete dam, the Maroondah Reservoir Park features a large garden landscape in an english style, featuring many exotic plants very different from the surrounding native vegetation.

A walking track leads across the dam, and up to a lookout from which much of the reservoir can be viewed.
