Happy 2023 flower lovers 🌼 It’s been a minute.

Last year I took some time off after having my first child. This year I’m looking forward to kicking it up a gear in flower advocacy.

During my time away, I've been able to reflect on the challenges and opportunities that exist within the flower industry. In my mind, this should be a positive community that helps to elevate your voices to have a say on industry matters.

I am eager to continue pushing the envelope in our industry, to develop new partnerships and and to expand our reach and influence.

We will be focused on quality, safety, education and sustainability. The current education packages for floristry students are overdue for reform and there is an obvious appetite and need to promote and embed sustainable practices for growers and florists alike.

As the peak body, we will continue to:
- Promote and support Australian grown flowers
- Improve the understanding of relevant industry policy, regulations and legislation
- Foster strong and friendly relationships with state associations, organisations and floral educators
- Bridge the gap between growers, retailers and industry partners
- Advocate for strict biosecurity measures
- Advocate for Country of Origin Labelling
- Provide industry news and information

Last year had some big wins like the investigation into order gatherers by the ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) and their public appeal to consumers to buy flowers from local florists but also frustrating moments such as flowers not being added to Country of Origin Labelling. This was particularly disappointing as we were told it was going to happen. We will continue advocating for COOL and hope the new federal government will reconsider this decision.

Finally, in the lead up to Valentine’s Day, I know everyone is working around the clock - watch this space for articles coming out encouraging people to buy locally grown flowers from local florists and happy trading!

Another change of season has crept up so quickly... excited to see more varieties? 💐

• As the weather starts to get cold we get to see a change in the variety of flowers we get to work with.

In the coming months we can look forward to seeing more poppies, anemones, ranunculus, blushing bride, hellebores, and hyacinth.

Unfortunately some of our native flowers are being grown overseas and then imported for sale here in Australia.

I don’t agree with it. I believe it’s a way to make money off cheap labour and some unethical practices.

Imported flowers that come to Australia are dipped in round up if they can be propagated and fumigated with methyl bromide causing skin and eye irritation and even potentially cancer.

I don’t believe this is safe for florists, workers or consumers and want the practice to change. I also don’t believe we need to import natives!! We have the perfect for conditions to grow right here at home.

Tune in tomorrow for another unreal episode 💐💫

• Season 3 Episode 5 out tomorrow! A wonderful chat with the talented Phoebe of

Alchemilla is a flower farm & floristry studio in Birregurra, south west Victoria. Phoebe uses biodynamic & permaculture techniques to plant, harvest and nurture the flower farm throughout the seasons & to create a system that is layered, thriving and abundant from the soil to the sky. Biodynamics & the lunar calendar are the backbone of the farm & provide its yearly structure, which Phoebe has created a 2021 lunar planting almanac about. Flowers from the farm are harvested for the Alchemilla studio for both bespoke events and wholesale.

We speak about her fantastic Almanac and her interest in biodynamics, lunar cycles and flowers! Thank you Phoebe 🙏
