Why is it important to choose the right tailor/seamstress for your wedding dress?
Here's the tea on what happened to one of our lovely brides and what to look for when choosing a tailor.

While altering her sisters wedding dress our bride asked if it was ok for me to look at a photo of her gown. It was altered by the in-house seamstress where she purchased her gown.
She explained to me something felt off about the fit and wanted a second option.
It was hard to get a good idea from the photos but something was definitely not right with the fit, so I asked her to bring the gown in for me to see what had happened.

She had asked the in-house seamstress to have the straps shortened and the neckline lowered. This should have been done from the top of the bodice.
However the in-house seamstress had tried to take a short cut and cut the bodice in half.
This caused the bodice to distort and ruined a large section of the lace.
The skirt was now in the wrong position creating problems with fit when previously the skirt fit was really good. They tried to correct the skirt by taking in more but this only made it worse.

After our consultation I explained what was wrong, she was heart broken.
My advice was to make a new bodice because the original one was so badly damaged it couldn't be repaired to look like it's original form. The skirt was going to be difficult to correct but I would make it alot better than it was.
My bride went away to think about what to do.
When she returned she asked, if we were making a new bodice could the style be changed?
So we worked together to design a new bodice that she would feel amazing in.
It was long process of unpicking delicate lace to salvage what wasn't damaged and re cutting the bodice and skirt.
The results of this are just beautiful, our bride was so happy.
See photos of the 3 stages below the original gown before alterations, after in-house alterations and the new redesigned bodice we created.

I wish this was the only story like this but I have had to correct many gowns over the years.
In-house alterations can be great but sometimes they are not.

There is no standard level of workmanship in dressmaking like in other trades. We are not all the same. Dressmaking and Tailoring has a huge range of skills and different techniques for simlar results.

Bridal Tailoring needs a strong background in both making gowns from scratch and alterations. You also need skills in bra and corset construction.
Working with fine fabrics and lace requires patience and attention to detail.
There are lots of skilled Tailors out there but you have to research your Tailor. Don't just rely on the shop you purchased from to guide you.
Check reviews on Facebook and Google, look for photos of before and after. Check their social media for photos of simlar gowns to yours to see how they fit past brides.
Ask questions about the process.
I personally like explaining how I will alter a gown and why do it that way. I also like talking about how the gown is made and why something is or isn't possible with how something is cut.

My background is costume design, tailoring, alterations on women's clothing, evening wear, bridal and couture.
About 13 years ago I decided to only do bridal and specialised in made to mesure, re design and alterations.
I really love what I do and I'm very passionate about my work.
Im so very lucky to have worked with so many amazing brides over the years. If you haven't checked out my instagram go have a look at all the amazing gowns.
