Lots of trash taking wedding industry awards lately, with people thinking it's OK putting them all in the same boat. Imagine if someone put your business in with all the others who do what you do and claimed they were all bad. Not really fair IMHO.
A few people reached out to me to share an opinion on these as I chose not to weigh in on any of the posts I saw. The 2 award programs I know about. The "Australian Wedding Awards" which were previously called "Brides Choice" is maybe the dodgiest thing going around the wedding industry and I say that as someone who has been awarded as a winner of these multiple times. This is the one that the other posts were about, however it was interesting to see some people taking the opportunity to combine all awards in the same category. I've never paid a cent to this company and while I think they are dodgy, there are some fantastic companies who have won awards with them in the past and by no means do I say those awards are not well deserved. My criticism is of the operator and their dishonesty (I've seen many examples of this so I speak from experience and not just making things up).
The other awards entity is ABIA Weddings Australia who I believe is the most respected, ethical and transparent option. The first award I won with them was before I had ever paid them anything. I have since elected to pay for a membership with them as I believe they are operating in the best interests of our industry. Yes, they are a business and run for profit and in exchange for that profit they provide a marketing directory/platform with helpful information for couples planning a wedding. Anyone expecting a not-for-profit option to create, run and host this needs to realise how small the wedding industry and that funding for any awards anyone has to come from somewhere.
There area lots of myths around ABIA especially, so it's great that they have all the information on their website answering those myths.
I should be clear that I'm completely on board with those who choose not to be involved with the awards, but I can't really understand those who seem to bag them out (some people do this almost annually), especially when it's obvious they just want to get a few likes at the expense of another small business.
