THIS IS MY STORY.
IMPORTANT MESSAGE.

Hi, my name is Virginia, better known as Ascha.

At the end of January I got Covid real bad, it took months to recover, always feeling tired, achy body, generally not well.
I took my daughter to our doctor as she needed a prescription & while I was there I told the doctor how I was feeling & she suggested I do a heap of blood tests. As she was adding notes to my file she said “it’s been a while since you had a Pap smear”. I cringed and said ok let’s do one now, as I knew I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t do it then.

I booked a phone call appointment a week later to get my results. My phone rings at 8pm a week later, really anxious & wanting to know what my blood test results were. My DR asked me if I had finished having children. “You have a type cervical cancer and you will need surgery and some kind of treatment.” I was in shock! All I could think about was a family friend who died of cervical cancer in her early thirties. I was thinking of the worst- what about my girls? My babies. My daughters-Jaimee (19), Kyrrah (16).

Three weeks later I went into surgery and had a hysterectomy to remove my cervix, uterus, and Fallopian tubes. My surgeon left my ovaries in as they looked good. Recovery was intense, very long, emotional, painful and as I type this, I am still recovering. It’s almost been 14 weeks.

My results from the surgery took 12 weeks to complete. It was emotionally hard on top of everything. I saw my surgeon and then I was referred to a gynaecological oncologist. My gut feeling was off and I knew this wasn’t over. The cancer they found was a little worse than expected so I had to go get an MRI.

On the 18th of July I am heading back into surgery to remove both my ovaries… and will be put on Hormone replacement therapy patches(HRT). I am lucky I don’t need chemotherapy or radiotherapy at this stage.
I will be having regular checks for a long time.

I am 45 years old.

My last Pap smear was 6 years ago. All my other Pap smears all came back clear.
