Happy 2023 flower lovers 🌼 It’s been a minute.
Last year I took some time off after having my first child. This year I’m looking forward to kicking it up a gear in flower advocacy.
During my time away, I've been able to reflect on the challenges and opportunities that exist within the flower industry. In my mind, this should be a positive community that helps to elevate your voices to have a say on industry matters.
I am eager to continue pushing the envelope in our industry, to develop new partnerships and and to expand our reach and influence.
We will be focused on quality, safety, education and sustainability. The current education packages for floristry students are overdue for reform and there is an obvious appetite and need to promote and embed sustainable practices for growers and florists alike.
As the peak body, we will continue to:
- Promote and support Australian grown flowers
- Improve the understanding of relevant industry policy, regulations and legislation
- Foster strong and friendly relationships with state associations, organisations and floral educators
- Bridge the gap between growers, retailers and industry partners
- Advocate for strict biosecurity measures
- Advocate for Country of Origin Labelling
- Provide industry news and information
Last year had some big wins like the investigation into order gatherers by the ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) and their public appeal to consumers to buy flowers from local florists but also frustrating moments such as flowers not being added to Country of Origin Labelling. This was particularly disappointing as we were told it was going to happen. We will continue advocating for COOL and hope the new federal government will reconsider this decision.
Finally, in the lead up to Valentine’s Day, I know everyone is working around the clock - watch this space for articles coming out encouraging people to buy locally grown flowers from local florists and happy trading!
